5 Reasons '12 Years A Slave' Deserved To Win Best Picture

March 3rd, 2014 4:30pm EST
5 Reasons '12 Years A Slave' Deserved To Win Best Picture
With 9 masterful films competing for Hollywood’s top prize, it was still uncertain at the beginning of this past Sunday’s Oscar’s ceremony which would come out on top. Countless great films have been snubbed in the past in favor of their inadequate counterparts, and it seemed that controversy was always rearing its ugly head in this year’s competition. But despite the hurdles in its way, no injustice was made when Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave was awarded the Best Picture statuette. Sure, the other films were top notch, but only “12 Years a Slave” transcended good moviemaking into a bona...

Oscar Predictions: Does 'Gravity' Carry Enough Weight?

Oscar Predictions: Does 'Gravity' Carry Enough Weight?
For the most part, the major categories at the Oscars are fairly easy to predict. But some years there are upset winners (‘Shakespeare in Love,’ Marcia Gay Harden, Juliette Binoche, Adrien Brody, to name a few) that remind us that anything can happen.

This year is a little different. Who remembers a year where the race for Best Picture is down to three films, two of which are so close that they tied at the Producers’ Guild? It seems like there are some definite locks this year (Hello, Cate Blanchett) but you read it here: Nothing is guaranteed. Nothing.

That said, here are the most likely...

I am very happy for this particular acting "best of" list this year, mostly because notable films that didn’t make it to my Top Ten still had some memorable performances.  So even though movies like "American Hustle," "12 Years A Slave" and "Frances Ha" didn’t make the final film cut, the acting work within is lovingly highlighted here.  From oddballs to slaves, sassy ice cream truck workers to sexy hustlers here are my..."Best of 2013 - Top Five Male & Female Performances."

12 Years a Slave
The film distribution company handling the Italian release of 12 Years a Slave has apologized for changing the artwork on the movie poster from black British star Chiwetel Ejiofor to his two white co-stars, Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender.

BiM Distruzione has issued a public apology for replacing the film's official one-sheet poster to an unofficial and unauthorized version that many have called a racist move.

SAG Award Nominees Named: '12 Years A Slave' Tops Nods (Full List)

December 11th, 2013 11:14am EST
12 Years a Slave
Some people were surprised by The Butler’s presence here, but I don’t see any surprises from them. Movies like Gravity and Her (which are frontrunners for a Best Picture nomination) aren’t large cast films, and wouldn’t get the Ensemble nomination over The Butler. The big surprise is Dallas Buyers Club, which is a relatively small cast, and did manage an Ensemble nomination. That could go a long way in getting DBC to a Best Picture nomination. Also, Daniel Bruhl is back in the race with a Supporting Actor nomination for Rush.

Kudos to the SAG members for nominating James Gandolfini for E...

Brad Pitt Gives Praise To His '12 Years A Slave' Co-Stars

October 17th, 2013 9:35am EDT
12 Years A Slave
"12 Years A Slave" star Brad Pitt has nothing but good things to say about his co-stars Michael Fassbender, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong'o, who had "demanding" roles in the film.

Pitt, who makes a brief appearnce in the movie, produced the film, which centers on a free black man from New York who is kidnapped and sold into slavery.

Although he's the biggest star in the critically acclaimed film, Pitt says his cast members deserve most of the credit.

He explained on the "Today" show: "I'm there to support the story. The main performances are Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong'o, Fassbend...

2008 Tribeca Film Festival Spotlight: Redbelt

A few months ago, a rock 'em, sock 'em film called "Never Back Down" was released and broke the mold of fighter movies by becoming the first in a probable long line of box office productions featuring the fighting style of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Now comes "Redbelt",

a film that prides itself more on the characters internal conflicts more so than the external ones.

How the heck to do you make a fighting movie in which the fighting itself is secondary? By using a complicated plot, of course. We have Mike Terry (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a MMA instructor who teaches his stude...

Starpulse Movie Critic Calls 'American Gangster' A 'Success'

November 1st, 2007 2:23pm EDT
American Gangster
American Gangster director Ridley Scott may have two heavy hitters cast in a film that's based on a heart pounding true story, but it also succeeds in closely following, in some cases adding to, an already winning formula that was most recently seen in Martin Scorsesee's The Departed.

In lieu of the plotline, which is long and winding, take a look at the outline:

Step one: Get a bad guy. Then dress him up like you would the hero. Make him violent and powerful, but hard working, rich, and charming. For good measure, show him to us before you show us anybody else. We'll automaticall...
