Born on March 29, 1943 in South Shields, Durham, England, Idle was raised by his mother, Norah, a nurse and health visitor. His father, Ernest, flew combat missions for the Royal Air Force during World War II, only to be killed in a car crash while hitchhiking on Christmas Eve 1945.
