Burgess Meredith
Songs and Stories of the Gold Rush
Release Date: 1960
Label: Epic
Rating:

This is an entertaining artifact from the days when records were able to serve the dual purpose of entertainment and education. It's not clear whether it was aimed more at serious listeners and classroom audiences, or the more casual folk song enthusiast and younger listeners enamored of the west. Burgess Meredith reads various texts associated with the days of the gold rush in the west, and a performing group called the Quartones provide songs in between Meredith's readings. The actor is superb -- he was in much demand at the time as a narrator, and anyone who only knows him from his later work as The Penguin on Batman or the trainer in the Rocky movies can discover why here. The Quartones are less interesting than they are enthusiastic. This record, like most of the historical and spoken word projects generated by Columbia Records, has fallen into obscurity in the decades since its release. Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
