Richard LewisLive From Hell Release Date: 2000 11 14 Label: Grapeshot Records Rating: ![]() |
The first disc of this two-CD set is the soundtrack to the comedian's 1985 HBO special, I'm in Pain. Available on CD for the first time, the performance captures the neurotic comedian at his nervous best. Only Lewis could make paranoia and guilt sound so funny. Family, intimacy, and everyday life seem to be more than the comedian can bear, leaving him no response but to lash back at the world with pointed one-liners and hilarious observations. The second disc of the set is an extended interview conducted by magazine journalist Bill Zehme in 2000. Intimacy is a recurring topic, but Lewis also delves into politics, life as a comedian, and his battles with alcohol. The improvisational quality of the interview's give and take makes it an interesting and often riotous listen, with Lewis suddenly riffing on whatever subject lights his imagination. Not lost on him is the irony of a Jewish neurotic with hypochondriac-like leanings being interviewed in a radio studio owned by Christian Scientists, a religious group that doesn't believe in the use of medicine. A decade and a half after making it big-time as a standup comedian with his first cable special, Lewis sounds as weird, wired, and witty as ever. Brian Beatty, All Music Guide
