TV Report Card: Grading 10 Season Finales

May 25th, 2012 12:07pm EDT
Revenge Cast
Season finales are essentially the Hollywood version of final exams. They have to shock and awe and entice viewers into returning after four arduous months of dead air. From births and deaths to break-ups and OMG-worthy shockers, I’m grading 10 season finales. The SPOILER ALERT is implied.

Reckoning, Revenge’s thrilling season ender saw Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) not only confront her father’s killer in a satisfying and strangely sweet final fight, but surrender to her feelings for ruggedly handsome bartender, Jack. It wouldn’t be “Revenge” without infuriating twists and double-c...

'Big Bang Theory' Star Jim Parsons Outed By New York Times?

May 23rd, 2012 11:08pm EDT
Jim Parsons
Several reports surfaced on Wednesday night saying that the New York Times has outed Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons in a profile piece for the publication.

For some, including Entertainment Weekly's Marc Malkin, the news comes as no surprise, as Parsons - though he's never addressed the matter - isn't really hiding anything.

In fact, Parsons' sexuality is pretty common knowledge in Hollywood.

"[H]is partner of 10 years is often with him when he hits a red carpet or sitting beside him at awards shows and other glam events," Malkin writes.

But Times columnist Patrick Healy interviewed t...

The Ides of March
‘Tis the season… for Ricky Gervais to make nasty jokes and make Robert Downy Jr. blush…. Fa la la la la la la la la. That’s right, the Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning. There were a few surprises, a few snubs, and a few nominees that make you go, “Hmmmm”? Let’s break it down by Movie and TV categories.

Films like 'The Artist' and 'The Help' dominated, not surprisingly.

The most surprising inclusion here? ‘The Ides of March,’ which up ‘til now was considered an also-ran in awards season. But the film picked up nods for Best Drama, Best Director (George Clooney),...

'Big Bang' Star Jim Parsons: 'I Do Think About Retiring'

October 14th, 2011 8:33am EDT
Jim Parsons
"The Big Bang Theory" star Jim Parsons is contemplating an early retirement because he's "tired" of listening to himself speak.

The funnyman has picked up two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Sheldon Cooper on the hit sitcom, but the 38 year old admits he's growing sick of being in the public eye and secretly dreams about bowing out of the industry.

He says, "I do think about retiring... not because I don't want to act anymore but sometimes it just sounds like a good idea to go somewhere (else)... I'm tired of listening to me.'...

"Maybe I could go, like, farm grapes. ...

Q&A: 'The Big Bang Theory's' Mayim Bialik

September 29th, 2011 11:58am EDT
Mayim Bialik
You know how there's that person you just know is smarter than you? Mayim Bialik is one of those people.

Yes, the actress plays a scientist on CBS' hit comedy The Big Bang Theory, but art imitates life: she also has her own Ph.D. in Neuroscience from UCLA, and oh yeah, she's written a book, too. I'll admit that during our first interview last year I was actually a little intimidated. Mayim recently sat down with me again to discuss what's happening in season five of Big Bang and how she's flexing her real-life smarts.

We literally just started season five of Big Bang Theory. Can you ta...

I’m back on the West Coast after a whirlwind weekend to New York to cover the red carpet for Starpulse at the 65th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday. First, the new:

Mike & Molly, Mon. Sept. 20, 9:30/8:30 CST -- America's obesity epidemic has left a lot us a bit fluffier, and "Mike & Molly" might be CBS's attempt to deliver a show we can relate to. Unfortunately, that seems to be the extent of the humor -- being fluffy. 2010 Emmys: Who Should Win & Who Will Win

2010 Emmys
It’s a transitional year for the Emmys, meaning this is one of the more exciting races in recent memories. The flood of new nominees (brought on by a stellar development slate) means that we can no longer rely on the predictable Emmy voting to determine winners. Instead, this is a year where we can see many newcomers emerging and starting a whole new slate of predictable nominees.

Yes, that was a little cynical, but it’s the sad truth of the Emmys – habits are hard to break for the voters. Luckily, this year the virgin nominees have afforded them an extensive choice for brand new habits.

Everything Geeky - We Geeks Hate You Too, Emmys

As many eager television viewers may know, the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards was on Sunday evening, and despite going up against a very important football game it scored the higher ratings than the past three years. The Emmys have been declining in viewership, as have most of the major awards shows, and last year was especially dismal.

Luckily the Emmys decided to bolster their show by having a fan favorite as the host - CBS golden boy Neil Patrick Harris - and have a generally well written script for the presenters and in-between segments. This is all well and good, but for geekdom, it wa...

Ah, the Emmys. The one Awards show on TV that has a nonchalant attitude toward its honorees and the medium it seeks to honor. A ceremony that seeks to put on a funny show, not blow smoke up the behinds of the many winners mostly seem like they'd rather not be there.

Sure, the last couple years were awful, but this year we have the inimitable Neil Patrick Harris at the helm, and with the possibility that this may be Emmy's final year on broadcast television, they're certain to pull out all the stops and ratchet up the funny.

And with that stellar introduction, here is the 2009 Primet...

Before the show was over I decided the concept of [Title of Show] might be too difficult to describe with words, so I thought that instead I would write about my experiences writing a review.

What will my lead be? Perhaps something about how I am not a "theatre guy." Then again, nobody has ever confused me for one. I need to...
