The biggest and most memorable event of 1963 was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, its 50th anniversary will be marked on November 22. The civil rights movement was in full swing as Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I have a dream" speech and the Vietnam conflict had begun. Gas was 29 cents a gallon and the average cost for a new home was $12,560.

Also that year, the Beatles released their first album 'Please Please Me.' Notable films released in 1963 were The Great Escape, From Russia with Love, The Birds, Cleopatra and The Pink Panther. Popular TV shows included, The A...

February 17th, 2012 10:41am EST
Lea Thompson
Lea Thompson has her crafty cat to thank for her new movie as scheming Greg Kinnear's wife in comedy thriller "Thin Ice" because she would never have met the film's writer/director if her pet hadn't been scouring the neighborhood for food scraps.

The actress was on the hunt for a really challenging movie role when Jill Sprecher called to say she had the actress' cat.

Thompson explains, "I have a cat called Stinky Pete and he is a slut. He goes to everybody's house and pretends he's got no house and he's hungry.

"My neighbour, Jill Sprecher, called me up and said, 'We have your cat'. We w...

Last week I got to see three of the films coming out: “Safe House,” “The Vow,” and “Rampart.” I didn’t absolutely love any of them, but the one I found most enjoyable was “Safe House.” If you haven’t read my thoughts already, check out my review. I haven’t had a chance to write up ones for the others yet, so keep a look out for those later this week.

Arriving in theaters this week are the unnecessary Nicolas Cage sequel “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” the romantic spy comedy “This Means War,” the inspirational documentary “Undefeated,” the anime adventure “The Secret World of Arrie...

Drive
Faithful readers, I apologize that we didn’t have a Trailer Talk column last week. I just moved into a wonderful new apartment and got pretty wrapped up in the packing/unpacking process. Now that I’m settled though, we’re back to business as usual.

I watched Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” last week, which I really enjoyed. It’s an infectious whodunit with fantastic casting, eerie electronic music that effectively builds tension, and solid character development. My Grade: A

Last week I took a break from the theater while I was on vacation, so I didn’t catch anything new. However I did watch the Nick Cassavetes crime drama “Alpha Dog.”

“Alpha Dog” squanders a talented cast of young actors including Anton Yelchin, Justin Timberlake, Emile Hirsch, Olivia Wilde, and Ben Foster with poorly developed character relationships and atrociously written dialogue.

Cassavetes throws in lots of curses to make the young punks seem like hard asses, but instead it makes them seem like ridiculous caricatures of the supposed real life people they’re based on. The only believ...

Katie Holmes was "shocked" when bosses at The History Channel axed her The Kennedys miniseries from the network and she deliberately "stayed out" of the subsequent dispute over the project.

The actress plays Jackie Kennedy in the show opposite Greg Kinnear as her onscreen husband, assassinated President John F. Kennedy. The series hit headlines back in January when TV bosses scrapped The Kennedys from their broadcast schedule, citing it as "not a fit for the History brand."

Subsequent reports suggested it was axed following pressure from surviving members of the clan, including Robert F...

Movie star Greg Kinnear has responded to remarks made by politician Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. suggesting the TV adaptation of his family's story, which features the actor, was historically inaccurate.

Executives at The History Channel have scrapped plans to air the project, in which Kinnear plays assassinated John F. Kennedy, claiming the finished product wasn't a "fit" for the network.

Producers are now scrambling to find a home for the series, and Kinnear insists he's proud of the project.

He tells Access Hollywood, "It's unfortunate.

"We had an extraordinary, great group behind the show...

Attack Of The Comic Book Movies

Watchmen
Bringing comic book heroes (and villains) to the big screen has meant big bucks for movie studios in recent years. With huge budgets and state of the art special effects, it's easier than ever for filmmakers to convincingly create the fantasy worlds that classic comic characters inhabit, both delighting die-hard "geeks," and captivating folks who've never picked up a comic book in their lives.

Comic book films have always been popular, dating back to the movie serials of the 1940s featuring Superman, Batman, and Flash Gordon, just to name a few. Christopher Reeve's "Superman" in 1978...

The Underrated Greg Kinnear

October 27th, 2008 12:34pm EDT
Greg Kinnear
He's that guy in decently funded movies you can't remember. The writing is always good to great, and you're not angry for watching one of his movies instead of The Shawshank Redemption (seriously, when is that NOT on TV?) or asking for your money back outside the theater. His work may not be critically underrated, but he's not a rock solid A-lister just either. With actors like William H. Macy and Tom Hanks out there, getting recognition for expanding on his most likeable qualities might be difficult. He may continue to slip by under the fickle radar of celebrity for a little longer.
