31 Days Of Horror Weekend Round-Up: "Poltergeist," "Puppet Master," "House on Sorority Row"

October 12th, 2010 9:44am EDT
Poltergeist
Oct 9 – Poltergeist (1982): Because of Poltergeist’s popularity and because of its association with Steven Spielberg (who produced, and according to some reports, co-directed along with Tobe Hooper), I have always thought of Poltergeist as being a kind of family-friendly horror movie. I imagined it as the kind of movie that could scare the pants off of a ten-year-old and leave parents chuckling at them as they cower beneath a pillow. What I didn’t expect was a chaotic, and at times visceral haunted house story that manages to undercut the budding Reagan revolution while playing on the laten...

Pilot Recap: The Who’s Who And What’s What Of 'Parenthood'

March 4th, 2010 9:27am EST
Parenthood
The premiere of the ensemble dramedy “Parenthood” felt a lot like a typical family gathering – some parts are good, some parts are bad, and you’re full by the time you leave. In this Pilot episode, we met about 20 characters in as many minutes, and spent the rest of the hour sorting out who was who, as a whole lot of plot points began to materialize. In summary, here’s what we learned:

At the top of the Braverman family tree are Zeek and Camille played by Craig T. Nelson and Bonnie Bedelia. The senior-most Mom and Dad in the ‘hood have four adult children, who are now in various stages of...

'Monk' Series Finale Part 1

November 30th, 2009 1:50pm EST
Monk
Wow, for all the talk about "Monk" needing to end and that this final season was a long time coming, the official finale feels like it came so fast. The series finale is split into two parts, one that aired last week and the second that will air this Friday. It's amazing to think that there will never be a new "Monk" after Friday. I don't think it's set in after eight years just yet.

The finale promises that Trudy Monk's death will finally be solved, and hopefully the show will end in a way that is satisfying for the fans and for the writers. Part 1 of the finale starts out twelve years ...

This Week's Movie Buzz: See It, Rent It, Or Skip It?

June 15th, 2009 9:02am EDT
Year One
I finally got around to seeing "Terminator Salvation," and I must admit I wasn't terribly impressed. Overall the film was better than "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," but that doesn't say a whole lot because "T3" was pretty bad. Sam Worthington and Anton Yelchin were great, while Christian Bale gave an okay performance. I was expecting a more epic movie considering all its hype.

This week there are five films premiering: "Year One," "The Proposal," "Whatever Works," "Food Inc," and "Dead Snow." There are three I think are worth seeing, and two I think you should wait to rent.

Best Celebrity Voice Acting Roles

June 12th, 2009 9:22am EDT
Kung Fu Panda
Voice acting is a much more lucrative business than one might imagine, with the actors in question providing their voice for animated movies, video games, television shows, voice overs, and anything else that requires a voice but no face. Some actors do only that kind of work, giving themselves a certain amount of fame in that industry, such as "The Simpsons" cast.

Everything changed when voice acting became a business not only for unknowns, but also an attractive fad for celebrities who wanted to broaden their horizons ... or make a movie "for the kids." Now it seems that no animated...

We have to say, the process of compiling a list of the best athlete cameos has been done to death. We get it; Keith Hernandez was hilarious in Seinfeld (he was), and Mr. Burns' All Star softball team episode of The Simpsons is a classic (it is). We wanted to delve a bit deeper though, really flesh out some more obscure and odd cameos' from our favorite stars in the world of sports.
