I believe he was a real actor capable of playing different characters rather than just realistic versions of his own personality. His versatility is illustrated by the fast talking spiv in Expresso Bongo, the crude east end wide boy in The Long and The Short and The Tall, the tortured lover in Butterfield 8 and the aristocratic Travis in the Alamo. The only remote role of the above was the last and that was most suitable approach for that character. His ability to change accent to an authentic dialect whilst playing eithor a southern or northern English character was always convincing and given his own background was doubly impressive. Hits or not I remember all of his films - many of which were quite disturbing with a lasting impression.
