Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'Iron Man 2', 'Babies' & More

May 3rd, 2010 9:00am EDT
mother and child
On Thursday, I watched the reboot to the Freddy Krueger series “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” The film kept my attention however it did not blaze a new trail in the genre or introduce any compelling fresh elements to Krueger’s origin story.

It seemed the real purpose of this remake was to introduce us to the new actor playing Krueger, Jackie Earle Haley. Krueger was exclusively portrayed before by Robert Englund, which made the actor synonymous with the character. Haley is consistently creepy and perverted as Krueger like Englund. Unlike Englund though, his makeup allows him to appear mo...

'Iron Man 2' Premiere Pics: Gwyneth Paltrow's Short Shorts & Robert Downey Jr.'s Red Sunglasses

April 27th, 2010 6:20pm EDT
Robert Downey Jr & Gwyneth Paltrow
The stars came out in Hollywood last night for the "Iron Man 2" premiere at the El Capitan Theater. Robert Downey Jr. walked the red carpet wearing funky red and blue sneakers and red sunglasses. Gwyneth Paltrow strutted her stuff wearing a low-cut blazer with matching short shorts.

In the film, Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark, the wealthy playboy whose exploits as Iron Man are now public knowledge after his admission at the close of the first film. In the follow-up, Stark is pitted against his Russian arch nemesis, Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), and corporate rival Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwel...

Scarlett Johansson Steams Up The Red Carpet At The 'Iron Man 2' Premiere

April 27th, 2010 12:27pm EDT
Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson turned heads at yesterday's "Iron Man 2" premiere in Los Angeles in a pretty white Giorgio Armani Privé dress with sparkling silver heels. Jennifer Lopez donned a Privé gown at the Academy Awards, but we think Scarlett pulled hers off better. And it's a far cry from what she had on the day before at the film's photocall.

Scarlett recently admitted she's boring and hates going out on the town. The actress is rarely seen stepping out with husband Ryan Reynolds, and she prefers quiet nights at home to wild parties with her peers. She told In Style magazine, "I've just never...

Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow must have coordinated their outfits before stepping out for the "Iron Man 2" photocall in Los Angeles on Friday. They both opted for gray dresses, but which actress has the better figure?

In the follow-up film, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is pitted against his Russian arch nemesis, Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), and corporate rival Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). Also making their Marvel debuts are Johansson as the sexy Russian spy Black Widow, and Don Cheadle, who takes over the role of Colonel James Rhodes from Terrence Howard. Gwyneth Paltrow returns ...

Robert Downey Jr. Jokes Through 'Iron Man 2' Press Conference

April 24th, 2010 10:16am EDT
Robert Downey Jr.
Superhero alter ego Tony Stark likes to mess with the press. In Iron Man, he made them all sit on the floor, then he made a spontaneous confession to being Iron Man. Perhaps taking a cue from his on screen alter ego, Robert Downey Jr. riffed with the real press corps at a press conference for Iron Man 2.

Asked if he’d ever dressed up as a superhero in his childhood, Downey took a shot at his own reputation. “Growing up, no, but in my mid-30s in Palm Springs, right before an arrest, yes,” Downey said. “It was a premonition.”

Asked to share his definition of a hero, Downey ribbed his co-sta...

Tony Stark Crashes His Own Party In First 'Iron Man 2' Clip

Tony Stark certainly knows how to make an entrance. After unveiling that he was the man behind the Iron Man mask in the first movie, Tony is keen to show off his invention at the Stark Expo - so he crashes the stage as Iron Man.

As the clip shows, Iron Man has become something of a cultural phenomenon. There are dancers in Iron Man costumes and people in the crowd hold up Iron Man merchandise. And of course, AC/DC is blasting through the speakers.

Iron Man 2 is due in theaters May 7 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Rock...

The Golden Age Of Black Talent In Hollywood

March 2nd, 2010 10:05am EST
Are Black Men The Dominant Leading Actors Of This Era
Hollywood has always had its share of big-name black talent, from Sidney Poitier to Hattie McDaniel to Louis Gossett, Jr. But looking back, none of those big names owned Hollywood like Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, or Audrey Hepburn did. Poitier, McDaniel, and Gossett, Jr. were immensely talented pioneers, but they were vastly outnumbered by their peers in the industry. Unfortunate as it was, they were the exception in Hollywood, not the rule.

This was probably due in part to the social fabric of America at the time. It can’t have been easy for Sidney Poitier, even with his incredible tal...

Kevin Smith’s “Cop Out” turned out to be a delightful action comedy in the vein of typical buddy cop movies from the 80s and early 90s. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I laughed throughout the film. This was primarily due to hilarious performances from Tracy Morgan and Sean William Scott. To read more about what I thought of “Cop Out” check out my Starpulse review here.

So, have you seen this year's comedy about an overweight, overzealous, loser-y mall cop who takes his job way too seriously and is hopelessly in love with a fellow shopping center employee? If you're not sure whether I'm referring to January's hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop or the newest Seth Rogen comedy Observe and Report (in theaters now), don't be too hard on yourself: Both flicks have eerily similar plotlines. This isn't the first time two films with the same subject matter have been released within a year of one another; Hollywood has a talent for redundancy (see: recycling and ripping off)...

Bringing comic book heroes (and villains) to the big screen has meant big bucks for movie studios in recent years. With huge budgets and state of the art special effects, it's easier than ever for filmmakers to convincingly create the fantasy worlds that classic comic characters inhabit, both delighting die-hard "geeks," and captivating folks who've never picked up a comic book in their lives.

Comic book films have always been popular, dating back to the movie serials of the 1940s featuring Superman, Batman, and Flash Gordon, just to name a few. Christopher Reeve's "Superman" in 1978...

Music Biopics: What's Been Done, What's In The Works, & What We Want

Walk the Line
The biopic is a longstanding Hollywood tradition. There are the big budget epics like the now infamous Elizabeth Taylor vehicle "Cleopatra," David Lean's masterpiece, "Lawrence of Arabia," or Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi." Then there are the smaller pictures chronicling the equally gripping stories of those less celebrated. Daniel Day Lewis' portrayal of the Irish cerebral palsy painter, Christy Brown in "My Left Foot," or Bill Condon's 2004 film "Kinsey" about human sexuality researcher Alfred Kinsey come to mind.

In recent years, thanks in part to the wide success of the films "Ray...

When given the right script Sander has proven time after time that he has true acting ability (see numbers 1, 3 and 5), and the intrigue ...
