Mel Gibson is set to star in the sequel to Robert Rodriguez's violent 2010 action film Machete, according to a report.

The Lethal Weapon actor is in advanced talks to play a supporting role in Machete Kills, reports Deadline.com.

If Gibson does sign on, he won't be the only big movie star to make a cameo appearance in the action film, which stars Danny Trejo as the tough titular character.

Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken are set to reunite onscreen for the first time since their Oscar-winning turn in The Deer Hunter to play pensioners at a stag party.

Fellow Hollywood veteran Michael Douglas has already signed up to star in upcoming comedy Last Vegas - dubbed "The Hangover with old people" - and rumors are swirling that De Niro and Walken will join him.

It will be the first time the pair has worked together onscreen since 1978 Vietnam movie The Deer Hunter, which landed Walken an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and De Niro an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
