Edward Burns Filmed Christmas Movie On Childhood Street

December 26th, 2012 2:07pm EST
Edward Burns
Moviemaker and actor Edward Burns made sure his new film The Fitzgerald Family Christmas had a neighborly feel to it - by shooting on the street he called home as a kid.

The Brothers McMullen star set the story in his childhood home in New York and thought it would be nice to head back there for the project.

He tells WENN, "When I wrote the screenplay I imagined that the Fitzgeralds were living in the house that I grew up in on Valley Stream, Long Island. So when it was time to do the location scouting, I needed to find a place that felt like the house I grew up in.

"I called my mum a...

Two Jews' Review 'Man On A Ledge' And Both Say 'Jump Off' (Video)

January 26th, 2012 2:00pm EST
Man On A Ledge
Two Jews on Film - By Joan Alperin Schwartz: A former NYPD officer, Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) escapes from Sing-Sing. His next stop is the famed Roosevelt Hotel on 45th and Madison in the heart of New York City. Nick checks in, making sure his room is on one of the highest floors.

Nick orders a lobster and a bottle of champagne. He eats, drinks a glass of the bubbly, wipes off his fingerprints, writes a short note, takes a few deep breaths and then steps outside onto a ledge, a ledge that is 225 feet above The Big Apple.

It doesn't take long before the whole city notices would ...

Twitter Fans Helped Ed Burns With His Latest Film

January 7th, 2012 10:30am EST
Ed Burns
Actor/director Ed Burns wrote the script for his latest Indie film "Newlyweds" based solely on the input of his Twitter fans.

The star cut production costs on the project by filming the movie with a point-and-shoot camera and recruited largely unknown actors, who were willing to do their own hair and make-up.

And Burns, who ultimately shot "Newlyweds" for a meager $9,000, admits he also reached out to his social networking followers for plot ideas, music compilations and artistic guidance.

He says, "I started using Twitter a couple years ago 'cause, as an Indie filmmaker, you sort of wan...

Edward Burns Is Making 2012 Christmas Movie

December 26th, 2011 1:00pm EST
Edward Burns
Actor/director Edward Burns is already planning next Christmas - he's making a holiday film for the end of the year.

The Saving Private Ryan star is working on a new movie called Fitzgerald's Family Christmas, which he insists will be like his cult directorial debut The Brothers McMullen, but set during the holidays.

Burns tells WENN, "It's about a big Irish Catholic family out on Long Island. Mike McGlone from The Brothers McMullen is in it. It's seven adult siblings from Long Island and their parents got divorced when they were kids and the father now wants to return to the family's hom...

The Strange And Surprising Career Of Cameron Diaz

June 23rd, 2011 1:00pm EDT
Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz is anything but a predictable actor. This Friday, “Bad Teacher” opens and will showcase Diaz’s R-rated comedy skills opposite Justin Timerlake and Jason Segel, an alumnus of the Judd Apatow school of raunchy humor. Directed by Jake Kasdan (“Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”), Diaz stars as the world’s worst teacher who would rather get high in her car than teach her kids anything. While most moviegoers see her as just a pretty face who pops up in mediocre films, Diaz has had an incredibly unique and varied career in Hollywood over the last two decades.

Her breakthrough role ca...

Interview/Review: Filmmaker Edward Burns Inspires With 'Nice Guy Johnny'

Nice Guy photo
For someone who has worked with the likes of Steven Spielberg and Robert De Niro, actor/filmmaker Edward Burns is a guy who’s never forgotten his roots. Continuing to match his big budget acting gigs with small passionate independent filmmaking fare, Burns has been busy ever since his debut smash "The Brothers McMullen" back in 1995. His latest foray into the low budget movie world is a romantic comedy called "Nice Guy Johnny" (on Special Edition DVD June 7 from FilmBuff – check out the review below!) and tells a tale of a young man about to get married who meets a gal that gives him seco...

The Television Balcony: The 'Echelon Conspiracy'

Echelon Conspiracy
Sometimes, I look at a movie and wonder, "How can there be so many great actors in it, and yet it's not a bigger deal?" The Echelon Conspiracy is an example of why that happens. Yes, it's got Shane West, Ed Burns, Ving Rhames and Martin Sheen in it, but this is a film I didn't entirely get until Shane explained a crucial part of it to me.

We've seen conspiracy thrillers before. We've seen movies about technology going awry before. We've even seen Martin Sheen being kind of a bastard before (hello, Spawn). The Echelon Conspiracy is what happens if you add those three things together, then...

Taylor Swift Talks About The Guys & The Lies In The New People

October 21st, 2010 9:01pm EDT
Taylor Swift
As Taylor Swift releases another deeply personal album, the 20-year-old country star opens up in this week's issue of PEOPLE about life in the spotlight, dating drama, and using her songs to get the last word. All of Swift's albums have famously been autobiographical, and her latest, Speak Now, is filled with emotionally charged songs she wrote about the past two years of her life - a period that included failed relationships with Joe Jonas and Taylor Lautner (and, apparently, some drama with John Mayer), a smattering of critical backlash after her Grammy wins and that infamous incident at...

Similar Story Smackdown: Which Hollywood Flicks Came Out On Top?

Saving Private Ryan
So, have you seen this year's comedy about an overweight, overzealous, loser-y mall cop who takes his job way too seriously and is hopelessly in love with a fellow shopping center employee? If you're not sure whether I'm referring to January's hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop or the newest Seth Rogen comedy Observe and Report (in theaters now), don't be too hard on yourself: Both flicks have eerily similar plotlines. This isn't the first time two films with the same subject matter have been released within a year of one another; Hollywood has a talent for redundancy (see: recycling and ripping off)...

Famous June Brides: Happily Ever After?

June 3rd, 2008 8:30am EDT
Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban
Historically, some married in the month of June to honor Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. Others did it to time conception so births wouldn't interfere with harvest work. Brides in the 15th century chose to marry in June because it coincided with their "annual bath" - you read right - thus ensuring a relatively sweet-smelling honeymoon.

Centuries later, June has remained the most popular month to wed. In MGM's 1954 Academy Award-winning musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers the song "June Bride" trills: "Oh, they say when you marry in June, you're a bride all your life."
