'Community' Recap:'Advanced Criminal Law'

October 16th, 2009 9:39am EDT
Community
This week's Community begins like previous episodes, on Monday morning as Dean Pelton addresses students over the PA, this time to remind them of Friday's unveiling of a statue of Glendale Community College's most famous alumni, actor Luis Guzman.

John Oliver's Dr. Ian Duncan catches Jeff in the hallway and asks him if he and Britta are dating. Jeff says she's off limits and Dr. Duncan gets an opportunity to rep for Fawlty Towers, often cited by Brits on the Internet to be the best sitcom ever. This level of awareness could go a long way for Community, especially when writers use it for ...

'Community' Recap: 'Social Psychology'

October 9th, 2009 9:45am EDT
Community
NBC wasn't lying when they advertised Community as a hit before audiences had even seen it. Three episodes in, it already has the buzz to secure a second season. In each episode, writers have found clever ways of allowing the talented ensemble cast to pair off and interact, revealing more about each character. The thirteen episodes of this season will likely color in these characters as the major and minor romantic plotlines flesh out.

This week, Jeff finds himself in the "girlfriend" zone trying to be cool as Britta tells him about her new boyfriend, Vaughn, a hackey-sacking hippie with...

Chevy Chase Could Return To 'Fletch' Role

October 7th, 2009 3:52pm EDT
Chevy Chase Could Return To
Comedy legend Chevy Chase has hinted he's set to return to the big screen in one of his most famous movie roles - playing Fletch in a forthcoming sequel.

Chase played the womanizing journalist in two movies in the 1980s, based on the books of author Gregory McDonald.

Studio bosses have been trying to take McDonald's novel Fletch Won to the big screen for more than a decade with a number of directors including Kevin Smith linked to the film, and several actors including John Cusack, Zach Braff, Jason Lee and Ryan Reynolds considered to fill the role made famous by Chase.

But the ...

Top 10 Films With Numbers In The Title

September 26th, 2009 1:52pm EDT
9
In honor of the recent Tim Burton film 9 we're spotlighting numerals and numbers in film. What they have contributed to movies over the years goes beyond simply differentiating an original from a sequel.

For the most part this list excludes sequels. Sorry. It's just too easy. Also, much too simple are the straight up number films. But the English language loopholes are definitely abused throughout this top ten to reflect the best and, well, most viewed options. Check them out!

This is the smartass chick's chick flick with a message. Bette Midler. Goldie ...

'Community' Recap: An A- For The Tardy & Sperm Jokes

September 25th, 2009 8:00am EDT
Community
The second episode of Community was funnier than the first, meaning I laughed a lot more and it actually tickled me at one point.

This week the ragtag study group anxiously awaits Jeff (Joel McHale), for whom they all have varying degrees of crushes. He shows up late, making the big entrance one would while trying to impress the only one in a crowd who doesn't already love you.

Jeff's indifference toward the band of misfits sets up Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase)'s first big laugh with a highly repeatable pun on the word "tardy." My man Abed makes a meta joke about his character's ten...

First Episode Of 'Community' Uneventful

September 18th, 2009 10:08am EDT
Community
NBC's supposed smash hit Community got off to an inauspicious start as it premiered Thursday night immediately after The Office. Although NBC is relying heavily on a network television virgin, America is ready for Talk Soup's Joel McHale's career to take off.

A super star on the E! Network, McHale is a very talented comedian but has never played the leading role at any level as a professional. He plays Jeff, a snarky former lawyer who has to enroll back at the local community college because the state bar discovers his undergrad degree is erroneous.

Jeff is a good role for the shar...

Sneak Peek: Joel McHale's 'Community' (Exclusive Video)

Earlier this summer, Facebook teamed up with the NBC marketing department to bring it back to what it once was: a grassroots college networking site. Through exclusive invitations sent around via Facebook messages, dozens of lucky fans of the new NBC and Joel McHale comedy "Community" got to attend a special screening of the show, followed by a cast Q&A at their local community college.

Last night - after granting Facebook users an instantaneous (and free!) look at the "Community" pilot simply for "Becoming a Fan" of the show on the site - NBC held a screening at "Community's" own Los An...

An Open Letter To Paul Abdul: Leaving 'Idol' Is A Bad Idea

July 22nd, 2009 9:31am EDT
Paula Abdul
Dear Paula Abdul,

I am writing on behalf of the Shelley Longs, Geri Halliwells, Wayne Rogers and Sherry Stringfields of the world when I give you three simple words of advice regarding your decision to leave American Idol: Don't do it.

I'm not really sure why you'd need me to tell you this, but based on the rumors flying across the Internet and the statements of your own manager, you're really thinking about leaving the most successful television series of the decade over some sort of personal insult. Or is it money? Nobody can really be sure what's going through your pill-filled head...

Taking You Back To 'Year One': A Spotlight On Harold Ramis

June 19th, 2009 10:10am EDT
Harold Ramis
You probably know him best as the deadpan Dr. Egon Spengler, a collector of spores, molds, and fungus, but relatively few know Harold Ramis for what he does best: writing and directing.

With his latest directorial effort, the stone-age comedy "Year One" coming out today, I felt it was appropriate to pay tribute a man who has been working behind the scenes on some of the best comedies of the past 30 years.

Harold Ramis was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1944 to Ruth and Nathan Ramis, two shop owners on Chicago's West Side. Staunchly loyal to the Chicago area, Ramis has lived there for...

Last week's TV upfronts brought some re-vamps and a whole lot of raised eyebrows, but never fear, Starpulse.com is here to sort through the soon-to-be-canceled masses and select a few must-see gems.

Melrose Place Reboot

The CW may have angered some Jason Dohring fans by not picking up his political drama for Fall 2009 - instead opting to choose just another revamp to add to the line-up. The new "Melrose Place" may follow the same formula as the new version of Beverly Hills 90210: campy primetime soap relationship drama set in the shiny, pretty people part of Los Angeles. It will fe...

Is It OK To Dislike Caddyshack?

Caddyshack
Caddyshack isn't that good, and it's not very funny. If you're 9 out of 10 red blooded American men, that last sentence just infuriated you like I just made slanderous remarks about your grandmother. I've never met your grandmother, but I have seen Caddyshack - and it kind of sucks. My editors were quick to advise me that although they were giving me the go-ahead on this piece, they would have to include a bigger than usual disclaimer saying that the opinions expressed are solely that of Matthew J. Swanson. I'll tell you that right now, too: it is just my opinion, but it happens to be t...

'Saturday Night Live': Post-Election

December 2nd, 2008 10:04am EST
Saturday Night Live
Saturday Night Live is not funny. Some of the skits are funny, some, but the show as a whole is not. The former meter of comedic excellence has not so much stepped away from the glory days of John Belushi and Chevy Chase as much as it has dove. Even Cheri Oteri, whose career is on the wane since her days cheerleading alongside Will Ferrell, chose to cameo on the soon-to-be-cancelled Boston Legal as opposed to her alma mater.

Yes, the election has returned SNL to brief heights of hilarity. But, what does it mean when the most memorable skits of the new season featured two former cast m...

Underrated/Overrated 'Saturday Night Live' Weekend Update Anchors

October 20th, 2008 12:48pm EDT
Kevin Nealon
Last week and for the next few, "Saturday Night Live" will move its oldest property, "Weekend Update" to primetime.

It seems we can no longer call the cast the Not-Ready-For-Primetime Players as they bring their cornerstone segment to a timeslot previously occupied by shows like "Frasier" and "Friends". This gives SNL a chance to enter the mainstream in a way it never has before, and with the endless wave of news (both straightforward and comedic) "Weekend Update" is the perfect vehicle to bring late night to primetime.

Unfortunately, those who don't like to stay up late are forc...

Chevy Chase Not Impressed By Sarah Palin's 'SNL' Appearance

Palin appeared in an opening skit with staunch Democrat Baldwin, and again in the Weekend Update segment, when she nodded along to a rap song by SNL's A...

The Most Overrated & Underrated Talk Show Hosts

In recent years, the late night talk show has given way to an avalanche of reruns and trash TV dotting the midnight landscape, making the late night chatfest in itself underrated.

Of course, there are still plenty of these shows to be found around the dial, especially on ABC, NBC and CBS (FOX apparently is still too shell-shocked from "The Chevy Chase Show" to attempt reentry into the fray). There are other spots where these shows can be found thanks to the advent of cable and satellite television leaving enough of a selection for viewers of divergent tastes to find the host they like...

Movie Sequels: A List Of The Best & Worst

It seems every year we are inundated with dozens of sequels to films we love and those we've already forgotten about. But what are the best? What are the worst? What shouldn't have been made and what beat the original? Answers to those questions are below, but before a list of the best and worst sequels is determined a few ground rules must be established.

1. The Sequel Cannot Be Planned. There are plenty of movies where the sequel is somewhat planned (I highly doubt anybody wasn't thinking sequel during Spider-Man) but some movies are part of a planned series from day one. The mo...
