Born Sidney Liebowitz in Brooklyn, NY on July 8, 1935, Steve Lawrence was the son of house painter Max Liebowitz and his wife, Anna. Lawrence's father was also a cantor, which provided his son with some of his first opportunities to sing before an audience at synagogue.
