Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall wanted to play a trick on his hard partying leading lady Julia Roberts, but the onset prank became one of the film's most famous scenes.

The scene featuring Roberts' character reacting with shock when Richard Gere closes a jewelry box on her hand is much loved by fans of the 1990 romantic comedy.

However, Marshall has revealed it was just meant to be little scene for the cast and crew as revenge for Roberts staying out late the night before the shoot.

'New Year's Eve' Beats 'The Sitter' At Weekend Box Office

Star-studded romantic comedy "New Year's Eve" has crawled to the top of the box office chart in the slowest weekend of ticket sales in three years.

The movie, starring Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, grossed a weak $13.7 million in its opening weekend - a stark contrast to director Garry Marshall's last hit, 2010's "Valentine's Day," which also featured an ensemble cast and debuted with a healthy $56.3 million.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's Shutter Island is thrilling cinemagoers - the movie has topped the box office chart, taking $40.2 million during its debut weekend.

Emmy-winning comedy writer Jerry Belson, famed for his work on "The Tracey Ullman Show" and The Dick Van Dyke Show, has died of cancer. He was 68. The much-loved "writer's writer" passed away at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday, according to his writing partner, director Garry Marshall.

Belson won three Emmy awards for his work with comedienne Tracey Ullman and was nominated for a further 17 Emmys in his career.
