On Thursday, I watched the reboot to the Freddy Krueger series “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” The film kept my attention however it did not blaze a new trail in the genre or introduce any compelling fresh elements to Krueger’s origin story.

It seemed the real purpose of this remake was to introduce us to the new actor playing Krueger, Jackie Earle Haley. Krueger was exclusively portrayed before by Robert Englund, which made the actor synonymous with the character. Haley is consistently creepy and perverted as Krueger like Englund. Unlike Englund though, his makeup allows him to appear mo...

Are Film Remakes Worth The Risk?

October 8th, 2009 10:37am EDT
Fame
In these tough economic times, film studios are producing more and more remakes. Though some cite the financial insecurity of the viewing public, many simply argue that there is just no originality anymore, and why take a risk on a "new" idea when you can simply bring back what has since become a cult classic?

All films can be considered risks, however, especially when "date night" at the movies takes a middle class couple's expendable income. Not one of the top 10 films at the box office this summer was a remake. Perhaps that is because these new-old movies have versions sitting on Blo...

Jackie Earle Haley On 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' Remake

August 6th, 2009 12:12pm EDT
Jackie Earle Haley
Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley is about to haunt your dreams as this generation's new Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake. Dreams have always been sensitive to him, as he recalled his own childhood nightmares.

"I don't know that it really figured into the process, but I do recall this crazy recurring dream when I was a teenager," Haley said in a press conference at Comic Con. "Maybe it started younger. I was literally in the bed that I'm sleeping in so it seems like I'm awake, but I'm obviously still sleeping. This big tarantula, six foot tall bug thing chases me dow...

Things Are Looking Grim For 'Nightmare On Elm Street' Remake

February 24th, 2009 10:33am EST
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Starpulse writer Kris King has a few choice words for Platinum Dunes, the horror production company behind the upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street remake:

Dear Platinum Dunes,

First of all, nice work on your Friday the 13th reboot/sequel/remake - you managed to make a new Jason movie that neither disregarded its roots nor shot anyone into space on a straight-to-video budget.

With the hype surrounding Jason's return to Crystal Lake dissipating, news about your next bank run remake is pouring in. Having tackled Leatherface, 112 Ocean Avenue, and whatever the bad guy's name wa...

Will Robert De Niro Play Freddy Krueger?

February 2nd, 2009 1:37pm EST
Robert De Niro
(Starpulse in Hollywood): Every week, Hollywood's biggest stars are meeting in the hot spots of Beverly Hills, and Starpulse is there. The old joke is that every horror movie has infinite sequels, none more than Friday the 13th (there are 11 if you count Freddy vs. Jason!) Now the not-so-funny truth is that they're all being remade again.

After new versions of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and next week's "Friday the 13th" ramped up, with a new Child's Play still in the works, it was only a matter of time before A Nightmare on Elm Street joined the club.

Brad Fuller, who pro...

A Salute To The Head Explosion

September 23rd, 2008 11:40am EDT
Deadly Friend
When it comes to body parts that can explode, your head is ripe for the picking. Not only is it large and filled with goo, it perches atop of your shoulders begging for something to come along and smash it. Movie makers have known this fact for a long time. Nothing quite gets an audience going like a well placed exploding head. David Cronenberg's Scanners probably has the most oft-referenced scene, as it's one of the few mainstream horror films to give us a detailed and goopy exploding melon. Belloq's fate in Raiders of the Lost Ark even goes to show that Oscar winning directors aren't abov...

'Zombie Strippers' An Intentionally Killer 'B' Movie That Loves The Skin It's In

April 18th, 2008 12:13pm EDT
Zombie Strippers
(HollywoodChicago.com) - As the title implies, "Zombie Strippers" has everything and more. How many films about strippers who are zombies also quote the bible and Friedrich Nietzsche? This film is loads of fun because it has loads of everything.

Like nudity? Like bodily gore? Like sly political and military commentary? Love Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund? Yeah, it’s all in "Zombie Strippers".

The film begins in a shadowy lab corporation where an experiment has gone awry. In the not-too-distant future, the fourth term of the Bush administration (certainly the scariest concept in t...

TV Classics We'd Like To See On the Silver Screen

Airwolf
Hoping to exploit rabid fans of a long-lost cult classic? Feeling the need to pump some more revenue out of a long-dead television juggernaut? Fresh out of any and all original film ideas? Look no further!

Film adaptations of former (and occasionally current) TV series have been popular for years - and why not? It makes perfect sense to create a film adaptation of a beloved series. They each have a built-in fan base just waiting to be exploited.

These films usually vary widely. They can be a continuation of the narrative established in the series or they can keep the con...
