The Television Balcony - 'The Presence'

10/14/2011 5:10pm EDT
The Presence
Shane West's choice of projects is really giving me mixed signals. First I wanted to hug him in Once & Again. That was before I realized he could inflict serious bodily harm thanks to Nikita. Now, with The Presence - which I stupidly made the mistake of watching in the middle of the night - he has scared the bejesus out of me, and I mean that as a compliment.

In the psychological thriller - to call it a horror movie would be inaccurate - he plays a spirit haunting a remote cabin (aren't they all remote?). And he's downright unsettling at points and heartbreaking at others. There wer...

DVD Review: 'The Presence'

10/5/2011 11:14am EDT
The Presence
An isolated cabin. No electricity. Light by single candle. And Mira Sorvino. It sounds like a beautiful dream I had the other night, but it’s actually a new ghost story out on DVD this week from Lionsgate called “The Presence”. Light is shed below!

Title: "The Presence"

Grade: 2 1/2

Cast: Mira Sorvino, Justin Kirk, Shane West

Director: Tom Provost

Rating: PG-13

Runtime: 87 minutes

Release Company: Lionsgate

The Flick: "The Presence" definitely has its creepy heart in the right place, but all the elements just don’t come together in ...

'Weeds' Recap - 'Theoretical Love Is Not Dead'

11/23/2010 6:10pm EST
Wow, now that was a season finale. 'Weeds' always does manage to come out swinging by the end. First season it was her finding out Peter was DEA, second was the mexican stand off with all the dealers, third was Agrestic burning down, fourth was 'I'm pregnant,' fifth was Shane the murderer, and now the sixth has Nancy giving in to fate. Nice. It has been rumored that season seven will likely be the end of the show, and it seems likely she might be heading toward her inevitable death. Each year Nancy's climbed closer and closer to the edge, and it's only a matter of time before someone pushes...

'Weeds' Recap - 'Fran Tarkenton'

11/9/2010 3:58pm EST
Wow. Every season 'Weeds' manages to take me by surprise, and I never know where it is going by the season finale. This is rare since a lot of television can be figured out early. Next week is the season finale, so everything in this episode is preparing for that. And it looks like big changes might be coming. Let's get the least important thing out of the way: Doug goes home and his wife is re-married and he wants her back now. Why is he on this show? He serves no real purpose other than being annoying, and if they want comic relief, Andy is far more amusing than Doug will ever be. Cut the...

'Weeds' Recap - 'Viking Pride'

11/5/2010 11:22am EDT
Nancy's in a good mood again, because she has a plan: Coppenhagen. The hash is being sold now that they have their highly illegal and untested liquid drug, and they may have found a way to get passports out of there. The bartender she traded the drugs with knows someone who might be able to help, but Andy has to go and do it since he doesn't respect women. Everyone forgets that Nancy has bigger cajones than Andy, apparently. But it gives her time to follow her gut about that man she met last week. She has a feeling that he was not who he said he was, so she goes around asking people if they...

'Weeds' Recap - 'Dearborn-Again'

10/27/2010 2:34pm EDT
Oh Nancy, Nancy, Nancy. You drive all the men wild. It would usually be annoying to have a character that every man falls desperately in love with, but it makes sense with Nancy. Not only is Mary Louise-Parker absolutely beautiful, but there is this charismatic enticing vibe around Nancy. It's why she works as a main character and why all the fans have stuck with the show this long. We love her or we love to hate her, but there is something about Nancy Botwin. Obviously the men in her world agree.

The episode starts out with her visiting the teacher from high school that she seduced and he...

'Weeds' Recap - 'To Moscow, And Quickly'

10/19/2010 3:26pm EDT
Price sister
Nancy's sister is the one being interviewed this time about their childhood. We haven't seen that much about Nancy Botwin and how she came to be the crazy woman she is today. In the first season there was an impression that she was very normal before Judah died suddenly, but the writers are unraveling the truth. Judah just kept the crazy at bay. Anyway last week the family tried to settle in a trailer park, and Nancy got them in trouble by having dirty violent sex with a married bartender. As a fan of Saved by the Bell, I will be traumatized forever seeing Zack Morris mostly naked. So now t...

'Weeds' Recap - 'Pinwheels And Whirligigs'

10/6/2010 8:15am EDT
The cast of Weeds
Andy Botwin has a problem, and that is he doesn't seem to understand that Nancy will do whatever she feels like. Even if she swears up and down 'I will listen to you,' the second she is bored she will just do what she wants. After royally messing up their time in Seattle, Nancy agrees to give the power reins over to Andy, because he actually knows how to live off the grid and keep away from people. He gives probably excellent advice on how to do that, but it lasts about ten seconds before Nancy gets the idea to bring the family to a carnival. Because she's like that. No honestly, the truth ...

'Weeds' Recap - 'A Shoe For A Shoe'

9/28/2010 3:33pm EDT
There was a pretty intense cliffhanger in the last episode of Weeds, and unfortunately several of the problems wrap up very fast. The CPS looking for Stevie are shooed off when Silas comes in and starts being offensive in sign language, and Nancy puts her fellow maid in a head lock until she just runs off. This probably needs to happen quickly because the real thing to worry about is Shane being taken. Cesar says he will trade Shane for Stevie, and for Nancy to start driving and they'll meet up somewhere. She packs the family into the car and comes up with a plan. Silas brings up a point th...

'Weeds' Recap - 'Boomerang'

9/21/2010 3:12pm EDT
It's a little reassuring that when crazy stuff really starts to go down, the first thing Nancy tries to do is save her sons. Of course neither of them would be in this situation if it wasn't for her, so that takes down the sweet motherly urges, but the intention is nice at least. All sorts of bad things converge at once on Nancy, and a lot quicker than anticipated! She's surrounded again, and how is she going to use her pretty brown eyes to get out of this one?

Last week ended with the police confronting Andy and Nancy coming out of the pot dealer's house. They actually have caught the van...

'Weeds' Recap - 'Thwack'

8/19/2010 1:40pm EDT
Is everyone ready to go back to the wild world of the worst mother in the world and her increasingly sociopathic children? Yay! Weeds has returned after a stunning season finale last year, and Nancy Botwin is in fine form as always. Meaning she's still a drug dealer, still married to a mobster, and drunk most of the time because she fails as a mother in every possible way. We're back watching the train wreck, people, and it's more insane than it's been in a long time, and that's saying a great deal.

Last season ended with the powerful Pilar threatening Nancy and her two elder sons if she d...

'Weeds' Season 5 Finale Recap

9/1/2009 1:58pm EDT
In last season's finale of "Weeds," Nancy was ready to get murdered at Esteban's hands for turning him in to the FBI, but she had an ace in the hole: her pregnancy. You know, the little baby we haven't seen at all since he was born and they got a nanny. One of these days they'll skip like five years later so he can be a character again. This season's finale was both more and less dramatic, and at least one character has shown a great deal of growth and change in the past few episodes and it is taken to the logical conclusion. Forget the fact the rest of the cast is kind of the exact same.

'Weeds' Recap: One More Episode Left Of Season Five

8/25/2009 10:00am EDT
Season five of "Weeds" is almost over, and I did a funny thing the other day. I re-watched season one for fun, just to see how it has changed. It was a bad idea, honestly, because all it did was make it clear that this show has gone seriously downhill since they left Agrestic. The characters are practically caricatures of themselves now, Nancy is no longer a pot dealer but a mobster wife, and the family is messed up to the point of no return. It's kind of sad to remember what made you love a show in the first place, and then see how it's gotten so far away from there. Sigh.

Anyway, last ...

'Weeds' Recap: Nancy Is Officially A Mobster's Wife

8/18/2009 12:27pm EDT
So Nancy has officially become a mobster's wife on "Weeds" now, and she seems quite excited that her husband plans on going straight and becoming Governor the right way. It actually appears to be working for Esteban too, and not only are the people supporting him, but he seems blissfully happy with Nancy and his new family. He doesn't seem to know that she put out a hit on Pilar, and that she had Cesar transfer Guillermo to a Mexican prison. No one is certain if this will mean that Guillermo actually does what she asks, or if he goes after Nancy herself. She's foolish if she thinks their pr...

'Weeds' Recap: Insane Scenarios Keep Piling Up

8/11/2009 11:22am EDT
It is hard to believe that only a few episodes are left in this season of "Weeds," but a lot actually has happened. There's a new Botwin brother, and everyone feels very sorry for him to be born into this insane, dysfunctional family. Nancy didn't turn up dead although she probably should have, and then managed to make Esteban love her all over again. Now she's gone and gotten her son Shane shot in the arm, which usually would convince her to get out of the danger zone and away from her drug lord boyfriend, right? Right? Sigh.

The episode starts with Nancy freaking out that Shane is blee...

'Weeds' Recap: Nancy Botwin Is The Worst Mom Ever

8/4/2009 12:12pm EDT
Congratulations, Nancy Botwin, you prove yourself the worst mother in the world for another week in "Weeds." Honestly by now you would think she's as bad as she can get, but no, it keeps going. In this episode she decides to move into Andy's bedroom and share his bed, not in the happy sex way but in the 'I have a new baby and I can't sleep way.' She then encourages him to take care of the baby for her since he's a new dad and all, but everyone knows this is just until Esteban gets off his behind and does what she wants. Then Andy will lose her and his new 'son' in an instant, thus proving t...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Where The Sidewalk Ends'

7/21/2009 10:34am EDT
So you know how on "Weeds" Nancy played house with Esteban for six months and started to think he probably wasn't going to kill her? Yeah, that foolish thinking is gone now. With the help of the beautiful Spanish-speaking woman last week, named Pilar, Esteban cannot marry Nancy until he follows through on his political plans. He sets up the creepiest home-birthing room, which is intentionally Rosemary's Baby-like in intentions, and Nancy realizes how much danger she truly is in now. Which is a lot. If she has the baby at home, with no birth certificate and no witnesses, it is easy for the f...

'Weeds' Recap: Show Pulls A 'Six Months Later' On Us

7/14/2009 10:13am EDT
Oh no way did "Weeds" just pull a six months later on us! Ugh! That's such a television cliche, but fine, it's not like we wanted to wait through Nancy's entire disturbed pregnancy. So now she's only got a little bit left, and all of the characters have progressed ... somewhat. In a downward spiral kind of way, except for Nancy who always lands on her feet.

Nancy and Esteban are in a state of bliss now, apparently forgetting all about him wanting to kill her, and now he even wants to marry her. Although he doesn't ask her so much as tells her that they will be married. For some reason N...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Van Nuys'

7/7/2009 9:48am EDT
When Andy finally calls Nancy out in this episode week's episode of "Weeds," in the gentlest way, fans had to breath a sigh of relief. That woman has to take responsibility for her own mistakes rather than shouting that the world has forced her to this place. No one forced her to be a drug dealer and to get substantially more invested in the criminal world; she does it to herself. And when Andy says that to her, and she finally admits the truth, there's a moment where you believe she could actually change if she wanted to. But this is "Weeds" so you know better than that.

After the murde...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Super Lucky Happy'

7/1/2009 9:46am EDT
The results are finally in on "Weeds" and it's absolutely true: Nancy is pregnant with Esteban's bouncing baby boy. What this means is that Estebean is becoming an even creepier version of himself by sucking up to Nancy and planning a sweet little life with her and their son. Whether this is just a way to keep her calm for the baby or an actual delusion of his is unknown. Seeing him sensitive and sweet with her is too bizarre, and Nancy seems to feel the same way.

She spends yet another episode in despair and moral confusion. Agent Till shows up and gets captured by Nancy's new (awesom...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Su-Su-Sucio'

6/23/2009 10:51am EDT
Yay "Weeds" remembered it was a comedy this week! Dark humor and irony for all! If you remember, Nancy is completely screwed due to betraying her mobster boyfriend and only his baby in her womb is keeping her alive. Last week she tried to send Shane to her sister's house, but that didn't stick since the creepy youngest child tried to blackmail her with pictures of her sleeping with Andy. Jill shows up at Nancy's house with Shane in tow, and hands him back over, then grabbing Andy's hand and running up to his room. There's a lot of tension when we're not sure if Nancy is jealous or just anno...

'Weeds' Recap: 'Machetes Up Top'

6/16/2009 11:19am EDT
Oh Nancy, you'll never get it, will you? See the problem Nancy faces is that every drug dealer and gangster she's met so far has found her strangely amusing. They let her get away with things that no one actually ever would. So she walks around thinking whatever trouble she gets herself into she'll figure out or flirt her way through, and now she's in a situation where no one is there to save her or be seduced. Sucks to be you, Nancy Botwin.

Nancy spends most of the episode running away from Esteban's goon Cesar and trying to figure out a way to come out on top again. She's completely al...

'Weeds' Is Back With A New Season

6/9/2009 12:06pm EDT
"Weeds" is back, and I'll admit I was a little skeptical about this season. Last season seemed to lose some of what made the show so special, making it more of a drama than a comedy and forgetting the tight, sharp dialogue the fans loved so much. Nancy is pregnant with her Mexican Drug Lord boyfriend's baby, which came right in time to spare her life since he found out she was snitching. Her sons are both involved in marijuana, with Silas growing it and Shane secretly selling it, and Andy came to the conclusion he might be in love with his sister-in-law. Oh, and Celia was kidnapped by her e...

Exclusive: Allie Grant From 'Weeds' Discusses The Upcoming Fifth Season

6/5/2009 9:25am EDT
Allie Grant
The fifth season of Weeds premieres on Monday, June 8. Allie Grant, who plays Celia's [Elizabeth Perkins] lesbian daughter Isabelle, joins us to discuss what to expect from the upcoming season; what it's like working with such an amazing cast; the reaction she gets when returning home to Mississippi considering the show's subject matter and answers some reader questions.

Mike: What were your thoughts on the "Weeds" script when you first read it? Obviously your character, Isabelle, is a lot different than your characters on the Disney shows.

Allie Grant: Yeah. I remember the fir...

Alanis Morissette Will Guest Star On 'Weeds'

5/13/2009 11:12am EDT
Alanis Morissette
Alternative rock star Alanis Morissette will travel to Ren-Mar for the 5th season of Showtime's drama Weeds, premiering Monday, June 8th at 10p PT/ET. The multiple Grammy-winning singer/songwriter will guest star as a no-nonsense clinic obstetrician, "Dr. Audra Kitson," who treats Nancy (Mary Louise Parker) in at least seven of the season's 13 episodes. Morissette joins Jennifer Jason Leigh as season five special guest stars.

This season on "Weeds," Nancy's (Parker) pregnancy brings security, then jeopardy and maybe the end of Esteban's (Demian Bichir) political career; Celia's return ...

Interview: Sprague Grayden Talks of New '24' Role And More

11/18/2008 10:12am EST
Sprague Grayden
Sprague Grayden is a pleasure to talk to about almost anything and everything, which it seems we did. She talked to us about her new role on Fox's "24" as well as previous shows like "Jericho," "Sons of Anarchy" and "Six Feet Under." We also discussed her love of sci-fi and Pez.

We should get this out of the way, since it is probably the first question everyone asks. Your first name is your mom's maiden name, correct? It's very cool.

Yes. Thanks!

So if you have a child, will you maybe name him/her Grayden?

Grayden is a pretty cool first name for a child but I'm going to ...

TV Stars Who Deserve Emmy Nominations On July 17, Part 2

7/15/2008 10:42am EDT
Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock
Enough drama, time to laugh! The Emmy nominations are upon us, two days away in fact, so it's time to round out our suggestions to The Academy's blue ribbon panel. In the final installment, the focus turns to comedy and the actors who make us laugh every week.

This category is far more loaded than the drama section with far fewer obvious mistakes on the ballot and a ton of strong performances from the men and the women (rather than watching the ladies struggle with substandard material from their mostly male counterparts. Yes, I will clamor for more female writers and directors every...
