Natalie Portman's Pink Crocheted Dress - Hot Or Not?

June 11th, 2010 1:49pm EDT
Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman recently attended an event honoring director Mike Nichols in a strapless pink crocheted dress. The star usually looks great on the red carpet, but we're not particularly fond of this pastel creation. What do you think?

The actress has several projects in production, including "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits" about a woman who is put through the ringer by her stepson; "Black Swan," which focuses on a feud between two ballerinas; "Your Highness," which follows two princes as they head out on a journey to save their king; "Thor," a big-budget adventure that chronicles the ...

'Charlie Wilson's War'- Momentous But Momentless

December 21st, 2007 10:11am EST
Charlie Wilson
Charlie Wilson was a man who took risks with seemingly no regard to the danger he was placing himself in. He would rather make a joke than admit defeat. Ultimately, when he's resolved to take action, he lowers his head and rams into adversity - crashing down hallways and flying in jet airplanes, unflappable and resolute.

Charlie Wilson's War is no different. Helmed by one of the greatest directors of all time, Academy and Tony award winner Mike Nichols ("The Graduate," "Catch 22," "The Birdcage," "Primary Colors" and Broadways' "Spamalot," "Odd Couple," and "Barefoot in the Park"), the...

War Comes to Hollywood

November 12th, 2007 9:43am EST
Redacted
As far back as the 30s, celebrities and even cartoon characters endorsed the purchase of war bonds to support World War I. Then again, there were those who opposed war. For example, producers came up with films such as "Johnny Got his Gun" in 1971, which was based on the 1938 anti-war novel by Dalton Trumbo.

Today the genre has become a standard by directors, writers, and producers who have a missive for the mass audience. Although many films, such as Robert Altman's 1970 film "M*A*S*H," were thinly disguised as the Korean War to show opposition to Vietnam, just as many were made f...

Blunt couldn't believe her luck when she was cast opposite Hanks and Julia Roberts in her moviemaking hero's latest film - but she isn't proud of her acting.

She says, "I have a rather raunchy scene with Tom Hanks, and he couldn't have been nicer about it. It was that weird thing where I'm crawling all over him, and suddenly my mind drifts off and I'm like, 'Oh, I loved you in Turner & Hooch.'

March 20th, 2007 10:32am EDT

The Good German director Mike Nichols had to double up as a dialect coach, because the expert hired for the movie couldn't speak German. The coach was fired after the film was shown to German speakers and they couldn't understand what was being said.

Star George Clooney reveals German-born Nichols ended up helping him perfect the language and accent at the very last minute.

He says, "It was brutal. We had a dialect coach on the set who apparently didn't speak any German. We didn't know. He would say, 'That was good.'

"So, for dubbing, Mike was my dialect coach. He would say, ...

Director Helped George Clooney Perfect His German

December 5th, 2006 10:10am EST
The Good German
Moviemaker Mike Nichols had to be drafted in at the last minute to help George Clooney perfect his German in new period thriller The Good German. The director is fluent in German and assisted Clooney when it was clear the lines he'd learned phonetically from a dialect coach were nonsense.

Clooney, who also learned to speak a little Farsi for the Steven Soderbergh film, explains, "We had this dialect coach on the set who clearly didn't speak a word of German. The dialect coach said, `Perfect, yah that was gud.' Then he went away and I recorded the dialog. The months passed and Steven c...

Streep's 'Devil Wears Prada' Role Was Inspired by Clint Eastwood

September 8th, 2006 9:27am EDT
Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep mentally "put a dress" on directors Clint Eastwood and Mike Nichols in order to garner inspiration for her hard-bitten role in The Devil Wears Prada. Streep, who plays fashion editor Miranda Priestly in the movie, has always been bemused that toughness in men is always accepted, but in women it is seen in a negative light.

But she chose to use this reality to inspire her steely character. She says, "Clint Eastwood would say 'Give me that' and it would be given to him. That same directive, that same tone of voice from a woman is intolerable. A woman who says 'Give me that'...
