28 Celebrities Who Use Stage Names
Many celebrities have changed their names before they hit it big, and for many reasons. Let's take a look at some of the biggest stars who didn't take their birth name to Hollywood.

Katy Hudson didn't want to be confused with Kate Hudson, so she took her mother's maiden name and became Katy Perry.

Oprah Winfrey's name is iconic, but it's not actually her real name. It's Orpha, after the biblical figure. However, so many people mispronounced her name while she was growing up that the mispronunciation stuck.

Barry Manilow was born Barry Alan Pincus. He took his mother's maiden name...

April 13th, 2012 8:35am EDT

"Community" star Joel McHale hopes the public war of words between his co-star Chevy Chase and show creator Dan Harmon will lead to a spike in ratings for the show because the series has yet to get picked up for a fourth season.

Chase famously lashed out against Harmon during a expletive-laden voicemail earlier this month, calling the scriptwriter an a**hole and an alcoholic. The message went viral after Harmon aired the clip at a Los Angeles comedy club.

The pair has continued to hurl insults at one another, with the writer confessing he should not have gone public with the audio.

Q&A: John Landis Talks 'Three Amigos!' Turning 25, And Gives Insight On Other Classics

November 22nd, 2011 2:30pm EST
Three Amigos
In the 1986 comedy “Three Amigos!” Steve Martin quips, “You dirt-eating piece of slime! You scum-sucking pig! You son of a motherless goat!” Every time you hear the insult, it’s almost impossible not to laugh with Martin’s matter-of-fact delivery. What makes the statement even more comical though, is that Martin’s character has no idea he’s pissing off, a bad guy, who’s ready to shoot him for the outrage.

“Three Amigos!” tells the story of three unemployed actors (Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short) who mistakenly travel to a Mexican village for a celebrity appearance. This is n...

'Community' Recap: Competitive Ecology

October 10th, 2011 7:55am EDT
community 3
The most recent episode of NBC’s “Community” is, in some ways, one of its most meta and self-referential outings. Greendale Community College’s motley study group always seems to be spending more time arguing and screwing off then actually studying (a serious complaint from the show’s critics). In “Competitive Ecology,” the writers, in their unique way, address those who take issue with that aspect of the show.

The team’s Biology professor, Dr. Kane, tells the class that they’ll be partnering up to build a terrarium which will be due the next day. Instead of letting the students choose the...

One of the most entertaining aspects of NBC’s “Community,” now entering Season Three, is its ability to never take itself too seriously. From “Pulp Fiction”-inspired episodes to claymation hallucinations to Sergio Leone-style paintball competitions, “Community” is one of the most inventive shows currently on television.

The episode kicks off with an over-the-top musical number featuring the entire cast (save Chevy Chase’s Pierce Hawthorne who left the group at the end of last season) which describes the characters’ goals for this year (meaning season). As it turns out, the sequence is just...

Check Out The 30th Anniversary Of 'Caddyshack,' On DVD & On Demand Jun 8

The smash success "Caddyshack" became a prototype for countless other wacky T&A-tinged teen comedies of the early 1980s.

At an exclusive country club for WASPish snobs, an ambitious young caddy (Michael O'Keefe) from an overpopulated home eagerly pursues a caddy scholarship in hopes of attending college and, in turn, avoiding a job at the lumber yard. In order to succeed, he must first win the favor of the elitist Judge Smails (Ted Knight), then the caddy golf tournament which the good judge sponsors.

Of course, there are love interests as well - one good, one naughty - not to mention s...

'Community' Recap: 'The Art of Discourse'

Put on your homage-spotting caps, it's another new episode of Community.

After last-week's dead-ringer mafia movie/Scorcese parody, the writers took on the godfather of college hijinx flicks- Animal House.

It all begins with Abed, the catalyst for all the meta self-awareness in the Greendale universe, trying to complete his freshman year bucket list by recreating gags culled from classic college comedies.

Troy agrees to be his Morgan Freeman character and is promptly pantsed by Abed, who is disappointed Troy isn't wearing the traditional white heart-print boxers. Troy returns the favor (...

Just when I thought Community could not get any wilder and awkward, family week at Glendale happened.

Abed brought his family, which was the punch line for many racist jokes by Pierce. Senor Chan brought his brother, who told Senor Chan how ridiculous his name sounds. Troy brought his grandmother, who was “old school”, and ended up whooping Britta with a “switch” (stick).

Jeff has no family, while Pierce brought his super hot ex-stepdaughter, which lead to a classic Pierce line, “Over the course of seven marriages, I've amassed some 32 stepchildren."

Things got a little weird as Pierce w...

Community Paley fest
My audio recording from last night's PaleyFest panel honoring the acting and producing talent of NBC's hit sitcom, Community, is pretty much nonsensical. Between the raucous laughter from the audience, creator Dan Harmon's long, rambling stories, and star Chevy Chase's Christopher Walken-like way of answering questions, everyone had a ton of fun but it became incredibly clear that the show is even more remarkable simply for managing to get scenes shot, despite the crazy off-screen behavior!

NBC's 'Community' Handles Jack Black And Other Guest Stars Well

During all the NBC internet chatter this week, I couldn't wait for new episodes of scripted comedy. The Thursday lineup was loaded with guest stars, none bigger than Jack Black's appearance on Community, which says one if not two things: the show is underperforming ratings-wise, and A-list actors want to be a part of a comedy they enjoy watching.

The question is not how the Kung Fu Panda would interact with the tight ensemble cast, but how the show's producers would buck the tired traditional sitcom celebrity guest tropes.

Viewers tune into Community because it takes familiar sitcom...
