Rock Hudson was without doubt one of the greatest stars of the 1950's and 1960's with a string of great hits at Universal. Hudson was King of the Universal Lot with hits in such films as "All That Heaven Allows" "Magnficent Obsession" both with Jane Wyman, and a great pairing with Doris Day in both "Pillow Talk" and "Lover Come Back". He was #1 at the Box Office and only had two loanouts from Universal one to WB to do George Stevens splendid "Giant" with James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor--whom he formed a life long friendship--and to Selznick International/20th Century Fox for the remake of "A Farewell to Arms" which was David Selznick's valentine to his wife Jennifer Jones. Other than those films Hudson worked solely at Universal and was a big moneymaker for that studio. Leading man to Gina Lollobrigda, Claudia Cardinale, Jean Simmons, Doris Day, Jane Wyman, et al After his movie career ebbed, Hudson nicely segued into TV with a TV series "McMillian and Wife" and also had a part in "Dynasty". Rudggedly handsome Hudson conveyed all American masculinity to movie audiences worldwide. While tawdry details of Rock Hudson's social life have become public knowledge the fact is he was widely admired in Hollywood and said not to have one detractor. Ms Day wept on the news of his Death. One of my favorite Hudson films is Guy Hamilton's "The Mirror Crack'd" which starred Hudson but other true movie Legends: Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak and Tony Curis, Angela Lansbury | ||
