Birth Name: Sam Claflin
Born: 06/27/1986
Birth Place: Ipswich, Suffolk, GB

Samuel George Claflin was born on June 27, 1986 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. His father earned a living as an accountant and financial manager, while his mother worked as a classroom assistant. Although he originally planned to pursue a career in professional sports, an ankle injury sidelined Claflin's dream of playing for the English football club Norwich City. The future star graduated with honors in 2009 from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, a prestigious drama school that boasted alumni such as John Lithgow and Stephen Moyer. While attending the Academy, Claflin often acted in theatrical productions, playing everything from the shepherd Silvius in William Shakespeare's "As You Like It" to the womanizer Dorimant in George Etherege's 1676 play "Man of Mode." Claflin reportedly considered joining a touring production of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" (1600s) but then had a change of heart after landing his first major onscreen role. The actor made his television debut in "The Pillars of the Earth," a Starz miniseries based on Ken Follett's 1989 historical fiction novel of the same name. Claflin played Richard of Kingsbridge, a skilled knight who, as a young man, witnessed his sister's rape by a sadistic lord. The 12th Century-based miniseries also starred Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell and Donald Sutherland, and nabbed a Golden Globe nomination for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Following his breakout television role in "The Pillars of the Earth," Claflin co-starred opposite Sean Bean in the post-apocalyptic adventure "The Lost Future" (SyFy, 2010), and appeared as a young novelist - portrayed in his later years by Jim Broadbent - in the PBS Masterpiece series "Any Human Heart" (2011). It did not take long for the talented actor to land a featured role in one of the most anticipated films of 2011, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." The fourth installment of Disney's blockbuster franchise, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" found Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) back on the high seas in search for the fountain of youth. Along the way, Captain Jack encounters Claflin's character, a young missionary named Philip Swift who falls in love with a mermaid (Astrid Berges-Frisbey). Claflin held his own while acting opposite Depp, emerging as the film's breakout star. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" opened at No. 1 in the box office and made $35 million on opening day. Appearing in such a high-profile project ignited Claflin's film career, which included starring roles in the fantasy adventure "Snow White and the Huntsman" (2012) opposite Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart, and "The Seventh Son" (2013) with Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore.
