Jack Lemmon arrived in Hollywood with a contract with Columbia Pictures. His two most famous movies of his early career were however on Loanout to Warners for "Mr. Roberts" and to United Artists where he began a great relationship with Billy Wilder with the now iconic "Some Like It Hot". Great hit movies with Wilder followed: "Irma La Douce," "The Apartment" and "The Fortune Cookie" and with other Directors such fine films as "Missing" "China Syndrome" "Save The Tiger" made Lemmon one of the movies greastest stars. Lemmon's company Jalem produced Paul Newman's "Cool Hand Luke". Leading Man to great beauties such as Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Sophia Loren, Kim Novak, Judy Holliday, Doris Day, Natalie Wood, Ann Margret, Jane Fonda, and others Lemmon created an "Everyman" image that saw his career last for nearly 50 years. A two time Oscar winner, he was one of the biggest stars of his era. Gregory Peck once referred to him as "The American Olivier". Jack Lemmon was a close acting friend to Walter Matthau. I feel his greatest performance was in Warners Bros. "Days Of Wine And Roses" which got him a nomination but he lost that year to Gregory Peck in "To Kill A Mockingbird" Lemmon is buried in Westwood Villge cemetery near his two best friends Billy Wilder and Walther Matthau with two of his famous leading ladies also interred nearby Natalie Wood, and the most famous of all stars Marilyn Monroe. | ||
