Forgotten Friday Flick - 'The Underneath'

January 20th, 2012 12:40pm EST
The Underneath photo
With the glorious "Haywire" hitting theaters today, it seemed only fitting to further shout the sweetness of Soderbergh...welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick! Yes, "sex, lies, and videotape" was game changing and "Traffic" was ever so dramatic, but there’s one film that seems to take the backburner on the Soderbergh stove, so we’re gonna turn up the heat! It’s his fourth and most savvy flick about a guy coming home to settle some old business. (And yes, sex and violence ensue!) We’re talking about the highly underrated 1995 little noir ditty..."The Underneath."

TV on DVD: 'Covert Affairs: Season 1'

June 2nd, 2011 5:00pm EDT
Covert Affairs
As USA's Covert Affairs prepares for its second season next week (June 7), Universal Studios Home Entertainment has released season one onto DVD in an eleven-episode, three-disc set. Here's my review.

The Show

Someone once described Covert Affairs to me as "Alias lite." And it does remind me of Alias, before things like time jumps and secret half-siblings. That's not a good thing, though, as I didn't like Alias. So, too, must I admit that I don't care for Covert Affairs. It's the first USA show that I'd qualify as an outright miss.

The premise of the show is thus: would-be spy Annie ...

What Can We Expect To See In Season 4 Of 'Californication'?

January 6th, 2011 10:29am EST
Californication Season 4
So, “Californication” is returning soon, and everyone’s favorite blind-in-one-eye leading man David Duchovny reprises his role as the perpetually creatively-blocked novelist Hank Moody. And I bet you real money he’s going to be having sex with people this season. Lots of sex. That he’ll feel bad about later.

Actually, that’s the entirety of “Californication.” Hank Moody has sex, feels bad about it later, then does it again. But gosh if he isn’t just so darn loveable.

I know the show is about that cycle. I know the show is supposed to be about how Hank Moody is a sex addict, and how he’s t...

Review: 'Two Jews On Film' Give Thoughts On 'Conviction' And Its All-Star Cast (Video)

October 12th, 2010 2:10pm EDT
Conviction-7-15-10-001.jpg
"Conviction" directed by Tony Goldwyn, is the incredible true story of Betty Anne Waters, an ordinary working class mother of two, who embarks on an 18 year quest to free her brother, Kenny, who's sentenced to life in prison for a murder he didn't commit. Sam Rockwell as Kenny Waters gives one of his best performances to date and Hillary Swank, as his sister, Betty Anne Waters, makes us remember why she won two Oscars. Rounding out the excellent cast is Juliette Lewis, Minnie Driver, Melissa Leo, Peter Gallagher and Clea Duvall. "Conviction" is about one woman, who not only defies the o...

'Covert Affairs' - Another Hit For USA?

July 14th, 2010 10:09am EDT
Covert Affairs
There's no denying that recently, the USA Network has been on fire in terms of new shows. 'In Plain Sight', 'Psych', 'Royal Pains', and 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent', not to mention the hit series 'Burn Notice'. It seems like the cable network has a bit of a Midas touch. Can they strike gold again, this time with 'Coyote Ugly' star Piper Perabo?

It's not an instant classic, but the pilot certainly has the potential.

During a polygraph test, we meet CIA trainee Annie Walker (Piper Perabo). I enjoyed this as an opener as we're guaranteed to meet the "real Annie", a smart, sassy, sexy spy. ...

Poplopedia: 'Covert Affairs' Is Another Hit For USA

July 12th, 2010 2:30pm EDT
USA
The first scene opens with Annie Walker – a C.I.A. newbie that is hooked up to a polygraph machine and is being grilled by an examiner who asks her questions about her career, her relationships and her sex life.

Instantly, one is inclined to believe that this is a C.I.A. driven series that has a dash of sexuality and witty dialogue weaved into it. And who best to play the lead part than Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly)?

The show is titled "Covert Affairs" and it is USA’s newest addition to their drama series roster. It’s got everything from mystery and humor to car chases and fight scenes.

A s...

Review: 'Adam' Starring Hugh Dancy And Rose Byrne

July 29th, 2009 1:29pm EDT
Adam
It's interesting, on the surface, that Fox Searchlight has released two films within two weeks of each other -- "(500) Days of Summer" and, now, "Adam" -- with the similar theme of "boy meets girl." Again, perhaps, on the surface. In reality, these films could not be more different. While "(500) Days of Summer" tugs at the emotions that everyone has felt at some point, "Adam" shows us what it's like to observe a relationship where one party does not quite even understand human emotion.

Adam (played by a pretty fantastic Hugh Dancy) has Asperger's Syndrome. A condition that's a form of Au...

Peter Gallagher Discusses 'Adam,' An Offbeat Love Story Challenged By Asperger's Syndrome

July 28th, 2009 10:49am EDT
Peter Gallagher
"Adam," is the story of an off-beat romance between Beth (Rose Byrne) and Adam (Hugh Dancy) that is challenged by his affliction with Asperger's Syndrome -- an affliction that, as Wikipedia describes, is an "autism spectrum disorder, and people with it therefore show significant difficulties in social interaction." Peter Gallagher, who plays Beth's loving but very flawed father, Marty, joins us to discuss the new film (opening in limited release July 29) and to breakdown the complexity of his character.

Mike: Hey, Peter!

Peter Gallagher: Hey, mike!

Mike: How are you doing?

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies 7/26/09 - 8/1/09

July 27th, 2009 1:56pm EDT
Funny People
The column formerly known as "This Week's Movie Buzz" has a new name: "Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies." Fear not dear readers, the structure of the article you know and love will not be changing at all.

At Starpulse, we decided to change the name because we believe "Trailer Talk" more accurately reflects the column's subject matter. The insight and advice that I provide you on a weekly basis is based primarily on my viewing of movie trailers.

I do not have a chance to see most of the films before I actually recommend them to you. That being said, I do give confirmation if I ...

What Are Your Favorite TV Bloopers?

Bloopers. We all laugh at them. Sometimes we can't help but watch closely for them. Some bloopers are harder to notice, but we still spot them. Here is a sampling of some great TV bloopers.

Gilmore Girls

During the first season viewers hear Lane (Keiko Agena) talking about her parents, but we never meet her father. In one episode, after Lane moved out, she snuck back home and into her mom's room and only her mother was sleeping in the bed.

Sean Gunn (Kirk) first appeared in the second episode as Mick who was at the Gilmore's house to install the DSL that Emily (Kelly Bishop) ord...

'The OC' Cast Says Goodbye

February 15th, 2007 12:45pm EST
The OC
Following are some quotes from The O.C. cast about the series finale. Quotes from Peter Gallagher:

“I think it will be remembered for a really vibrant first season that captured a lot of imaginations around the world and gave families a chance to watch a show together -- mothers and fathers and kids -- that they could both enjoy and the show found at least briefly a happy marriage, between comedy and drama.”

“I guess my favorite moment was the day I read the pilot script. That was very exciting. And I certainly loved singing in the second season. And you know, frankly, I have had ...
