In Memoriam: The Five Best Wes Craven Films Of All Time

8/31/2015 10:50pm EDT
Wes Craven
The film world has lost one of its legends. Horror master Wes Craven died Sunday, August 30, 2015 after a battle with brain cancer.

To say his loss is massive is an understatement – nobody in horror history was more prolific, beloved and utterly creative than Craven. From Freddy Krueger to Ghostface, "The Hills Have Eyes" to "The Last House On The Left," Craven made great cinema.

And while a lot of his films went on to be remade to much lesser effectiveness, it was the cool of Craven that made a film he wrote and directed such an original experience.

So in loving memory of the man w...

MTV takes a crack at scripted television by attempting to reinvent the "Scream" franchise for the small screen.

Moving forward with an official pilot, network executives have ordered a one-hour episode based on the horror-comedy movie series. Executives are also in talks with the films' original director Wes Craven, hoping to persuade him to sit in the director's chair for the pilot.

The series is expected to air in the summer of 2014.

The film series, about a masked serial killer who stalks his victims, began in 1996 and spawned three sequels (most recent in 2011) and has grossed over $...

Wes Craven
Director Wes Craven is back on his feet, three weeks after undergoing knee replacement surgery.

The Scream filmmaker checked into hospital earlier this month in a bid to have joint problems in his right leg fixed and he spent the holidays hobbling around on crutches.

But Craven reveals he's making a fast recovery and can now walk almost unaided.

In a post on Tuesday, he writes, "Knee update: Today's my 3 week anniversary, and I'm off crutches and on just a cane or nothing! Things That Make Me Smile."

Q&A: Horror Master Wes Craven On 'Scream 4,' And His Own Worst Fears

10/3/2011 3:00pm EDT
Wes Craven
Wes Craven is one of Hollywood’s most prolific filmmakers, with a career that spans almost 40 years. He’s primarily known for his work in the horror genre, where he has helped to launch several of its most successful franchises, including "The Hills Have Eyes," "Nightmare on Elm Street," and most recently "Scream." The latest installment in the "Scream" series, "Scream 4," came out this past April, and arrives on DVD tomorrow.

I spoke with Mr. Craven about the upcoming DVD release of "Scream 4," about the genre in general, and about some his own worst fears. Below are the highlights of...

'Scream 4': Another Movie, Another Dollar

4/14/2011 2:02pm EDT
Scream 4
With the release of "Scream 4" on Friday, April 15, Wes Craven will finally have an answer to the question: Can the "Scream" movie franchise be resurrected as easily as the ghost faced killer? It’s been over a decade since the last installment of the "Scream" series was released and now the old gang, at least what’s left of it, is back at it again. Given most of the original cast has been killed off and the remaining ones have aged disgracefully into “Cougar Town” and Betty Ford during the significant time lapse since the last film’s release, Craven has decided to the inject some ne...

'Scream 4' Review: 'Two Jews On Film' Shout Yes For This Horror Franchise (Video)

4/14/2011 8:17am EDT
Scream 4
'Scream 4' is directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson...And they nailed it. They've brought back all your favorite characters (that weren't killed off in Scream 1,2 and 3) plus several new ones.

Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) now the author of a self-help book returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) who are now married. Gale however is not very happy. She's going through major writer's block. After writing six 'Stab' books, she's run out of ideas. Apparen...

Mondo Wes Craven - 'Scream' And 'Nightmare'

4/13/2011 10:07am EDT
Wes Craven Photo
For those not in the movie knowhow, there's a cinema that started in Texas known as the Alamo Drafthouse and it's famed for placing art draft tables in front of patrons and then serving a full menu. (Plus this is also usually the location of Ain't It Cool News head Harry Knowles twenty-four hour film fest Butt-Numb-A-Thon!) In any case the Alamo and the good folks over at Mondo (the collectable art boutique arm of the Drafthouse!) have put together some tasty new posters for fans in celebration of Wes Craven's films - the latest filmmaker in their 'Director's Series'. (Past masters include...

4/11/2011 9:55pm EDT
Emma Roberts
Julia Roberts' actress niece Emma Roberts auditioned for her role in Scream 4 via Skype.

The young star reveals she showed up at director Wes Craven's home after he invited her to audition for the latest Scream sequel, but she didn't actually get to meet him face to face.

She explains, "I get to his house and they told me it (audition) would be on Skype, which was so strange because his assistant was there, his casting director was there and he's there on a laptop.

"I just went for it and I actually found out later that day that I got the movie and I was off to shoot two weeks later. It ...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Scream 4,' 'Rio,' & More

4/11/2011 11:00am EDT
Scream 4
After seeing both “Arthur” and “Your Highness” last week, I could not believe how many other critics assigned them either the same score, or gave “Your Highness” a better grade. I found “Arthur” to be quite enjoyable, playing to Russell Brand’s strengths as my review states; while I thought “Your Highness,” was an immature comedy which fails to use raunchy humor effectively.

This week you’ll have the opportunity to see the long-awaited Wes Craven horror sequel “Scream 4,” the Carlos Saldanha animated adventure “Rio,” the off-beat Keanu Reeves comedy “Henry’s Crime,” and "The Conspirator"...

Emma Roberts' Cutoffs & Thigh-High Black Tights - Hot Or Not?

4/4/2011 1:00pm EDT
Emma Roberts
We spotted Emma Roberts outside a salon in West Hollywood this weekend wearing cutoff shorts, black tights and leopard-print heels. What do you think of her attire?

Horror movie director Wes Craven tormented Emma and co-star Hayden Panettiere on the set of Scream 4 with a series of spooky pranks. Craven was so determined to make Roberts and Panettiere's fear as realistic as possible, he told a crew member to don the eerie Ghostface mask and jump out on the actresses throughout filming.

Roberts said, "I definitely got scared, for real. Some scenes where I had to be running away from the...

Wes Craven Freaks Out 'Scream 4' Cast

3/18/2011 2:12pm EDT
Wes Craven
Horror movie maestro Wes Craven tormented Hayden Panettiere and Emma Roberts on the set of Scream 4 with a series of spooky pranks.

The veteran filmmaker has revived his classic slasher movie franchise and drafted in the two young stars to join Scream regulars David Arquette, Courteney Cox and Neve Campbell. Roberts admits she was genuinely frightened when acting out scenes involving the film's iconic killer, Ghostface, after Craven ordered Roger Jackson, who voiced the character, never to appear on set.

The director was so determined to make Roberts and Panettiere's fear as realistic a...

Kristen Bell Channels Flower Power At British 'Burlesque' Premiere

12/14/2010 3:00pm EST
Kristen Bell
While her co-stars Christina Aguilera and Cher wore sultry, low-cut, figure-hugging dresses, Kristen Bell opted for a more delicate look at the "Burlesque" U.K. gala premiere yesterday.

What do you think of her purple pumps and flower-power dress? We think it's adorable, but maybe not appropriate for the event.

Kristen stars in the upcoming film "Scream 4," Wes Craven's fourth entry of the Dimension Films slasher series. Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox Arquette return to their iconic roles dating back to the original breakthrough film in 1996, with Hayden Panettiere, Emma...

'Nightmare On Elm Street' Films Inspired By Real Story

10/14/2010 11:59pm EDT
Wes Craven
Moviemaker Wes Craven has revealed his "A Nightmare on Elm Street" films were inspired by real-life events.

The horror film icon admits he read a newspaper article about a boy who was so scared of his dreams he refused to sleep - and when he finally became too tired to stay awake, he died.

The director tells USA Today, "I had read this newspaper account about a kid who was so convinced someone was trying to kill him in his dreams, he refused to go to sleep.

"One night he finally did, woke up screaming and was dead before his parents got to him.

"That got me to thinking, 'This would make...

10/4/2010 9:09am EDT
Life as We Know It
If you have not been to the theater to see “The Social Network” you absolutely must check it out. David Fincher’s direction, Aaron Sorkin’s writing, and Trent Reznor’s score are all absolutely brilliant, making the film a serious Oscar competitor. Feel free to check out my review of “The Social Network” here if you haven’t already.

This week theaters will be quite busy, presenting an extensive roster of films which includes “Life as We Know It,” “Secretariat,” “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” “Tamara Drewe,” “Inside Job,” “Leaving,” “Nowhere Boy,” “My Soul to Take,” “Stone,” and “I Spit on ...

We All 'Scream 4' Set Photos

8/19/2010 7:00pm EDT
The guy behind the site Michigan Movies and More has been quite busy recently, stalking the cast and crew of the new 'Scream 4' movie being filmed in Ann Arbor right now. It's loaded with pictures and some short videos of the cast and crew hard at work. Be warned though, you will stumble across light spoilers if you dig around long enough, so use caution if you care about that sort of thing. I absolutely LOVED the first Scream and even though the sequels didn't hold a candle their predecessor, I still had a lot of fun with them. With so many years passed and the original cast and Craven...

7/20/2010 2:30pm EDT
Hayden Panettiere
Hayden Panettiere has dismissed rumors of problems on the set of the upcoming Scream sequel; insisting speculation about cast changes and arguments over the script is "untrue".

The fourth movie in the horror franchise has been filming in Detroit, Michigan and sees original stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox reprise their roles alongside new additions including Panettiere and Emma Roberts. Rumors of onset troubles have been rife ever since production began, with actress Lake Bell dropping out just days before filming was due to begin and online gossips alleging Panettier...

31 Days Of Horror - Wrap Up

11/2/2009 3:35pm EST
With Halloween come and gone, Starpulse writer Kris King has wrapped up his horror movie marathon. For the last three days Kris deals with the demon apocalypse

in "Demons," gets beaten up by a large French man in "Martyrs," and makes a lot of boob jokes with "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark."

October 29 - Demons (1985)

"Demons" starts off as a wickedly clever meta-movie. While Wes Craven's "Scream" discusses the rules of horror films and then applies them to its own story, the Dario Argento produced "Demons" goes a few steps further by setting the film in an old movie theater. "Demons" pu...

With Halloween comes the onslaught of scary movies that get their time to shine courtesy of the marathons thrown in their honor. These 5 scary movie characters in particular stand above the rest and are the last people you would want to wake up to see standi...
