The Golden Age Of Black Talent In Hollywood

March 2nd, 2010 10:05am EST
Are Black Men The Dominant Leading Actors Of This Era
Hollywood has always had its share of big-name black talent, from Sidney Poitier to Hattie McDaniel to Louis Gossett, Jr. But looking back, none of those big names owned Hollywood like Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, or Audrey Hepburn did. Poitier, McDaniel, and Gossett, Jr. were immensely talented pioneers, but they were vastly outnumbered by their peers in the industry. Unfortunate as it was, they were the exception in Hollywood, not the rule.

This was probably due in part to the social fabric of America at the time. It can’t have been easy for Sidney Poitier, even with his incredible tal...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Alice In Wonderland,' 'Brooklyn's Finest' & More

March 1st, 2010 10:02am EST
Alice In Wonderland
Kevin Smith’s “Cop Out” turned out to be a delightful action comedy in the vein of typical buddy cop movies from the 80s and early 90s. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I laughed throughout the film. This was primarily due to hilarious performances from Tracy Morgan and Sean William Scott. To read more about what I thought of “Cop Out” check out my Starpulse review here.

The first week of March delivers to theaters Tim Burton’s long awaited whimsical tale “Alice in Wonderland,” the gritty cop drama “Brooklyn’s Finest,” and the NYC release of the animated feature “The Secret of ...

Saving Private Ryan
So, have you seen this year's comedy about an overweight, overzealous, loser-y mall cop who takes his job way too seriously and is hopelessly in love with a fellow shopping center employee? If you're not sure whether I'm referring to January's hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop or the newest Seth Rogen comedy Observe and Report (in theaters now), don't be too hard on yourself: Both flicks have eerily similar plotlines. This isn't the first time two films with the same subject matter have been released within a year of one another; Hollywood has a talent for redundancy (see: recycling and ripping off)...

Bringing comic book heroes (and villains) to the big screen has meant big bucks for movie studios in recent years. With huge budgets and state of the art special effects, it's easier than ever for filmmakers to convincingly create the fantasy worlds that classic comic characters inhabit, both delighting die-hard "geeks," and captivating folks who've never picked up a comic book in their lives.

Comic book films have always been popular, dating back to the movie serials of the 1940s featuring Superman, Batman, and Flash Gordon, just to name a few. Christopher Reeve's "Superman" in 1978...

Music Biopics: What's Been Done, What's In The Works, & What We Want

Walk the Line
The biopic is a longstanding Hollywood tradition. There are the big budget epics like the now infamous Elizabeth Taylor vehicle "Cleopatra," David Lean's masterpiece, "Lawrence of Arabia," or Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi." Then there are the smaller pictures chronicling the equally gripping stories of those less celebrated. Daniel Day Lewis' portrayal of the Irish cerebral palsy painter, Christy Brown in "My Left Foot," or Bill Condon's 2004 film "Kinsey" about human sexuality researcher Alfred Kinsey come to mind.

In recent years, thanks in part to the wide success of the films "Ray...

Of all the major stars today, not many cause such a divisive "love him or hate him" argument like Adam Sandler. Though if one can make it through the outstretched arms of his rabid fan base, and before you reach the angry mobs of critics and "haters" there is a very fascinating middle ground of people who are "intrigued" to say the least with Sandler's acting ability (in full disclosure the author of this piece falls into that "intrigued middle ground"). When given the right script Sander has proven time after time that he has true acting ability (see numbers 1, 3 and 5), and the intrigue ...

The logic behind the spin-off is very sound. Take a beloved character or concept from a pre-existing series and create an entire new show. You have an established character or brand and thus a built-in fan base. It makes perfect sense, no?

Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is not quite that simple. Certainly there have been spin-offs that attracted both fans and critics and managed to create a legacy all their own. Shows like "Frasier," "Angel," and "The Jeffersons" instantly come to mind. But for every successful spin-off, there have been dozens of miserable failures...
