Movie Review: Sequel 'Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters' Lacks Finesse

August 9th, 2013 10:24am EDT
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
The first Percy Jackson didn’t really light up the box office. 88 million domestically would make the sequel a little bit of a gamble. So why would they choose Freudenthal to direct? There is absolutely nothing about either Hotel for Dogs or Diary Of A Wimpy Kid that would make me believe that he could handle an ambitious sequel. He is not Chris Columbus, and the film feels it too.

Percy (Logan Lerman) is still struggling with issues of not being able to see his father, or speak to him. He’s off living at the Demi-God camp with everyone else. We learn the story of the camp, and how a young...

Spielberg Explains Why He Stepped Down From Directing 'Harry Potter'

January 10th, 2012 9:00am EST
Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg passed on the chance to get behind the camera for the first "Harry Potter" film after helping to develop the movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling's bestseller - because he didn't feel he was ready to tackle an "all-kids" project.

The moviemaker admits his own children thought he was crazy when he stepped down from the project and allowed Chris Columbus to take over - but he's still convinced he made the right choice.

He tells website Digital Spy, "I just felt that I wasn't ready to make an all-kids movie and my kids thought I was crazy. And the books were by that time popular...

'The Goonies 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition' On DVD & Blu-ray Nov. 2

November 2nd, 2010 6:52am EDT
Goonies
Leonard Maltin wasn't alone when he noticed similarities between "Goonies" and the 1934 Our Gang comedy "Mama's Little Pirate." Adapted by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg, the film follows a group of misfit kids (including such second-generation Hollywoodites as Josh Brolin and Sean Astin) as they search for buried treasure in a subterranean cavern.

Here they cross the path of lady criminal Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) and her outlaw brood. Fortunately, the kids manage to befriend Fratelli's hideously deformed (but soft-hearted) son (John Matuszak), who comes to their rescu...

Happy 30th Birthday, Macaulay Culkin!

Macaulay Culkin
Here's something that will make you feel old - "Home Alone's" mischievous Kevin Mccallister is 30!

That's right, the world's first $1 million child star, Macaulay Culkin, hits the big 3-0 today.

It seems like yesterday since the beloved blond boy wonder was creating mayhem in the first two "Home Alones," and fronting films like "Richie Rich" and "Getting Even with Dad" - but, no, sorry 80s kids; "Home Alone" hit the big screen 20 years ago!

He might have retired at 14, back in 1995, but Mack's still one of the most iconic movie figures of the last century - and we can't wait for him to m...

This Week's Movie Buzz: See It, Rent It, Or Skip It?

July 6th, 2009 9:36am EDT

Last week, I chose to see "Public Enemies," which is a decision I definitely do not regret. Johnny Depp is electric as John Dillinger, oozing the charm and finesse of the real life American bank robber and folk hero. Christian Bale also does a solid job as the FBI agent Melvin Purvis, a man singularly obsessed with catching Dillinger.

My main complaints are that the movie does not develop the roles of the other gangsters very well, and at points that the cinematography leaves something to be desired. There are some really shaky handheld shots, which are nauseating. Other than that, ...
