So begins the fable of The Monkey People, narrated by Raul Julia and with a jazz-pop, Tropicalia-tinged score from Lee Ritenour. It tells the story of a village in the Amazon rainforest with an enormous laziness problem. When a kindly old leaf cutter arrives with the ability to fashion friendly monkeys from tree leaves, it seems a boon for the lazybones villagers. Of course, even with the ability to make friendly monkey helpers for even the tiniest whim (at one point, a villager requests a monkey that will lay in his hammock for him, since his back gets sore when he himself lies there), the villagers can't stop complaining, since they've grown used to their shiftlessness. But one small boy sees a way out and is soon on his way to a happy, productive life. Monkey People is narrated wonderfully by the late Julia, and Ritenour's lighthearted accompaniment moves things along with colorful acoustic guitar licks, South American percussion, and a host of sound effects. [After the first track tells the story with the music, the nine music tracks repeat separately.] Johnny Loftus, Rovi |
