5/11/2015 4:15pm EDT
Johnny Carson

Carson died at her home in Los Angeles, where she was in hospice care, according to Ed Rada, the executor of her estate.

Joanne was Johnny Carson's second wife. They married in 1963, one year after he took over "The Tonight Show." Carson was born Joanne Copeland in Los Angeles.

The couple divorced in 1972. A story involving Joanne Carson by former Johnny Carson associate Henry Bushkin was published in Bushkin's tell-all book in 2013. Bushkin wrote that Johnny...

20 Incredible David Letterman Moments That Kept Us Watching
The landscape of late night TV has changed dramatically over the last year. Jay Leno retired, for good this time, and was replaced by Jimmy Fallon. Seth Meyers was brought in from SNL to take Fallon's old slot. And then just when everyone thought things were settling down... the best late night talk show host since Johnny Carson dropped a bomb.

David Letterman's announcement that he will retire in 2015, followed by the quick naming of Stephen Colbert as his replacement by CBS sent shockwaves through the industry. Jay Leno may have been ahead in the ratings when he left but ask most comedy ...

Johnny Carson's Second Wife Denies Cheating Allegations In New Biography

10/9/2013 11:52am EDT
Johnny Carson
Late late night TV host Johnny Carson's wife has denied allegations that she cheated on him with former NFL star Frank Gifford.

Henry Bushkin, who represented Carson for 18 years, claims in his new biography, "Johnny Carson", that he and the host once broke into Carson's second wife Joanne Copeland's apartment when the host suspected her of having an affair behind his back.

"I have reason to believe my wife is cheating on me. I also have an idea who the son of a b**ch is that she's shacking up with," Bushkin claims Carson told him.

Carson was also allegedly packing heat: "I was shocked t...

Top Ten TV Goodbyes: Who Makes The List?

5/20/2011 5:00pm EDT
The Office Goodbye Michael
With Steve Carell leaving ‘The Office’ last month, it’s time to reflect on big goodbye episodes. I thought ‘The Office’ pulled off his departure well, although I’m not sure how I feel about the future of the show.

Here’s my top ten list of other shows that have successfully sent a character off in style. The rules: it is a true “goodbye” episode with a major character or star departing. If it happens off-screen, it doesn’t count. So that’s why I’m not including some obvious departures, such as Rhoda Morgenstern, Frank Burns, Coach Pantusso, etc.

Here they are. Do you agree?

Stars That Started Out Behind The Scenes

4/7/2010 2:08pm EDT
Tina Fey
By now most people know that "Date Night" star Tina Fey was the head writer on "Saturday Night Live" before Lorne Michaels had the bright idea to give her the on-screen job of co-anchoring the show's classic "Weekend Update" segment with Jimmy Fallon. Soon she was appearing in movies, winning all of the industry's top acting awards for her role on "30 Rock," and achieving icon status with a brilliant impersonation of a certain moose-hunting republican from Alaska.

It's hard to believe that one of the most recognizable faces in comedy spent several years behind the scenes, and Fey's not th...

1/12/2010 3:45pm EST
Conan O
Conan O'Brien has released a statement detailing his thoughts on NBC's proposed time slot changes to "The Tonight Show" and a Jay Leno show before it. In it, he says "I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction," referring to a time change to 12:05. Read the full text below.

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly ...

Jay Leno
Johnny Carson left "The Tonight Show" with an intimate hour reflecting on his decades as the host. Jay Leno has offered cryptic hints about the send-off he plans to give himself when he wraps The Tonight Show at the end of May.

"I have something really unusual and different planned something really out of left field that we're going to end on," Leno said. "It's something really personal and really unusual. Well, it seems unusual but it's just really different and it has to do with our show and our staff and I think it'll make people smile. It'll be interesting. I don't want to give it ...

From Jimmy Kimmel to Jimmy Fallon, there will be competition amongst late night talk show hosts to attain viewers, create stronger monologues, and land A-list celebrities. Jimmy Fallon Begins 'Late Night'

3/2/2009 10:27am EST
Jimmy Fallon
Jimmy Fallon begins his duties as new host of NBC's Late Night at 12:35 AM this week. You may already have a taste for his style if you've seen any of his internet experiments. If you're participating, you may even hear your jokes in his monologue.

"I Twitter and I'm currently on Facebook," Fallon said. "I'm experimenting now how it could be interactive with our show. For instance, I went to CES [The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas] but across the street was the Adult Entertainment Expo. So I Twittered, 'Give me any double entendre jokes right now.' And I got 150 in three second...

The Most Underrated & Overrated Influential TV Shows

8/22/2008 9:28am EDT
Miami Vice
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and on television it often appears to be the only form of creativity. Yes, ever since Milton Berle first stole a joke for "Texaco Star Theatre", TV has been a wild west of borrowing material and copying good ideas until they've become completely stale. Many of these ideas were so good, in fact, that their resonance is still felt today, and that's when a show crosses over from being copied to being influential.

Over the years, many shows have been considered influential. From "The Dick Van Dyke Show" first showing both the home and office l...

The Most Underrated & Overrated Films By Martin Scorsese

5/9/2008 9:25am EDT
Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese. The name, like no other director of the modern era, is completely synonymous with quality. A trailer branded with "A film by Martin Scrosese" instantly becomes a must-see for cinephiles, no matter what clips preceded the title card.

Images of dramatic shootouts scored by classic rock and sharp-tounged dialogue of the underworld enter people's minds when they think of Scorsese. The man has changed much about the way films are made. His use of popular music inspired a generation long before MTV, and the way he made violence pop off the screen was a direct antecedent o...

The Most Overrated & Underrated Talk Show Hosts

4/18/2008 9:22am EDT
Jon Stewart
In recent years, the late night talk show has given way to an avalanche of reruns and trash TV dotting the midnight landscape, making the late night chatfest in itself underrated.

Of course, there are still plenty of these shows to be found around the dial, especially on ABC, NBC and CBS (FOX apparently is still too shell-shocked from "The Chevy Chase Show" to attempt reentry into the fray). There are other spots where these shows can be found thanks to the advent of cable and satellite television leaving enough of a selection for viewers of divergent tastes to find the host they like...

TV's Longest Running Shows Continue To Thrive

1/24/2008 10:16am EST
The Simpsons
With the writers' strike still in effect, TV viewers are in limbo. No one knows for sure which "bubble" shows will make it through another season. The fate of series such as "Moonlight," "Medium" and "Supernatural" is unknown. The pilot season, which usually gears up in January, is not gearing up.

While viewers wait to see when and if their favorite TV shows will return, we take a look at some of the small screen programs that have not only survived but thrived over the years. The writers' strike is just a blip on the radar for these heavy hitters.

This is a list based on fact...
