Johnny Depp has turned his back on alcohol after declaring, "I pretty much got everything I could get out of it".

The movie star, who played hard-drinking pirate Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, insists he has been sober and alcohol-free for 18 months after years of enjoying fine wines and spirits.

He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I investigated wine and spirits thoroughly, and they certainly investigated me as well, and we found out that we got along beautifully, but maybe too well.

The producers of Johnny Depp's upcoming Western The Lone Ranger are donating proceeds from the film's Los Angeles premiere to the American Indian College Fund (AICF).

A scientist has named a fossil after Johnny Depp after he saw a resemblance to Edward Scissorhands.

David Legg, a british scientist from Imperial College London, discovered a 505 million-year-old fossil that appears to have been an ancestor of lobster and scorpions. The fossil had large, scissor-like claws.

Legg thought the claws looked like the titular character in Edward Scissorhands, and decided to name it Kooteninchela deppi after the movie's star.

Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal are reportedly in talks to join Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep in the movie adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award-winning musical Into The Woods.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two actors will make their onscreen singing debuts if they sign on to play fairytale princes in the project.

The film, which will feature new Sondheim songs, will be shot in London this autumn (13).
