Burt Lancaster a great movie star and a superb actor was also one of the leading Independent Film Producers of his era. A star who took chances on controversial topics, one of his greatest performances was as "The Birdman of Alcatraz" produced by his company Hecht Hill Lancaster. A superb athlete with a great charismatic personality, Lancaster was a superb example of rugged masculine Americana. Lancaster starred in Stanley Kramer's all star producion of 'Judgement of Nuremberg' taking second billing to Spencer Tracy. (Max Schell won an Oscar in that movie) Other great Lancaster hits were "The Crimson Pirate" "Sweet Smell of Success" "Separate Tables". Lancaster won his only Oscar for Richard Brooks' "Elmer Gantry" with Jean Simmons and Shirley Jones ( in her Oscar winning performance). In his long and great career Lancaster worked with a number of Hollywood greats such as Spencer Tracy, Barbara Stanwyck, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Richard Widmark, Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, and his close friend and often co star Kirk Douglas. With Deoborah Kerr he created one of the greatest and most erotic love scenes in movie History in Fred Zinneman's "From Here To Eternity". Lancaster also worked with fine Directors such as Robert ALdrich and Richard Brooks in addtion to Stanley Kramer. A Man who did not take the easy road on anything, his controbutions to Hollywood are significant. | ||
