Interview: 'Adventures In The Sin Bin' Actor Tim Blake Nelson On The Joy Of Unfamiliar Territory

10/17/2013 10:20am EDT
Adventures in the Sin Bin
When it comes to actors with a knack for creating long lasting quirky characters nobody does it better than Tim Blake Nelson.  A classically trained thespian (and also accomplished director), Nelson has an ability to take decent side characters and make them shine bright.  Whether it’s as part of the singing chain gang in the Coen Brothers flick "O Brother, Where Art Though?" or the timid object of Robin Tunney’s affection in the hidden gem "Cherish," Nelson is by far one of the finest character actors working today.  (Just ask Spielberg via "Lincoln!")  His latest project titled "Adventure...

Ten Films I Love That You've Never Heard Of

9/9/2012 2:30pm EDT
Brittany's Blog: This is my viewpoint, from the far end of the couch...and this weekend, I'm busy re-organizing my DVD collection. All 3,000-plus of them. But while I own my fair share of blockbusters, I also have a special place in my heart for lesser-known movies. A lot of great films fly under the radar, and as I'm moving a few of them around on my shelves, I thought I ought to share them with you.

In alphabetical order, here are ten of my favorite flicks that you probably didn't know existed, and links so you can pick them up for yourselves (which you should).

1. Archangel (2005): Eve...

'Chaos' Advance Review

3/31/2011 3:00pm EDT
For personal reasons, spy series have always intrigued me. And we've seen that humor can mix with espionage (see Burn Notice). So why is Chaos neither intriguing nor funny?

For one, it's just too cute. Like the main character, fresh-faced CIA newbie Rick Martinez (Freddy Rodriguez), the entire pilot is overeager. It's trying too hard to be funny, which has the effect of making it painfully not funny. For example, I gather that we're supposed to be amused that we're talking about Clandestine Administration and Oversight Services, because we can call it CHAOS, which is also the title o...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies 'Clash Of The Titans,' 'The Last Song' & More

3/29/2010 8:55am EDT
Why Did I Get Married Too
I’m going to see “Clash of the Titans” this week but honestly I’m not terribly excited about the film. To me it seems like your run-of-the-mill epic action/fantasy with loads of computer generated effects and explosions. I have yet to see a preview that has made me think this movie has anything special to offer. The only things that have my attention are the amusing tagline “Damn the Gods,” and the presence of Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, and Ralph Fiennes. As a critic though, I often approach films with the hope that they will prove my preexisting notions wrong, and “Clash of the Tita...

American Violet DVD release
Based on true events in the midst of the 2000 election, American Violet tells the astonishing story of Dee Roberts (critically hailed newcomer Nicole Beharie), a 24 year-old African American single mother of four young girls living in a small Texas town who is barely making ends meet on a waitress' salary and government subsidies.

On an early November morning while Dee works a shift at the local diner, the powerful local district attorney (Michael O'Keefe) leads an extensive drug bust, sweeping her Arlington Springs housing project with military precision. Police drag Dee from work in h...

Zombies Become Domesticated In The Satirical 'Fido'

5/8/2007 8:30pm EDT
Welcome to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the 50's, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbor, and rotting zombies deliver the mail.

Years ago, the earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead to rise with a craving for human flesh. A war began, pitting the living against the dead. In the ensuing revolution, a corporation was born: ZomCon, who defeated the legions of undead, and domesticated the zombies, making them our industrial workers, our domestic servants - a productive part of society. ZomCon would like the people of Wil...
