September 29th, 2010 9:35am EDT
Stephanie Powell
The Powells seem like an average family; Jim is a sketch artist for the police, and Stephanie is a renowned scientist. Their children Daphne and JJ struggle with boyfriends and school, and while Stephanie spends her time working eighty hours a week, Jim worries about his family pulling apart.

Stephanie's work is sending her to Brazil, and Jim convinces her to make it a family vacation. The kids are too thrilled about the idea, but they don't get much of a choice. Jim is determined to get his family together for the first time since their trip to Yellowstone three years ago.

ABC's New Series 'No Ordinary Family' Is Good For The Whole Family

September 23rd, 2010 11:32am EDT
Michael Chiklis No Ordinaary Family
ABC’s new fall show No Ordinary Family is aimed at the ordinary family. In the first episode, a suburban family of four obtains super powers in a plane crash. They return to their normal lives with the powers of strength, speed, mind reading and genius. Michael Chiklis plays the strong father.

“Look, the superhero element in the context of a family drama, it just lends itself where these guys [the writers and producers] can just let their imaginations run wild,” Chiklis said. “It just opens up so many different worlds that we can enter. It makes it exciting and, potentially, extremely ent...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Shutter Island,' 'The Ghost Writer,'

TRAILER TALK: THIS WEEK IN MOVIES 2/14/10
Last week I caught Steve Buscemi's dark comedy "St. John of Las Vegas" which was slightly disappointing. While the right brand of humor was there; twisted laughs and awkward moments that inspire chuckles

, I felt that the film did not have much to say.

The overarching story seemed to be building up to some kind of life altering self-realization or dramatic event taking place in Las Vegas for Buscemi's character John Alighieri. This moment never really came, and as a result the entire film seemed very anti-climactic.

Buscemi and Romany Malco make a hilarious team, as Malco's chara...

Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco & Hue Rhodes Discuss 'Saint John of Las Vegas'

January 29th, 2010 9:11am EST
Saint John of Las Vegas
"Saint John of Las Vegas," the debut film of writer/director Hue Rhodes, stars Steve Buscemi as John, a former gambling addict who escapes his messy life in Las Vegas to live out his twilight years in New Mexico

as a non-descript auto insurance claims adjustor. But when John's boss (Peter Dinklage) sends him off with a humorless fraud investigator Virgil (Romany Malco) to investigate a suspicious claim from outside Las Vegas, John is sent spiraling in an eccentric world of addiction, nude militants and burning carnival folk. Starpulse recently sat with Rhodes, Buscemi and Malco and discu...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies -'When in Rome,' 'Edge of Darkness' & More

January 25th, 2010 10:59am EST
Edge of Darkness
I took a break from the movies last week, since nothing in theaters was particularly calling out to me as worthwhile. Instead I saw a release on video I wanted to catch: the new "Family Guy" "Star Wars" parody "Something Something Something Dark Side." I found "Dark Side" to be pretty hilarious, although perhaps not quite as novel as "Blue Harvest." As a lifelong "Star Wars" fan, I've always had an appreciation for shows and movies that deftly lampoon the series.

This last week in January Kristen Bell portrays a workaholic skeptical about love in the romantic comedy "When in Rome," Me...

'Weeds' Season 5 Finale Recap

September 1st, 2009 1:58pm EDT
Weeds
In last season's finale of "Weeds," Nancy was ready to get murdered at Esteban's hands for turning him in to the FBI, but she had an ace in the hole: her pregnancy. You know, the little baby we haven't seen at all since he was born and they got a nanny. One of these days they'll skip like five years later so he can be a character again. This season's finale was both more and less dramatic, and at least one character has shown a great deal of growth and change in the past few episodes and it is taken to the logical conclusion. Forget the fact the rest of the cast is kind of the exact same.

'Weeds' Recap: One More Episode Left Of Season Five

August 25th, 2009 10:00am EDT
Weeds
Season five of "Weeds" is almost over, and I did a funny thing the other day. I re-watched season one for fun, just to see how it has changed. It was a bad idea, honestly, because all it did was make it clear that this show has gone seriously downhill since they left Agrestic. The characters are practically caricatures of themselves now, Nancy is no longer a pot dealer but a mobster wife, and the family is messed up to the point of no return. It's kind of sad to remember what made you love a show in the first place, and then see how it's gotten so far away from there. Sigh.

Anyway, last ...

'Weeds' Recap: Nancy Is Officially A Mobster's Wife

August 18th, 2009 12:27pm EDT
Weeds
So Nancy has officially become a mobster's wife on "Weeds" now, and she seems quite excited that her husband plans on going straight and becoming Governor the right way. It actually appears to be working for Esteban too, and not only are the people supporting him, but he seems blissfully happy with Nancy and his new family. He doesn't seem to know that she put out a hit on Pilar, and that she had Cesar transfer Guillermo to a Mexican prison. No one is certain if this will mean that Guillermo actually does what she asks, or if he goes after Nancy herself. She's foolish if she thinks their pr...

'Weeds' Recap: Insane Scenarios Keep Piling Up

August 11th, 2009 11:22am EDT
Weeds
It is hard to believe that only a few episodes are left in this season of "Weeds," but a lot actually has happened. There's a new Botwin brother, and everyone feels very sorry for him to be born into this insane, dysfunctional family. Nancy didn't turn up dead although she probably should have, and then managed to make Esteban love her all over again. Now she's gone and gotten her son Shane shot in the arm, which usually would convince her to get out of the danger zone and away from her drug lord boyfriend, right? Right? Sigh.

The episode starts with Nancy freaking out that Shane is blee...

'Weeds' Recap: Nancy Botwin Is The Worst Mom Ever

August 4th, 2009 12:12pm EDT
Weeds
Congratulations, Nancy Botwin, you prove yourself the worst mother in the world for another week in "Weeds." Honestly by now you would think she's as bad as she can get, but no, it keeps going. In this episode she decides to move into Andy's bedroom and share his bed, not in the happy sex way but in the 'I have a new baby and I can't sleep way.' She then encourages him to take care of the baby for her since he's a new dad and all, but everyone knows this is just until Esteban gets off his behind and does what she wants. Then Andy will lose her and his new 'son' in an instant, thus proving t...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Where The Sidewalk Ends'

July 21st, 2009 10:34am EDT
Weeds
So you know how on "Weeds" Nancy played house with Esteban for six months and started to think he probably wasn't going to kill her? Yeah, that foolish thinking is gone now. With the help of the beautiful Spanish-speaking woman last week, named Pilar, Esteban cannot marry Nancy until he follows through on his political plans. He sets up the creepiest home-birthing room, which is intentionally Rosemary's Baby-like in intentions, and Nancy realizes how much danger she truly is in now. Which is a lot. If she has the baby at home, with no birth certificate and no witnesses, it is easy for the f...

'Weeds' Recap: Show Pulls A 'Six Months Later' On Us

July 14th, 2009 10:13am EDT
Weeds
Oh no way did "Weeds" just pull a six months later on us! Ugh! That's such a television cliche, but fine, it's not like we wanted to wait through Nancy's entire disturbed pregnancy. So now she's only got a little bit left, and all of the characters have progressed ... somewhat. In a downward spiral kind of way, except for Nancy who always lands on her feet.

Nancy and Esteban are in a state of bliss now, apparently forgetting all about him wanting to kill her, and now he even wants to marry her. Although he doesn't ask her so much as tells her that they will be married. For some reason N...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Van Nuys'

July 7th, 2009 9:48am EDT
Weeds
When Andy finally calls Nancy out in this episode week's episode of "Weeds," in the gentlest way, fans had to breath a sigh of relief. That woman has to take responsibility for her own mistakes rather than shouting that the world has forced her to this place. No one forced her to be a drug dealer and to get substantially more invested in the criminal world; she does it to herself. And when Andy says that to her, and she finally admits the truth, there's a moment where you believe she could actually change if she wanted to. But this is "Weeds" so you know better than that.

After the murde...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Super Lucky Happy'

July 1st, 2009 9:46am EDT
Weeds
The results are finally in on "Weeds" and it's absolutely true: Nancy is pregnant with Esteban's bouncing baby boy. What this means is that Estebean is becoming an even creepier version of himself by sucking up to Nancy and planning a sweet little life with her and their son. Whether this is just a way to keep her calm for the baby or an actual delusion of his is unknown. Seeing him sensitive and sweet with her is too bizarre, and Nancy seems to feel the same way.

She spends yet another episode in despair and moral confusion. Agent Till shows up and gets captured by Nancy's new (awesom...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Su-Su-Sucio'

June 23rd, 2009 10:51am EDT
Weeds
Yay "Weeds" remembered it was a comedy this week! Dark humor and irony for all! If you remember, Nancy is completely screwed due to betraying her mobster boyfriend and only his baby in her womb is keeping her alive. Last week she tried to send Shane to her sister's house, but that didn't stick since the creepy youngest child tried to blackmail her with pictures of her sleeping with Andy. Jill shows up at Nancy's house with Shane in tow, and hands him back over, then grabbing Andy's hand and running up to his room. There's a lot of tension when we're not sure if Nancy is jealous or just anno...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Machetes Up Top'

Weeds
Oh Nancy, you'll never get it, will you? See the problem Nancy faces is that every drug dealer and gangster she's met so far has found her strangely amusing. They let her get away with things that no one actually ever would. So she walks around thinking whatever trouble she gets herself into she'll figure out or flirt her way through, and now she's in a situation where no one is there to save her or be seduced. Sucks to be you, Nancy Botwin.

Nancy spends most of the episode running away from Esteban's goon Cesar and trying to figure out a way to come out on top again. She's completely al...

'Weeds' Is Back With A New Season

June 9th, 2009 12:06pm EDT
Weeds
"Weeds" is back, and I'll admit I was a little skeptical about this season. Last season seemed to lose some of what made the show so special, making it more of a drama than a comedy and forgetting the tight, sharp dialogue the fans loved so much. Nancy is pregnant with her Mexican Drug Lord boyfriend's baby, which came right in time to spare her life since he found out she was snitching. Her sons are both involved in marijuana, with Silas growing it and Shane secretly selling it, and Andy came to the conclusion he might be in love with his sister-in-law. Oh, and Celia was kidnapped by her e...

'Ghostbusters 3:' A Dream Or A Reality?

March 19th, 2009 1:13pm EDT
Ghostbusters
On June 8, the Ghostbusters franchise will turn 25. Since the original film's release back in '84 the boys in gray have taken on the paranormal in a sequel, comic book titles, cartoon series, video games, and even one out-of-print novel.

Despite the franchise's popularity, the past decade hasn't been kind to the "Ghostbusters." Like the Indiana Jones and Star Wars films, whispers of an impending new installment ran the gauntlet of the internet rumor mill, bogging down the project with half-truths and unverified reports in the process. This is the part where a pun about the franchise d...

Best TV Couples That Aren't Together - But Should Be

February 13th, 2009 9:00am EST
House
There are a few unifying themes that you can find in almost any television show: drama, comedy, and yes, even a touch of romance. Comedies have plenty of drama (Hello Pam/Jim drama in The Office) and drama can have moments of comedy (everything Hurley says on Lost), but they all tend to have a focus on relationships. Even Law & Order, a cut and dry procedural, has a pairing here and there.

Yet there's a rule for shows that if a couple has great chemistry and sexual tension, don't let them get them together! It'll ruin the show! This has been the case a few times, but here are a few no...
