Cannes Film Festival Raises The Profile Of Female Directors

Cannes Film Festival Raises The Profile of Female Directors
The Cannes Film Festival is halfway through its run and all eyes this year are on the females making an impact on the scene. With director Jane Campion stepping in as this year's President of the Jury for judging, there's been a call to recognize the contribution of women in the industry.

As the only female director to have won the coveted Palme d'Or for The Piano in 1993, she said at a press conference earlier this week, "I think you'd have to say [there is] inherent sexism in the industry. Thierry [Fremaux, artistic director of the festival] told us only 7% of the 1800 films submitted to...

'Shameless' 2.12 Recap: Fiona Interrupted

April 2nd, 2012 11:45am EDT
CBS Corporation
Every time I think I've about had it with "Shameless," it shows up with a bag of surprises and I'm hooked again. It's the show I just can't quit, thanks in large part to the fearless maiden at its center: Fiona Gallagher, played by the too good to be true Emmy Rossum. She wrangles her siblings through the pratfalls of adolescence and rarely finds time for herself. And while the second season has been a real test of faith for both Fiona and the audience, last night's finale proved that the heart of "Shameless" is the true anchor in the sea of chaos that threatens to drown it every so often. ...

'Shameless' Recap: 'Father's Day'

February 6th, 2012 12:33pm EST
CBS
Shameless isn't a perennial feel-good Sunday night doozy, like the typical start-of-the-week programs that occupy that particular corner of television airwaves. And yet it's disguised as one, what with its upbeat intro, yellow-hued color scheme and boisterous clan of characters. At its chore, Shameless is a sad drama about a poverty-stricken family and their woes of addiction. But what separates Shameless from run-of-the-mill melodrama is the fierce will of each member of the Gallagher family. There's no time to be sad about their absent mother or drunkenly abrasive father, Frank (William H...

Best Movies Set In Cold Locations

Often times, weather plays an integral role in films, whether it be that it helps to set the tone, has symbolic significance, or makes a kissing scene all the more steamy, like the passionate lip-lock between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in "The Notebook" (2004), whose sexiness skyrocketed thanks to it taking place during a downpour. Sometimes the weather even takes on a life of its own, like in the film "Twister" (1996), in which the tornado acts as just as much of a protagonist as both Helen Hunt's and Bill Paxton's characters.

So now, with winter officially getting its frosty self...
