Jackson DeForest Kelley was born on Jan. 20, 1920 in Atlanta, GA to parents Clora and Ernest David Kelley, a Baptist Minister. A talented singer from an early age, DeForest, as he was known, performed regularly with the local church choir while attending Decatur Boys High in nearby Decatur. He began his entertainment career singing on an Atlanta area radio station and later performed on the stage at the Paramount Theater with Lew Forbes and his orchestra.
