11 Controversial Comic Book Movie Castings

March 19th, 2014 1:01pm EDT
Idris Elba
As a comic book nerd, nothing is worse than seeing a poor attempt at a movie adaptation of one of your beloved super heroes. So one could understand why so many casting decisions in comic book films create a controversy. Here are 11 controversial comic book movie castings:

Idris Elba - Heimdall in Thor. In what will be an occurring theme in this list, Elba's casting as Asgard Sentry Heimdall was a controversy only because of the color of this skin. Several white supremacist groups employ Norse mythology, so the perceived slight was twofold for them. In the end, the boycott attempts failed ...

Hollywood's Hottest Shirtless Men

Hollywood's Hottest Shirtless Men
Usually it's the women who are objectified in Hollywood, but the men are fair game too! These guys are hard working actors, singers, and athletes who either take time to work out for their six-pack abs or just let nature take its course.

Professional dancers Val and Maskim Chmerkovskiy (pictured above) make sure they're in good shape for "Dancing With The Stars." The two brothers, who were born in the Ukraine, obviously work hard for their physiques.

Some male stars spend a lot of time bulking up at the gym, while others are slim and trim. Check out our gallery of seriously shirtless cele...

October 31st, 2013 3:03pm EDT
Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal missed out on the role of a lifetime - because he didn't know he needed a British accent.

The Hollywood Reporter held its annual actors roundtable with Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto, Josh Brolin and Michael B. Jordan, and it was revealed Gyllenhaal had a shot at being Frodo in the acclaimed Lord of the Rings trilogy until he gave "literally one of the worst auditions."

The interviewer asked, "What's the strangest audition you have had?" Josh Brolin recalled a Fly 2 audition in which he writhed on the ground and frothed at the mouth (his ...

Michael B. Jordan Calls 'Fruitvale Station' A Timely Movie

July 25th, 2013 11:57am EDT
Fruitvale Station
New race drama "Fruitvale Station" couldn't have been released at a more poignant time, according to lead actor Michael B. Jordan.

The film centers on a young black man from Oakland, Calif., who is killed by transit cops. The movie was released on the eve of George Zimmerman's acquittal earlier this month. Zimmerman killed black teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida in February 2012, and Americans have been divided over the court's ruling.

Jordan is pleased that his film has started the conversation about race relations. He told Access Hollywood Live, "It was eerie timing. It shows that it's...

'House' Recap: Love Is Blind

March 20th, 2012 9:34pm EDT
house 6b
This week’s episode of “House” made it seem like the regular writing staff took some time off. The story was barely existent and the obligatory medical mystery for this episode was in no way thrilling or mysterious. There aren’t many more episodes of “House” left and hopefully none of them are like this.

“Love Is Blind” (even the episode’s title is lazy) opens with a man buying an engagement ring at a jewelry store. Will (Michael B. Jordan) is blind, but appears to be quite capable at getting around by himself with only the aid of his walking stick. As he is waiting to cross the street, su...

'Parenthood': The Best Show You're Not Watching

February 28th, 2012 1:10pm EST
parenthood cast
It’s not a stretch to say that while most Americans are struggling through the current economic crisis, Hollywood is battling its own creative recession as the industry continues to sink its money into remakes of old shows, superhero franchises and classic fairytales.

This is why it’s a crime against television that NBC’s “Parenthood” is so unacceptably under-watched and underappreciated. This cape-free show follows the lives of three generations of the tight-knit, wine-loving Braverman clan. With drama that's unflinchingly genuine, the show doesn’t just tug on the heartstrings, it downr...

Two Jews' Review 'Chronicle,' Both Flying High Over This Original Superhero Sci-Fi Film

Chronicle
Two Jews on Film - By Joan Alperin Schwartz: Every so often a film surprises me, sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a not so good way.

Walking into the screening of 'Chronicle' directed by Josh Trank, I was expecting to see a movie that I've seen way too many times... teenagers get superpowers and fight evil doers.

Wow, was I happily surprised! Yes, teenagers do get superpowers it happens when they're exposed to an alien device. But, what these three boys do with their superpowers is what makes 'Chronicle' one of the most original, exciting, entertaining, and interesting films, I've s...

Review: Small Budget Superhero Flick 'Chronicle' Packs A Punch

February 2nd, 2012 12:00pm EST
Chronicle
It’s certainly easy to become fixated on the, at turns both clever and cloying, found footage device employed in Josh Trank’s "Chronicle." There are absolutely some holes and awkward, forced moments that feel like a stretch, and if you let those little inconsistencies nag at you, they will. And do. But resist that temptation, suspend disbelief just for a hot second and what you’ll find you’re left with is a complex and engaging film that grapples intelligently with the eternal struggle of good and evil, wish fulfillment, and the moral culpability of super powers discovered by teenagers.

Cast Of 'Chronicle' Q&A: Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, & Michael B. Jordan On Super Powers And Superman Pajamas

February 1st, 2012 1:00pm EST
Chronicle Cast
The adorable cast of "Chronicle" had a few minutes to chat about superpowers, and I happily took them up on it. Check out Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan and Dane DeHaan as they talk about what attracted them to the project and what superpowers they wish they had.

"Chronicle" is a story of three high school friends who stumble upon a radioactive hole in the ground. With this discovery comes telekinesis, the ability to fly, and much more. Initially the trio sets out pulling harmless pranks, but as their skills greaten, the pull toward the dark side becomes that much more enticing. Though, ...
