SNL Names Michael Che First African-American 'Weekend Update' Anchor

September 12th, 2014 3:03pm EDT
SNL Names Michael Che First African-American 'Weekend Update' An
In yet another groundbreaking move for the struggling Saturday night mainstay, "SNL" has named it's first African-American Weekend Update Anchor, comedian Michael Che. Che will replace Cecily Strong, who will continue to remain on the sketch comedy series.

Che is the third person to helm the anchor desk since the departure of Seth Meyers earlier this year. Meyers went on to host "The Late Show with Seth Meyers." Meyers introduced Strong to much fanfare at the beginning of season 39, in the hopes of making the transition easier for viewers. Strong never caught on as "WU" anchor. She was lat...

Fallon will be bringing his house band, The Roots, with him, and Meyers announced on Monday that he's found his own studio band, the 8G Band -- named after studio where the show will be taped in New York City's Rockefeller Center.

"Here's the first photo of the new @LateNightSeth band!" Meyers tweeted on Monday ...

Jon Hamm
The St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox are headed to the World Series in a rematch of their 2004 series in which the Red Sox swept the Cardinals in four games to win their first title since 1918. The Cardinals have won the World Series twice since 2004 and were one game away from reaching the World Series last year.  However, we're more interested in what really matters: which team has the better celebrity fans! Let's take a look:

Jon Hamm, Cardinals: "Oh, my God, I’ve always been a huge Cardinals fan. I remember going to the World Series in ’82, ’85 and ’87, and this is amazing," Hamm...

Guests at the ceremony included family and friends, along with Meyers' SNL co-stars past and present, including Kenan Thompson, Kristen Wiig, Will Forte, Jimmy Fallon and Jason Sudeikis and his girlfriend Olivia Wilde.

"They are so in love," a source tells People magazine. "They (were) really excited to celebrate their big day with all their close friends and family."

Seth Meyers Confirmed As New 'Late Night' Host

May 13th, 2013 3:07pm EDT
Seth Meyers
NBC has confirmed Saturday Night Live head writer Seth Meyers will be taking over Late Night for Jimmy Fallon when he moves to the Tonight Show slot.

The news was expected for some time, as Meyers was considering the frontrunner for the spot - especially with Lorne Michaels taking over NBC's late night shows. "It will be Seth unless something goes awry," a source said back on April 3.

The only question is what SNL will do if Meyers has to leave and focus on his talk show. Meyers has been the head writer since 2006, when he shared the role with Tina Fey.

It also remains to be seen what so...

Celebrity Tweets: Reaction To Libyan Dictator Moammar Gadhafi's Death

October 21st, 2011 12:00pm EDT
Seth Meyers
The big global news yesterday was the capture and death of Libyan Dictator Moammar Gadhafi at the hands of rebels. Of course, celebrities took to their Twitter accounts to react to the stunning news.

Head SNL writer Seth Meyers tweeted: "Gadhaffi's last words were 'How my hair look, Mike?' #Unconfirmed" and "And he was so close to making general #Gadhaffi."

Seth then pointed readers to comic Colin Quinn, who wrote a series of tweets on the situation as was receiving angry responses. Quinn wrote posts such as "Another great innovator who started in the 80's and regained popularity recently...

Is 'Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update Thursday' Too Much?

September 17th, 2009 1:59pm EDT
Amy Poehler
"Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update Thursdays" returns tonight and in the words of co-anchors Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler, all we can say is 'Really?!?!' Last year's brief inaugural run of the show at least made some sense as the country was in the midst of an election, and with controversial candidates like Sarah Palin and Barack Obama, there was a goldmine of controversy for the writers to feed off (not to mention any reason to bring Tina Fey around is a good reason).

Now, however, there will only be one night in between "WUT" and "SNL" and how much could possibly happen during t...

Writer's Viewpoint: 'Saturday Night Live' Replaces Two Cast Members

September 8th, 2009 2:59pm EDT
Michaela Watkins - Casey Wilson
Stunning reports have come out recently regarding Saturday Night Live. Anonymous sources reported to Access Hollywood that SNL will be replacing Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson with Jenny Slate and Nasim Pedrad and Yahoo TV! reports that Kristen Wiig will be joining Seth Meyers on Weekend Update.

I am certainly not privy of the details concerning the release of the two, so it is unfair for me to speculate as to the reason for their departure. That said, it seems as though they were on the show but for the blink of an eye and are being thrown out as if they were the drunken, err, coca...

An Insider's Look At 'SNL' Behind The Scenes

April 1st, 2009 10:53am EDT
SNL
I am a Saturday Night Live junkie - so much so that at times I have trouble hiding how big of a fan when that little thing called professionalism may be at stake. It was so apparent in the interview I conducted with current featured player Bobby Moynihan - a self-described "SNL" nerd himself - that he casually mentioned the prospect of me attending a show.

Now I could tell Bobby was a really nice guy, but I thought he was just trying to be polite. I was pleasantly surprised (read: screamed like a 12 year old girl!) when a week later he followed up on that invitation and asked if I wan...

'Saturday Night Live': Post-Election

December 2nd, 2008 10:04am EST
Saturday Night Live
Saturday Night Live is not funny. Some of the skits are funny, some, but the show as a whole is not. The former meter of comedic excellence has not so much stepped away from the glory days of John Belushi and Chevy Chase as much as it has dove. Even Cheri Oteri, whose career is on the wane since her days cheerleading alongside Will Ferrell, chose to cameo on the soon-to-be-cancelled Boston Legal as opposed to her alma mater.

Yes, the election has returned SNL to brief heights of hilarity. But, what does it mean when the most memorable skits of the new season featured two former cast m...

TV Stars Who Deserve Emmy Nominations On July 17, Part 2

July 15th, 2008 10:42am EDT
Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock
Enough drama, time to laugh! The Emmy nominations are upon us, two days away in fact, so it's time to round out our suggestions to The Academy's blue ribbon panel. In the final installment, the focus turns to comedy and the actors who make us laugh every week.

This category is far more loaded than the drama section with far fewer obvious mistakes on the ballot and a ton of strong performances from the men and the women (rather than watching the ladies struggle with substandard material from their mostly male counterparts. Yes, I will clamor for more female writers and directors every...

TV Stars Who Deserve Emmy Nominations On July 17, Part 1

July 8th, 2008 11:55am EDT
Boston Legal
Last week, I helped the Emmy panelists decide upon which series to cast their vote for, and now it's the actors' turn.

The Emmy blue ribbon panel received a group of lists from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences last week. These were top ten lists from which they were to select the five nominees for the big Emmy show. They will view select episodes from each nominee and base their decision on what they see.

It's nigh on impossible to glean an accurate impression from a small sample, especially when it comes to acting. Many characters are given complex arcs from which the...

Meet The Cast That's Going To Save 'Saturday Night Live'

May 9th, 2008 9:00am EDT
Saturday Night Live
For those of you who have been keeping score, it has been a long time since Saturday Night Live, once the premier, end all and be all of comedy on television, has held the clout it once demanded. In fact, many of those who grew up on the late night comedy show have long since grown disinterested and weary of sub par casts, guests, and skits. "Saturday Night Live" was declared dead by popular consensus. And yet, after 33 seasons, it is making a new bid with some fresh faces. Sound the alarm - the funniest night of the week is back:

Top 10 MADtv Actors

May 5th, 2008 8:30am EDT
Dan Chruscinski
Previously filmed in Los Angeles, it's Saturday night. Never quite catching on with the same fervor as its New York competition, MADtv has still carved a niche for itself appealing to a younger demographic who favor repeat characters and dead-on celebrity impersonations over topical sketches. Like Saturday Night Live though, "MADtv" has had some fantastic cast members during its 13-year tenure as well as some real clunkers. Why focus on the bad though when we can celebrate the good. Some of these actors have gone on to mediocre careers; others still remain stuck in obscurity. Here are the ...

Low Times Mean Good Times With Andy Kindler, Part 1

April 1st, 2008 10:39am EDT
Andy Kindler
There seems to be a relationship between the state of comedian Andy Kindler's career and the state of American culture. The worse the economy, the less informative the news, and the poorer the satire, the more opportunities Andy gets. This past month alone Andy has been on Letterman, Comedy Central's The Root of all Evil, and was even profiled by the LA Times. "To a man like me," says Andy, "Who brings joy to the non-masses, I'm going to be able to profit during down times." What's down, what's coming, and what's funny about it is the subject of this Starpulse Q and A with comedian Andy Kin...
