'Breaking Bad' And The Community Power Of Television

May 7th, 2014 3:15pm EDT
Breaking Bad
Editorial: This past weekend, I finally started watching Breaking Bad.

It was an oversight on my part, of course. The series deserves every piece of critical acclaim that was thrown at it while I wasn't tuned in. And my misstep was made doubly embarrassing by the fact that one of my good friends was actually a member of Breaking Bad's principal cast. Really, I had no excuse. But I finally got around to screening season one last week, and over the days it took me to finish seven episodes, I learned three things:

1. Aaron Paul is the best pure actor I've ever seen. As in, jaw hanging open w...

Tanner Beard Brings 'Hellion' To The Film Festival Circuit
One of the more exciting films currently making the festival rounds is Hellion, starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul. To get the dish on the movie, BFTV recently had the opportunity to speak with executive producer Tanner Beard, who also has a supporting role on-screen alongside Paul and Juliette Lewis (The Firm). Here's what Tanner told us about Hellion.

"Sandra, you are the most amazing collaborator," Cuaron said, "I want to thank you for not quitting when you thought that I had told you, 'Sandra, I am going to give you herpes,' when I rea...

The cast of Breaking Bad
As Breaking Bad ends its run, the stars of the series met the Television Critics Association one last time. Of course, they would not reveal what happens in the series finale, but the cast did reflect on aspects of their characters they’d explored as well as things that didn’t quite make it onto the small screen.

“I actually have some thoughts about Saul but I’ve never run them by [series creator] Vince [Gilligan],” Bob Odenkirk said. “I’ll tell you one thing, I think he’s from Chicago. I’m from outside of Chicago. A lot of Chicagoans love to go to the southwest, get out of the weather....

"We (Paul and wife Lauren) moved in about a year ago but we're already on the Stars Tours," he said. "They have to drive up this windy road to get to my house, they stop in front, they take pictures, so if I'm home and I see them I will kind of bust open the doors and say, 'Yo b*tch...!'

Roush Review: 'Big Love' Finale

March 21st, 2011 2:53pm EDT
Big Love | Photo Credits: Isabella Vosmikova/HBO
If HBO were to do a sequel to Big Love, it would have to be called something like The Three Sister-Wives. Not exactly Chekhov, but I'd probably watch. Barb, Margene and Nicki carrying on without Bill: That's already a home plus.

I had drifted a while ago from the flock of followers of this weird and lately quite preachy series about polygamy and family and faith, but did a marathon catch-up over the last week in time to watch the final chapter, which aimed for transcendence and at times achieved it. The hour-plus finale thankfully shucked much of the grotesque Utah-Mormon-Gothic melodrama ...

Mega-Emmy Diary 2010

2010 Emmys
It's Emmy time again, kids. And you know what that means: Mega Emmy Diary time.

Now this is something of special ceremony in my estimation as it is so chock full of new nominees (four alone in each comedic supporting category!) that we're likely to see some surprises and some truly touched performers break through.

So, without further ado, let's see what Jimmy Fallon can do...

5:00 – We start with a backstage shot – one of my favorite things about the Emmys has always been when the person directing the show wins and we get a look at the show being put together as it happens. So, needless...

2010 Emmys: Who Should Win & Who Will Win

August 28th, 2010 1:00pm EDT
2010 Emmys
It’s a transitional year for the Emmys, meaning this is one of the more exciting races in recent memories. The flood of new nominees (brought on by a stellar development slate) means that we can no longer rely on the predictable Emmy voting to determine winners. Instead, this is a year where we can see many newcomers emerging and starting a whole new slate of predictable nominees.

Yes, that was a little cynical, but it’s the sad truth of the Emmys – habits are hard to break for the voters. Luckily, this year the virgin nominees have afforded them an extensive choice for brand new habits.

Emmy Nomination Surprises, Snubs And Shouldn't Be Nominated

July 16th, 2009 3:17pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
To paraphrase Ned Flanders, apparently an Emmy nomination is easier to get than an acceptance letter from Arizona State.

This morning, Emmy tried to one-up Oscar's new rule of ten by including six nominees in the acting categories and a whopping seven in the series categories. Yes, if you made a television series this year, or appeared on one, chances are you heard your name called in North Hollywood this morning.

With so many nominess, it seems impossible that any deserving performances or series were left out. Right? Sadly, no. And, of course, there are plenty of nominees who sh...

Emmy Voters, Please Recognize These Shows & Stars!

July 13th, 2009 11:49am EDT
Big Love
The 2009 Emmy nominees will be announced Thursday morning and despite recent changes to the voting system, Emmy voters just can't seem to stray away from the same old outcome. Sure, 30 Rock gets showered with love, but how many more times does Mariska Hargitay need to make the cut?

Here are some names we'd like to see on the roster this year (in alphabetical order):

Big Love (HBO) - Ok Emmy voters, it's been three seasons. It's time to get over your aversion to the icky polygamy premise and embrace the TV bliss that is "Big Love." After a two year break (damn writers' strike!) the sh...

TV Honorees That Should Get Their First Shot At Emmy Nominations

June 10th, 2009 12:02pm EDT
Aaron Paul
Yesterday, we went over the Emmy nominees who have overstayed their welcome. Those perennial TV honorees that simply don't deserve the recognition they once did or, in some cases, never did at all.

So if they're out, who's in? Surely, there can't be too many nominees waiting in the wings. After all, television professionals choose these awards; they can't possibly leave out any substantial number of qualified candidates in favor of perennial duds.

Unfortunately, that's the way it is. Voters simply don't like to change their ways with regards to voting. It almost seems that a ...

It's Not Too Late To Check Out AMC's 'Breaking Bad'

March 28th, 2008 4:07pm EDT
Breaking Bad
The most shocking show on television isn't found on HBO, Showtime, or even FX. No, instead it can be viewed on a channel known mostly for airing colorized westerns and archaic musicals.

AMC entered the TV fray with last year's brilliant "Mad Men." That classy show fit the old-school mold of the channel with its early-60s setting and nostalgic overtones. It was hard to imagine a show filled with raw fury would be the network's follow-up, but that's precisely what "Breaking Bad" is.

"Bad" ended its initial run a few weeks ago, but luckily for viewers who missed out, AMC will be r...
