| Richard Harris Yard Went on Forever... Release Date: 1969 Label: Dunhill Rating: ![]() |
"MacArthur Park" off of A Tramp Shining may have been the monster hit, but The Yard Went on Forever is the stronger album. Recorded a year after the hit record, it was conceived by songwriter/producer Webb as a Harris project from the beginning, so the register is right and his singing voice now slips perfectly into each song -- the lyrics are dazzling in their cascading imagery, the music is richer and more vividly conceived and recorded, and the entire album works magnificently, juxtaposing grandeur of expression and intimacy of feeling at different moments, all most effectively. The album was also recorded and engineered better than its predecessor -- speaking of which, little bits of "MacArthur Park" occasionally sneak out in the music, rather playfully. Out of print at present, except as part of Raven Records' Australian import The Webb Sessions. Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
