Review: With 'Maps To The Stars' Cronenberg Is Back In Fine Form
After what seemed like a slew of disappointing flicks either going for Oscar grabs (see, or rather don’t see, the unwatchable "A Dangerous Method!") or filled with no meaning (don’t know which was more drab "Cosmopolis" or its star Robert Pattinson!) it’s nice to finally have the true David Cronenberg back in fine form. His old school morbid style matched with writer Bruce Wagner’s biting screenplay and featuring some arresting performances makes his latest outing "Maps To The Stars" a wonderfully wacky piece of wild abandon cinema – welcome back David.

The film is about two worlds in mod...

Diane Kruger
The Cannes Film Festival in the south of France kicked off on Wednesday. During the 12-day gala, a total of 22 movies will be screened for the coveted Palme d'Or prize. Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," Ken Loach's "The Angels' Share" and David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" are some of the films in contention.

Critics recently pointed out the lack of female filmmakers in competition for the prestigious prize. A group of French filmmakers wrote an open letter to the media accusing Cannes organizers of failing to give proper recognition to projects made by female directors.

Keira Knightley: 'The English Love A Good Spanking'

4/14/2012 12:20pm EDT
Keira Knightley Interview Magazine
Filmmaker David Cronenberg sat down with actress Keira Knightley, who he directed in A Dangerous Method, for the April issue of Interview magazine, and the two discussed several aspects of Keira's career, including the way the English press focused on talking about a scene in the film where Keira's character gets spanked.

"I know with A Dangerous Method people liked the spanking an awful lot," she says. "When we were in Venice [promoting the film], I didn't get asked about it once in however many days we were there."

"And then in Toronto I got asked about it a little bit more," she adds.

Viggo Mortensen showed his support for his favorite Canadian ice hockey team by waving its flag onstage as he picked up a top prize at the 32nd Annual Genie Awards in Toronto on Thursday.

Mortensen, a longtime hockey fan, drew cheers as he unfurled the Montreal Canadiens (sic) flag and wrapped it around the best supporting actor trophy he received for his role in A Dangerous Method.

He said, "It's a very beautiful trophy and I think in order to cross the border safely I'll have to wrap it very, very carefully so I brought some very strong material with me."

The actor also thanked Cana...

Review: 'A Dangerous Method' Feels Like Watered-Down Cronenberg

11/21/2011 2:20pm EST
A Dangerous Method
While there has always been a psycho/sexual theme in various guises throughout the work of famed filmmaker David Cronenberg, he has become a bit more refined with his movies of late. But where "Eastern Promises" was one of his most accomplished pictures to date, "A Dangerous Method" feels stagnate and ends up suffering from a severe case of identity crisis. Is the film a highbrow pseudo-intellectual drama, a tale of twisted sexual practices or just an examination of the deep dark secrets within us all? Problem is on all such levels the boring Method fails – trying to please everyone is d...

Review: 'A Dangerous Method' 'Two Jews On Film' Only One Is Psyched About Cronenberg's Latest

11/20/2011 4:56pm EST
A Dangerous Method
Two Jews on Film - By Joan Alperin-Schwartz: Sigmund Freud... Carl Jung... So what comes to mind when you hear these two names? Certainly not, the director David Cronenberg. who's more known for making twisted, dark horror/scifi ('The Brood', 'Scanners' 'The Fly) than cerebral relationship dramas.

But with his new film, 'A Dangerous Method' that's about to change. This is the story of three people, Sigmund Freud (Viggio Mortensen)...Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and their extraordinary, patient/associate, Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) who eventually came between them.

First, I ha...

9/14/2011 8:35am EDT
Keira Knightley
Keira Knightley came close to turning down a leading role in David Cronenberg's disturbing new film "A Dangerous Method" because she feared the movie's spanking scenes would haunt her for the rest of her career.

The British beauty plays a Russian woman with severe psychological issues who comes between famed psychiatrists Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud.

In one shocking scene, Knightley's character, Sabine, is violently spanked, and the star admits she picked up the phone to tell director Cronenberg she didn't feel comfortable accepting the role.

But after the filmmaker insisted the scene wo...

David Cronenberg Denies Sleeping With Wife In Front Of 'Violence' Cast

9/12/2011 8:53am EDT
David Cronenberg
Filmmaker David Cronenberg has dispelled the myth he and his wife had sex in front of the cast of "A History Of Violence" to help them perfect a rough love scene, insisting it was a story he and his leading man Viggo Mortensen made up.

Promoting the 2005 film, Mortensen told reporters and TV interviewers that the maverick director had got down and dirty with his wife right in front of him and Maria Bello to show them how he wanted them to sex it up in front of the cameras.

But the controversial auteur has revealed the story was a lie.

Cronenberg tells The Hollywood Reporter, "When you ar...

Actor Viggo Mortensen has appealed to the family of Sigmund Freud's psychiatrist protege Carl Jung to release more letters of correspondence between the pair, because they make "fascinating" reading.

Mortensen studied handwritten notes exchanged by the two doctors to help prepare for the role, but he wishes more personal letters from Jung were made av...

Is CGI Technology Enough Of A Reason To Remake 'Clash Of The Titans'?

3/31/2010 9:08am EDT
Clash of the Titans
As audiences get set for the update of "Clash of the Titans," many hardcore fans of the classic fantasy film are letting loose with that familiar cry of heresy. Sure, digital effects can look more "real" than the rubber and clay monsters created by legendary stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen for the 1981 original, but better? "Better" is a subjective term.

Ask "Star Wars" geeks which Yoda they prefer. When Luke Skywalker landed on Dagobah in 1981's "The Empire Strikes Back," the Yoda he encountered was a foam and latex puppet, voiced and manipulated by Frank Oz. The "real" Jedi Master ...

Ten Underrated Thrillers

10/17/2008 10:12am EDT
The Descent
Horror movies are some of the most consistent pieces of the film industry. Sure there have been highs and lows in the genre, and resurgences have come and gone, but one thing remains true: people will always yearn for those cinematic chills.

The demand, however big it may be, is always constant. The golden age of cinema through the 60s brought on big studio monster movies, sly noir thrillers, and of course, Hitchcockian suspense (a subgenre, respectively). The 1970s, arguably the paramount epoch of cinema, period, saw the expansion of the genre and gave filmgoers some of the best nail...

Mark Burg Plans To Remake 1981 Horror Classic 'Scanners'

7/27/2007 10:18am EDT
Yesterday at Comic-Con during Spike TV's panel discussion hosted by Henry Rollins, Saw franchise producer Mark Burg announced that he would be collaborating with Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Saw II, III, & IV, to remake David Cronenberg's 1981 horror classic, Scanners.

The title of Cronenberg's sci-fi horror film refers to a group of people who have telekinetic powers that allow them to read minds and give them the ability to make other people's heads explode. The children of a group of women who took an experimental tranquilizer during their pregnancies, the scanners are now adult...
