January: The Worst Month For Cinema

January 8th, 2010 10:35am EST
The Worst Month for Cinema
January truly is the worst month for film. In fact, January is the equivalent of the second string JV team in high school. Its sole purpose is to warm the benches for the upcoming seasons.

The month sometimes holds a few kernels of popcorn goodness. The two genres that perform well, or at least have been granted a few sleeper hits in the past decade, are thrillers and sci-fi/horror. Last year 'Taken' and 'My Bloody Valentine 3D' were stars among flops in January. Typically, as rabid consumers of cinema, we forget about January. Honestly, do any of you fondly remember titles like, '...

Sylvester Stallone's Broken Neck, And A List Of Hollywood's Most Painful Injuries

January 7th, 2010 11:01am EST
Sylvester Stallone
The other day Sylvester Stallone revealed that he had a metal plate placed inside his neck after a freak accident while filming a fight scene for his new movie The Expendables. Many stars want to do their own stunts, either out of pride or a desire to make the movie as real as possible. However, few have escaped unscathed.

Stallone has always insisted on doing his own stunts, and said he had his worst injury while filming Rocky IV. He insisted that co-star Dolph Lundgren actually punch him during takes, and Dolph delivered a stunning punch to Stallone's chest. His ribs compressed agains...

Q&A: Brett Ratner On 'Beverly Hills Cop IV,' 'The Shooter Series,' And What He Thinks Of Comic Book Fans

September 9th, 2009 12:01pm EDT
Brett Ratner
Is Brett Ratner misunderstood? The "Rush Hour" and "X-Men: The Last Stand" director thinks that's quite possible.

His new retrospective DVD series, "The Shooter Series," (to be released September 15) paints the some may call party-boy director in a different light. Contemporaries such as Quentin Tarantino share their experiences about working with Ratner; and the director's early student films, commercials, and music videos are also chronicled.

Ratner also doesn't parse words about his feelings toward the vocal online community who criticized his work on "X-Men: The Last Stand," and h...

Owen Wilson
The Frat Pack has been a powerful force in the new Millennium, and for awhile it was like we could not see a comedy without Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, and Owen Wilson. These comedic geniuses are quirky, timely, and have a lasting power that will keep them in movies for years to come. The goofy, charming Owen Wilson has proven himself not only as an actor, but as an Oscar-nominated screenwriter. There's a lot more going on beneath those blonde surfer bangs than one might expect, and with "Marley & Me" coming out this Christmas, let's take a look at some of the fine...

Movies With Heart: The 100 Best 'Romdramedies' Of The Past 20 Years

April 17th, 2008 8:00am EDT
Clueless
There's the quintessential romantic comedy, and then there's the romdramedy. Similar to a dramedy (in which there is an equal balance of humor and serious content), a romdramedy combines comedy and drama with that mushy thing we call romance.

This is not a list of the best films over the past 20 years. Rather it is a list that gives preferences to those films that best combine all three elements - romance, comedy and drama.

Films like Magnolia and The Matrix were barred from competition, while films like Down with Love were considered (however, that one didn't make the cut)....

I'm an avid fan of "Survivor." I have been since the first episode of the first season. What's not to love? I have assembled my list of celebrities, historical figures and fictional characters that I would love to have on my island. The latest season had 16 people, so that's the number I'm going with.

Jackie Chan's new action comedy sequel Rush Hour 3 is facing release difficulties in his native country because it's been branded "fundamentally anti-Chinese".
