Born on June 25, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA, Lumet was raised in an entertainment family in New York, NY; his mother and father were both veterans of the Yiddish stage. Starting off as an actor, Lumet made his debut on radio at age four, then a year later began appearing onstage at the Yiddish Art Theater on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. For two years during the Great Depression, he performed in "The Rabbi From Brownville," a serial on Yiddish radio written and directed by his father and starring both parents in multiple roles.
