January 17th, 2014 12:00pm EST
2014 Oscar Nominations
The 2014 Oscar nominations have arrived in a busy week filled with Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards and SAG Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences filled this competitive film year with quite a few snubs. Left off the Oscar list are big names like Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Oprah Winfrey and Robert Redford. Movies that seemed to be sure-things in September are nothing but a distant memory to Oscar voters like Saving Mr. Banks and Lee Daniels' The Butler. Who will come out on top? Well, it no longer seems to be handed to 12 Years a Slave because Gravity and American Hust...

The Biggest Snubs From The 2014 Oscar Nominations

January 16th, 2014 12:03pm EST
Captain Phillips
Not everyone or every movie can be nominated for an Academy Award, but that won't stop us from declared who was snubbed by the Academy this morning when the nominations were announced.

Inside Llewyn Davis: Many of today's snubs felt like it was the Academy saying, "give someone else a chance." After six Oscars and countless nominations, Joel and Ethan Coen were stricken from the record this awards season - other than cinematography and sound mixing nods. The film has an astonishing 94% on Rotten Tomatoes after over 200 critic reviews, but it did not receive one best picture nomination from...

Review: 'Saving Mr. Banks' Doesn't Need Any Saving - It's Perfect!

December 12th, 2013 8:45pm EST
Saving Mr. Banks

How a person feels about a particular film has nothing to do with whether it's good or bad; whether the critics love it or hate it or what your friends say about it. It's your own personal experience that counts. Some films just work for you and others don't. It's the same with art, music, and theatre - no matter how much you argue with someone over the merits of a certain film - it's not going to change the kind of experience you have.

That being said, I absolutely loved every second of 'Saving Mr. Banks' directed by John Lee Hancock ('The Blindside'). From the brilliant performances o...

Emma Thompson Loved Playing 'Rude' Marry Poppins Author In 'Saving Mr. Banks'

December 12th, 2013 8:20am EST
Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks
Saving Mr. Banks tells the story of the making of Mary Poppins. Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney himself and Emma Thompson plays Poppins author P.L. Travers, who fought Disney on making the film a musical and including animation. The film portrays Travers as an abrasive British curmudgeon (Travers was Australian and moved to London), and Thompson embraced her impolite side.

There are arguably no current stars as famous as Tom Hanks. The two-time Academy Award winner has starred in films that are part of everyone’s collection for decades. Perhaps then it was appropriate that our era’s biggest star played Walt Disney, one of the century’s most famous figures. Or, maybe it made it more challenging for Hanks to disappear into the character of Walt Disney in his new movie, Saving Mr. Banks.

SAG Award Nominees Named: '12 Years A Slave' Tops Nods (Full List)

December 11th, 2013 11:14am EST
12 Years a Slave
Some people were surprised by The Butler’s presence here, but I don’t see any surprises from them. Movies like Gravity and Her (which are frontrunners for a Best Picture nomination) aren’t large cast films, and wouldn’t get the Ensemble nomination over The Butler. The big surprise is Dallas Buyers Club, which is a relatively small cast, and did manage an Ensemble nomination. That could go a long way in getting DBC to a Best Picture nomination. Also, Daniel Bruhl is back in the race with a Supporting Actor nomination for Rush.

Kudos to the SAG members for nominating James Gandolfini for E...

Tom Hanks didn't use his star power to get out of jury duty on Tuesday, but his presence serving on a domestic violence case was too much for one Los Angeles prosecutor to handle, and she just had to talk to him.
