The Cook photo
With a crop of both holiday fluff (see "The Sitter!") and forgettable art house fare (don't see "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy!") hitting theaters this week we thought we’d add a little five-star avant-garde experience for the couch crowd. Time for...Forgotten Friday Flick! Can there actually be a film that captures colors and visuals that scream beautiful, but is also immersed in some of the most explicit, disgusting, vile and downright jaw-drop shocking moments ever caught on celluloid? If your name is Peter Greenaway, master filmmaking craftsman, it’s not only possible, but can be foun...

Review: 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' Slow, Drawn-Out And Distinctively Drab

December 6th, 2011 4:00pm EST
Tinker photo
I’m all for films that take their time. There’s nothing quite like the bravery of a picture that dares to engage by fleshing out those quiet moments and infusing character insights that longingly linger. In his previous film "Let The Right One In," Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson wielded this delicate bravado like a master swordsman, bringing his slow and methodic style to the done-to-death tale of vampires to illicit freshness. Problem is that in his latest outing "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" the long book and material upon which the film is based and the unrushed pacing of Alfredso...

Anthony Hopkins Is Like Lecter Without The Leash In 'The Rite'

January 28th, 2011 12:24pm EST
The Rite
Ever since “The Blair Witch Project” (1999), the horror genre has been increasing its attempts at realism to create chills. This is because for today’s audiences, the more believable that the story is, the scarier watching the film can be. Some horror flicks pass on documentary shooting style, preferring to throw around the phrase “inspired by true events” to add legitimacy instead.

Mikael Håfström’s exorcism thriller “The Rite” is primary example of this trend because it is not a documentary, but it claims to be based on a true story. Since the film fails to establish credibility thou...

Farrell recently showed his tender side when he opened...
