Spike Lee Sparks Film Fight With Tyler Perry
Outspoken movie maker Spike Lee has picked a new film fight with actor/director Tyler Perry after suggesting the Madea Goes To Jail star's hit films are a step backwards for African-Americans.
The Do The Right Thing director accuses Perry of "coonery and buffoonery" in his films - comments the younger filmmaker has taken exception to.
In a taped interview for 60 Minutes, Perry says, "That p**ses me off. It really does - because it's so insulting. It's attitudes like that that make Hollywood think that these people (his characters) do not exist and that's why there's no material spea...

Woody Allen, Larry David, Evan Rachel Wood & Others Discuss 'Whatever Works'
Woody Allen, Larry David, Patricia Clarkson and Evan Rachel Wood sat down to discuss their new film, "Whatever Works," in theaters June 19. I asked Woody if any changes were made to the script -- a script he wrote in the 1970's -- with the casting of Larry David and asked Larry if he ever felt too much "Larry David" was ever coming out in his performance. Also discussed is their love -- or in Larry David's case, disdain, -- for New York and the slim possibilities that a Woody Allen film will ever be adapted for Broadway.

Spike Lee Movie Upsets Italians
Spike Lee's World War II movie Miracle At St. Anna has provoked a storm of controversy in Italy, because it links an anti-Fascist resistance group to the Nazi killing of 560 civilians.
Lee and writer James McBride held a press conference in Rome on Monday where they were bombarded with questions about their portrayal of the slaughter - which took place in a Tuscan Village in 1944.
In the movie, a member of the partisan resistance group collaborates with the Nazis, prompting the killings. Veteran partisan organizations are unhappy, fearing the movie will prompt a backlash against...

Race Matters: Is Hollywood Truly Color Blind When It Comes To On-Screen Romance?
In John Grisham's bestselling novel "The Pelican Brief," investigative journalist Gray Grantham and law student Darby Shaw uncover a political conspiracy and in the process, end up between the sheets. In the 1993 film version, Darby Shaw (played by Julia Roberts) and Grantham merely share a chaste hug in the film's conclusion. What happened between page and screen? One theory: In the novel Grantham is white; in the film, he's portrayed by Academy-Award winning - and black - actor Denzel Washington.

Spike Lee's Grueling Shoot Left Actor In Hospital
Spike Lee forced the cast of his war movie Miracle At St. Anna to suffer so much on set, one actor ended up in the hospital. The movie was shot over a wet and cold Italian winter, after actors had been subjected to a grueling and demeaning boot camp, intended to recreate World War II conditions.
And a combination of Lee's demands, bad eating and the conditions left The Wire actor Michael K. Williams in hospital.
He tells WENN, "My character has a nervous breakdown in the field, and to sustain that constant state of agitation for that many hours it kind of got to me. I had that jet...

Spike Lee's 'School Daze' Sequel With Kanye West Put On Hold
Moviemaker Spike Lee's plans of turning Kanye West into a film star have hit a snag - no one wants to fund the film.
The director has penned what he thinks is "a very good script" for the sequel of his 1988 movie School Daze - and he wants West to star in the film with Alicia Keys.
But no one likes the idea. He says, "The film takes place at the same college but 25 years later, but the powers that be didn't want to tell that story. It was gonna have Kanye in it and Alicia Keys."
The original School Daze starred Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito and Tisha Campbell-Martin....

Spike Lee's Best & Not-So-Best Films
It's difficult to rank the films of Spike Lee in order of best to worst because, quite frankly, the auteur hasn't really made a horrible film. With nearly 20 feature films under his belt and more to come (his upcoming WWII film looks promising) Lee has of course put out his share of minor works, but even the projects that failed still had enough of the director's signature characteristics-fascinating characters, intriguing dialogue, and race relation undertones-and ultimately are merely cinematic experiments gone wrong. Consider this a list of best and minor works of one of America's finest...
