TV Report Card: Grading 10 Season Finales

May 25th, 2012 12:07pm EDT
Revenge Cast
Season finales are essentially the Hollywood version of final exams. They have to shock and awe and entice viewers into returning after four arduous months of dead air. From births and deaths to break-ups and OMG-worthy shockers, I’m grading 10 season finales. The SPOILER ALERT is implied.

Reckoning, Revenge’s thrilling season ender saw Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) not only confront her father’s killer in a satisfying and strangely sweet final fight, but surrender to her feelings for ruggedly handsome bartender, Jack. It wouldn’t be “Revenge” without infuriating twists and double-c...

Miranda Lambert & Ashton Kutcher Make Up At Kentucky Derby Gala

May 6th, 2012 10:37am EDT
Miranda Lambert
Several celebrities attended the Kentucky Derby Barnstable-Brown Gala in Louisville on Saturday and Miranda Lambert and Ashton Kutcher appeared to have mended ways after the singer accused the actor of making fun of country music.

Kutcher's cowboy clothing and a Capella rendition of George Strait's "I Cross My Heart" at the Academy of Country Music Awards in April made Lambert and others feel like he was mocking the genre.

The pair have apparently moved on from the incident. Lambert posted a photo of the two of them on Twitter, writing "here it is y'all. He is sweet and lives country musi...

'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: 'Pu'olo' (2.14)

January 17th, 2012 2:04am EST
Hawaii Five-O
After last week's underwhelming Hawaii Five-0, we finally find out who Shelburne is...and that's pretty much it.

We get a flashback to 1992, where Steve is having a talk with his father (William Sadler, if you forgot). Dad is sending Steve and Mary Ann back to the mainland. "It's not safe for you here anymore," he says. This doesn't go over well with teenage Steve, but present-day Steve totally gets it. And is totally following Joe, until he gets a call about a delivery truck being hit. What got stolen? Something that needed to be snuck past Customs.

The Five-0 team has to go to Sa...

'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: 'Ka Ho'oponopono' (2.13)

Hawaii Five-O
This week's Hawaii Five-0 wins for "Most O's in an Episode Title." Unfortunately, that's about all it wins, as it's a rather lackluster return for a generally great show.

Who would hire a professional killer to off a teenage girl? That's the question of the week when Emily Winter is discovered deceased. Her father (Clayton Norcross) has no idea why his daughter would be targeted, but tells Steve that she stole a check from him and wrote it out for five thousand dollars. We discover that this was in order to help her friend Karen (Courtney Coleman), who's being blackmailed over her...

'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: 'Alaheo Pau'ole' (2.12)

Hawaii Five-O
We've come to Hawaii Five-0's fall finale, and it encapsulates the season to date: perhaps not remarkable, but watchable, and leaving us wondering where it's all going.

When a dead body (who later turns out to be quite alive) is found inside an abandoned bunker, it's up to our heroes to close the case and still make it to Chin's wedding. This involves live grenades, a perp dumpster diving, and a run-in with newly-promoted Captain Fryer (Tom Sizemore). The man they found is Fryer's prime suspect in the murder of Bridgett Turner. His wife (that's NYPD Blue's Gail O'Grady) has no idea...

Hawaii Five-O
When I was a kid, I never liked school buses. This week's Hawaii Five-0 reminds me of that feeling - although thankfully I was never kidnapped by a drug cartel.

Do you recognize the shooter from the opening teaser? You should. That's Aimee Garcia. She's currently also playing Jamie Batista on Dexter. Here she's working for a drug cartel that would like its cocaine back. Her co-conspirator is played by Rick Gomez, who just appeared on Burn Notice as a kidnap victim. They're just two of the many familiar faces that populate this action-packed episode.

Governor Denning utters the "we don't...

'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: 'Ki'ilua' (2.10)

Hawaii Five-O
This week's Hawaii Five-0 feels like a sweeps episode. Our hero held at gunpoint by a former friend and in need of rescue? Definite attention-getter. Thankfully, "Ki'ilua" doesn't stop there, keeping hold of us through the hour.

Before we get to that point, though, we must deal with the murder of investigative reporter Bethany Morris (Kaytlin Borgen), who gets yanked out from under her bed like Maggie Grace in Taken. The obvious question is "What was she working on that got her killed?" Seems Bethany was a whistleblower poking her nose around in corporate business. Nothing you have...

Fall TV Progress Report: Grading 10 New And Returning Shows

October 14th, 2011 1:00pm EDT
dennings, behrs
Fall is one of my favorite times of year, and it’s not because of everything from, lattes to cakes, is pumpkin-flavored and stores are stuffed with caramel apples. It’s because there is a fresh, shiny crop of new and returning shows to devour. Most shows are at least three episodes in, so it’s time to grade 10 new and returning shows to gauge their progress in this burgeoning season.

NEW SHOWS

“2 Broke Girls” CBS Mondays 8:30 P.M. EST

“2 Broke Girls” is a snappy, odd couple sitcom about Max (“Thor’s” Kat Dennings), an uber-sarcastic and cynical waitress who takes in Caroline (Bet...

'Hawaii Five-O' Recap: 'Mea Makamae' (2.04)

Hawaii Five-O
Ladies and gentlemen, it's "name that guest star" week on Hawaii Five-O. Did you spot all the familiar faces? Unfortunately, they don't make up for the underlying flaws that are appearing to be common to this season.

A faux-Jaws opening leads us to discovering the hand of Blake Spencer, a salvage diver. (If you want to see my reaction to the resulting scene in Max's office, just watch Steve's face.) Into The Blue this is not (except for the mutual presence of Scott Caan).

Steve and Danny are soon learning about a mysterious next gig that may be the reason Blake ended up in pieces....

'Hawaii Five-O' Review: 'Kame'e' (2.03)

Hawaii Five-O
Thanks to this week's Hawaii Five-O, I've found another reason to dislike camping: you just might find a corpse in the tent. Not cool, show. Not cool at all.

Steve and Commander White (Terry O'Quinn) - who's put in for a transfer to Pearl Harbor - have their bonding session broken up by this development - the body is that of a SEAL named Clay Garcia. Max tells Steve that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but White and Garcia's wife Marissa (Sarah Roemer) aren't so sure. Looking over the evidence again (after Steve needles him into doing so), Max declares that G...

2010 Emmys: Who Should Win & Who Will Win

2010 Emmys
It’s a transitional year for the Emmys, meaning this is one of the more exciting races in recent memories. The flood of new nominees (brought on by a stellar development slate) means that we can no longer rely on the predictable Emmy voting to determine winners. Instead, this is a year where we can see many newcomers emerging and starting a whole new slate of predictable nominees.

Yes, that was a little cynical, but it’s the sad truth of the Emmys – habits are hard to break for the voters. Luckily, this year the virgin nominees have afforded them an extensive choice for brand new habits.

This might be the most difficult thing I've ever written, and I can't even figure out how to get started. LOST has changed television, and if you don't believe that, you don't understand what an incredible show it was. Even haters can realize that with its original plotline and encouragement of science fiction in a major network, it opened doors for shows outside of the box to maybe be taken more seriously than they used to. It was a community show, one that encouraged the millions of fans to think and discuss and speculate together in a way that had never been seen. It decided to cancel it...

This is the episode of the LOST's that all the fans were breathlessly awaiting, and now that it has come and gone ... the general feeling afterward is 'meh.' The problem comes down to expectation, and with only a few episodes left of this incredible show, people are getting impatient for answers. Honestly, I don't expect them to answer half of the questions they should, because then it would just be three hours of telling the audience exposition. Still, in an episode that is said to have long reaching answers and prove they knew what they were doing from the beginning, there should actuall...

If you're a LOST fan, you already know this is going to be a difficult recap. The show is no stranger to intense tragedy, especially not when early on they established that anyone could die at any time. The most shocking example of this was probably when Ana Lucia and Libby died in one foul swoop, and at the hands of another Lostie at that. However, never on the show has an episode taken four characters in one pivotal scene, three of whom were regulars from season one. It was harsh, it was violent, and for the first time the fans probably do believe it when the writers say the ending of thi...

One of the best parts about a show like "LOST" is that even after years, fans still remember the details.
