'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: 'I Helu Pu' (2.16)

February 14th, 2012 3:10am EST
Hawaii Five-O
Hawaii Five-0 does its damnedest to break its formula this week, but that doesn't invigorate the show as much as you might think. Quite the opposite: it actually does a little damage.

As we start, Lori Weston's got a lot of blood on her hands...literally. She walks out of the bathroom and we find out that she's in a hospital, asking after Steve and getting in trouble with Lieutenant Governor Denning for causing an international incident. Denning reminds us that he assigned her to this task force, so perhaps he'll end up reassigning her elsewhere.

Eighteen hours earlier, everything i...

'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: 'Mai Ka Wa Kahiko' (2.15)

February 7th, 2012 3:21am EST
Hawaii Five-O
After some reruns, Hawaii Five-0 finally brings us a new episode. This one involves a law enforcement officer who meets a bloody end in an airplane bathroom. Not the way I'd want to go out.

Upon arriving at the crime scene, Danny realizes that he knew the victim, U.S. Marshal Dave Collins. Chin reports that there are two missing passengers - the felon Dave was transporting, Sal Painter (that's Sons of Anarchy's Theo Rossi) and another man posing as Rick McGuire. Five-0 immediately moves to talk to the key witness against Sal, Holly Malone (White Collar's Gloria Votsis), who tips th...

An admission: I love the Fast & Furious films. So give me Hawaii Five-0 taking after the Fast & Furious films, and I'm a happy girl.

The show opens big, with Honolulu Police cruisers trying to catch a speedy flame-red set of wheels and finding a whole host of beautiful cars inside locked shipping containers. One of them has a dead body sans fingerprints in the trunk. This allows us to use Hawaii's car culture as the episode's backdrop. (It also means Lauren German gets primped as if she's trying to channel Michelle Rodriguez - if Rodriguez's Letty had driven a bait car.) There are ...

'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: 'Lapa'au' (2.08)

Hawaii Five-O
What do you do when a plane with a corpse in it crashes down? You call the best cops in Hawaii and hope they can make sense of it. Welcome to Hawaii Five-0.

That is, when they're not watching B-movies in Danny's new dive of an apartment. In all honesty, I think Scott Caan and Alex O'Loughlin would do great if Mystery Science Theater 3000 ever came back. Their banter belongs on a Rifftrax.

Back to the case: the corpse belongs to an ICE agent. That's how we meet Jeff Morrison (Masi Oka's former Heroes costar Greg Grunberg), who was the deceased lady's boss. Jeff is taking the situati...

Hawaii Five-O
Dear Television: please stop feeling compelled to do 'theme' episodes for holidays.

Rarely are holiday-related episodes that good; most of them don't have much substance to them beyond the gimmick of whatever special date they're centered around. (A rare exception was NBC's Life, which had a second season episode entitled "Black Friday," but that episode was good because it was well-written and acted, not necessarily because of any particular festive addition.) This week's Hawaii Five-0 started by evoking reminders of The Blair Witch Project and didn't really improve from there.

Fall TV Progress Report: Grading 10 New And Returning Shows

October 14th, 2011 1:00pm EDT
dennings, behrs
Fall is one of my favorite times of year, and it’s not because of everything from, lattes to cakes, is pumpkin-flavored and stores are stuffed with caramel apples. It’s because there is a fresh, shiny crop of new and returning shows to devour. Most shows are at least three episodes in, so it’s time to grade 10 new and returning shows to gauge their progress in this burgeoning season.

'Hawaii Five-O' 2.01 'Ha'i'ole' Review

Hawaii Five-O
I have to admit that I didn't know what to expect from the season premiere of Hawaii Five-O. I was merely crossing my fingers and hoping it improved from its nearly shark-jumping first-season finale. Thankfully, that will just be a bad memory, because the show has come back in fine if not excellent form.

Steve's in prison awaiting trial for the murder of Governor Jameson. Danny's visiting him just to introduce his former SEAL instructor, Lieutenant Commander Joe White (Terry O'Quinn of Lost and, to me, the dad from The Cutting Edge), who wants to lend him a hand. Chin Ho, now a lieuten...

'Hawaii Five-O' 1.11 'Palekeiko' Review

Hawaii Five-O
There's been a lot of Hawaii Five-O buzz this week, with the news that the show is bringing on Reiko Aylesworth in a potentially recurring role and casting for a new series regular. In case you're keeping score, if you add in the two other recurring characters - Max Bergman and Mary Ann McGarrett - that's doubling the main cast in less than one season, depending on your definition of recurring. Yet both Max and Mary Ann have been suspiciously MIA, at least until tonight, when Max returns to the fold in order to help Five-O with a murder-abduction. (No idea where Mary Ann is for the six...

'Heroes' Recap: A Slow, Boring Episode

The two-hour premier was sadly misleading. It made audiences believe every episode would be entertaining and insightful. Perhaps "Heroes" cannot fulfill its weekly purpose caged within just one small hour per week. Maybe they need two hours every week in order for us to understand how certain plot lines make any sense whatsoever.

This week starts off with a whimper. Peter looks proudly at his latest clipping. He single handedly averted a MTA bus crisis. Claire tries to avoid Gretchen and the leader of the carnival, Samuel, decides to suck some ink into his hand and go looking for Peter.
