'Top Gear' Concludes Era With Clarkson, Hammond And May

7/14/2015 9:07am EDT
'Top Gear' Recap: How Did The Final Clarkson, May And Hammond Ep
American audiences finally got to screen the end of Top Gear as most know it on Monday, with "Series 22, Episode 8" cobbled together out of the final two films produced by now-former presenting trio Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond before all three and executive producer Andy Wilman departed from the program. Since they'd been doing this for more than a decade and turned Top Gear into a worldwide phenomenon, it truly was the conclusion of an era.

In the first film, the guys were tasked with buying classic cars to get "the classic car experience," which naturally was not as ro...

'Top Gear' Fans Outraged After BBC Fires Jeremy Clarkson

BBC Fires 'Top Gear' Host Jeremy Clarkson For Physically & Verba
The BBC has decided not to renew Jeremy Clarkson's contract with "Top Gear," despite support from celebrities and an online petition that drew over 1 million signatures from fans.

Clarkson, who has helmed the car show since 1988, was suspended from the series earlier this month after getting into a fight with producer Oisin Tymon over catering arrangements.

The network axed the final three episodes of the current season and has since decided to part ways with Clarkson. BBC Director-General Tony Hall said in a statement on Wednesday: "It is with great regret that I have told Jeremy Clark...

'Top Gear' (UK) Recap: 'Series 22, Episode 5' - Jeremy And Jame
This week on Top Gear, the new Porsche Cayman is on the track, Jeremy mocks the name of the Ferrari LaFerrari (rightfully so), and an old Peugeot goes past some goats.

After scaring himself badly last week, Richard Hammond is given the job of testing the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and comparing it to the Cayman. They both cost about the same, but the Cayman is much less powerful than the Stingray. It loses an "absolutely pointless" drag race, yet Richard still appreciates it, calling it "the perfect example of exactly what a European sportscar should be."

As for the Stingray, it's mu...

'Top Gear' (UK) Recap: 'Series 22, Episode 4' - Out Of Focus
This week on Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson's excited about BMW's and having "the cream of Hollywood" on the Dunsfold test track, but not "a pointless thing about old Land Rovers." And Richard Hammond scares the daylights out of himself.

But first, here's James May with a review of the Mercedes AMG GT, which is supposed to be a replacement for the SLS. He begins by saying he doesn't like everything that Jeremy does, but nonetheless, he still seems quite happy with the AMG. In the studio, though, he tells Jeremy that it has a couple of "massive problems," the first being "it reminds me of you."

'Top Gear' (UK) Recap: 'Series 22, Episode 3' - Medical Unprofes
On this week's Top Gear, Richard Hammond tests a van, Jeremy Clarkson drives an old brown Porsche, and James May uses a telephone. And somebody finally got these guys an ambulance. Wait, no...they made them build ambulances. That's much worse.

Jeremy justifies these shenanigans by pointing out that today's ambulances aren't getting to patients as fast as they should be, a problem which he blames on the ambulances themselves. This gave the presenters the idea to make non-traditional ambulances.

Here comes The Stig in the "emergency version" of Jeremy's Peel P45, which is the same thing exc...

'Top Gear' (UK) Recap: 'Series 22, Episode 1' - The Second Londo
Tonight on Top Gear, now that no one's being chased out of a country, it's time to get back to the usual motoring hijinks - which in series twenty-two, include an attempt at being cowboys that ought to go better than Richard Hammond's, The Stig's Australian cousin, and that long-awaited crossover with the American Top Gear.

First, though we're going in reverse and re-doing the infamous London race from series ten, since the guys botched it so badly by allowing James to drive the car. Except it's not in London, it's in St. Petersburg, Russia. And James isn't in the same car; he's in a Renau...

'Top Gear' (UK) Recap: 'Patagonia Special, Part 2' - Escape From
In part two of Top Gear's Patagonia Special (here's our recap of part one), Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are still trying to make their way to Tierra del Fuego in a trio of now significantly more mangled V8 sports cars.

But that's nothing compared to what's at the end of their journey: a very serious, potentially life-threatening situation that turns what should've been a typical Top Gear adventure into another startling moment that will go down on the unfortunate side of the show's history books.

With nine hundred miles left in their latest journey, their troubles are j...

'Top Gear' (UK) Recap: 'Patagonia Special, Part 1' - V8's Across
A new year brings a new season of Top Gear, which kicks off its twenty-second series with another one of its infamous road trips, this time sending Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to Patagonia. This latest adventure goes about as well as their sojourns to America, Africa, India, the Middle East, Vietnam...you get the idea.

The guys introduce the special after their office Christmas party (because in the UK this episode aired two days post the holiday), with The Stig face down in the food and the lights falling off. Jeremy explains that they met up with a trio of cheap V8's i...

'Top Gear' Crew Pelted By Rocks, Chased Out Of Argentina Over Li
The hosts of British TV show "Top Gear" were forced leave a film shoot in Argentina on Friday after an angry mob threatened them and pelted their cars with rocks. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May felt their "lives were at stake" during the incident.

The protestors were upset by the license plate on one of the cars, H982 FKL, which they believed was a reference to the Falklands conflict of 1982. Host Jeremy Clarkson claims producers had been alerted to the mistake before they reached the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and had them removed.

Clarkson told the Sunday Times newspap...

Sadly, it's that time again - the time when we must say goodbye to Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May for another series. Tonight, Jeremy points at some fields, Richard minces round a corner, and James describes his ideal night in, which sounds horrendous.

The guys open the show with Richard's review of the second-generation Range Rover Sport. First, he gets back behind the wheel of the first-generation version, which he says is only bought by footballers and people married to them. Having gotten that out of the way, he picks up the keys to its successor, which he immediately t...

'Top Gear' (UK) Recap: Jeremy And James's Caravan Holiday Disaster

Top Gear
You know what always makes Top Gear better? Caravans!

But first: 1963 saw the birth of two things Jeremy doesn't care about: the Porsche 911 and James May. Since he still doesn't care about either of those things, he sent James off to go drive a 911. Unsurprisingly, James has a vastly different opinion than Jeremy. "How can you not like a 911?" he asks aloud. For the purists in the viewing audience, he then introduces us to a company in California that does custom-built recreations of classic 911s, and takes one of those for a spin. This also seems to please Captain Slow. After the film, J...

Top Gear
There have been 20 series of Top Gear. That's like 10 times the number of seasons most TV shows get. And after all that time, Jeremy, James and Richard are still going strong.

Tonight, Jeremy claims "we've slowed down a little and grown up a lot," eliciting a collective groan from the studio audience. Of course, he's kidding. After the usual series-opening montage, he leads into a film where Richard is reviewing a series of hot hatchbacks: the Peugeot 308 GTI, the Renaultsport Clio 300, and the Ford Fiesta ST. After Richard takes the trio around the Top Gear test track, he turns them over ...

When last we left Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, they were venturing through Africa in cheap estate cars looking for the source of the Nile River. Here, then, is the second part of Top Gear's Africa Special. It's just as much off-kilter as the first part.

As dawn breaks, James is yelling at Jeremy for cutting out a portion of his Volvo's hood to replace the panel James removed from the door of Jeremy's BMW. Turnabout is fair play. Not content to stop there, Jeremy explains to camera that he's solved the BMW's issue with hill starts by attaching a log to the rear of his ve...

Welcome to the first part of the Top Gear Christmas Special. Or, since it's airing in March, the Africa Special. Tonight, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May pick up three cheap estate cars for another adventure in a foreign country they'll try not to upset. Jeremy has a BMW 528i that isn't as great as it seemed on the Internet, Richard is behind the wheel of a Subaru Impreza WRX, and James surprises no one when he arrives in a Volvo 850R. This trio of secondhand vehicles must endure only one challenge: the search for the source of the River Nile.

The show gets off to an awkward...

Tonight, on Top Gear: Jeremy Clarkson holds up a jar, James May points at a hill and Richard Hammond eats a sandwich. Cracking stuff, this. But watch out for the big, loud, bewildering (in other words, very Jeremy) twist at the end.

The show opens with "a big and important issue," at least according to Jeremy. He tells us that the roads are full of old people, but that cars aren't really friendly for the elderly, and Richard chimes in that they decided to go out, buy a car, and modify it for that purpose. We're off to the Top Gear Technology Center, where the twosome have a Fiat and sit in...

Tonight on Top Gear, James May draws on a board (that says "Kill Clarkson" on it), Richard Hammond waves at a man, and Jeremy Clarkson runs away from a table.

Jeremy opens the show with his uber-skeptical review of the new Vauxhall Astra VXR, which he actually likes, much to his surprise. He thinks Vauxhall spent more time on the front end of this car than they did on the whole of the Vectra, and thinks the ride is comfortable as long as you don't push the "sport" button. To compare, he then moves to some other options: the Ford Focus XT, which is cheaper, but not as nice to drive and has ...

They meet in Nevada, where they compare supercars. Jeremy brings the Lexus LFA, with James driving the Aston Martin Vanquish (which Jeremy promptly drools over), and Richard the SRT Viper. There's the usual banter over whose is better before Jeremy suggests they shut up and go for a drive. Unfortunately, they end up on a road where the speed limit is 35 MPH....

The Hamster Who Ruled The World: A Conversation With 'Top Gear's' Richard Hammond

Richard Hammond
When I get word that Richard Hammond wants to speak with me, I'm stunned. I'm to be on the phone with one of Britain's most loved TV personalities, one of my idols...and I've just seen film of him crushing a Porsche with a tank.

Calling Hammond just a TV presenter would be like calling Cal Ripken Jr. just a ballplayer. He has hosted enough television programs that he should probably have his own channel. He's best known for a decade of co-hosting Top Gear, but has also been seen on shows like Brainiac, Total Wipeout, and multiple series that bear his name, including Richard Hammond's Fiv...

Behind The Wheel Of History's 'Top Gear'

"American Top Gear."

It's a phrase that's struck dread in the hearts of many for years. Fans of the hit BBC series - those of us sitting at home with our Jeremy Clarkson books and 'I Am The Stig' T-shirts, and yes, I am one - have heard rumblings about a US import and almost immediately worried one would go south (see: the American adaptation of Coupling, etc.) Yet after a false start (a busted NBC pilot hosted by Adam Carolla), History Channel made the concept a reality two years ago.

And guess what? It's not a nightmare. In fact, it's pretty good.

The cynics - and yes, I was one - are ...

Tonight on Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson talks to a man in sunglasses, James May draws a square on a wall, and Richard Hammond plays with a soldier's chopper.

Firstly, our blustery leader wants to talk about the Jensen Interceptor, which he tells us was "built very badly by people who didn't seem to care what they were doing." It's back now with an updated version, and he seems much happier with the new one, minus some period features that he doesn't care for. The steering system, he says, might be from a lawnmower and requires a lot of "flailing at the wheel." That doesn't sound enco...
