In Memoriam: Stars We Lost In 2011

December 29th, 2011 10:30am EST
Stars We Lost In 2011
As 2012 approaches, it's appropriate to look back at which stars we lost over the last year. As always, the number of famous names on the list seems astounding. Each one meant something to many people, and their legacies will live on forever in the hundreds of films, TV shows and songs on which they left their mark.

It's impossible to include everyone, but we think these are among the most notable deaths of the year.

Let's take a look back. These are in no particular order.

Harry Morgan, 96

The lovable TV and film actor will always be best known for playing the fatherly Col. Potter on '...

Remembering 'M*A*S*H' Star Harry Morgan

December 7th, 2011 6:40pm EST
Harry Morgan
As Colonel Sherman T. Potter might say, “Mule muffins.” Lovable character actor Harry Morgan died this morning at the age of 96. His family said he had battled pneumonia recently.

Morgan hadn’t acted on TV or film since 1999, after appearing in a sitcom called ‘Love & Money’ and doing a guest arc on ‘3rd Rock From the Sun.’ But his career spanned approximately six decades. In addition to his iconic TV roles on ‘Dragnet’ and ‘M*A*S*H,’ he appeared in dozens of movies dating back to 1942.

The Norwegian-blooded actor was born in 1915, just three years after the Titanic sank and less than a y...

My Favorite TV Police

May 28th, 2011 3:00pm EDT
The Chicago Code
There's no group of people that I love seeing on the small screen than the police. Having been there and done that, I have a certain affection for good portrayals of the men and women in law enforcement. Now that we've recently celebrated Police Week, here's my tribute to the TV cops (note: not federal agents or anything else - just cops!) who've left impressions on me over the years.

Sergeant Joe Friday (Jack Webb) and Detective Ben Gannon (Harry Morgan), NBC's Dragnet

My earliest memories of TV cops have to do with one of the most storied franchises in the genre. Thanks to Nick ...

Interview: Nicole Sullivan Rocks!

January 12th, 2009 10:56am EST
Nicole Sullivan
(TJAGS weekly column) It was 9:30 PM, on a Thursday night, and I was in the middle of dinner and (more than a few) drinks at a local establishment. My phone starts vibrating in my left pocket, I don't recognize the number. I sheepishly answer and on the other end is the unmistakable voice of Nicole Sullivan (MADtv, The King of Queens, Rita Rocks) asking if this was a good time to speak. Our interview, scheduled earlier in the day, had been postponed -- I had thought, wrongly -- to another day.

She did not want to impose and explained we could reschedule. "Nonsense," I said, "we can st...

When Enough Is Enough: Worst TV Spin-Offs

February 26th, 2008 2:21pm EST
Saved by the Bell: The New Class
The logic behind the spin-off is very sound. Take a beloved character or concept from a pre-existing series and create an entire new show. You have an established character or brand and thus a built-in fan base. It makes perfect sense, no?

Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is not quite that simple. Certainly there have been spin-offs that attracted both fans and critics and managed to create a legacy all their own. Shows like "Frasier," "Angel," and "The Jeffersons" instantly come to mind. But for every successful spin-off, there have been dozens of miserable failures...
