| I have just watched 'The Bravados' on British TV this afternoon as I always enjoy a Stephen Boyd film. I was shocked to discover that he died aged only 45. I will always remember him in my favourite performance of his in 'Ben Hur'. What a terrible waste. | ||

Stephen Boyd was one of the last of the stars groomed by 20th Century Fox under the old and quite fantastic Studio Contract System. Stephen Boyd was a great looking, very masculine Irish born actor who conveyed strength and also deep kindness in a series of films at 20th Century Fox and was directed by fine Directors at 20th such as Henry King and Henry Hathaway, Jean Negulesco all stalwarts of Hollywood. Some of Stephen Boyd's great leading ladies during his too brief career were Susan Hayward, Sophia Loren, Doris Day, Rita Hayworth, Gina Lollobrigida, Yvette Mimieux , Brigitte Bardont, and Raquel Welch. Mr. Boyd also worked with some of Hollywood's great professionals such as Joan Crawford, Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Eleanor Parker, Yul Brynner Alec Guiness, Omar Sharif, and Brian Ahearne. Boyd and Jennifer Jones are said to have been a romantic pair after Selznick's death. I liked Mr. Boyd best in two films: Jerry Wald's great soap opera "The Best of Everything" with Hope Lange, Diane Baker and Suzy Parker at their loveliest ( Joan Crawford superb in a cameo) and also the Oscar winning William Wyler film "Ben Hur" with its still tremendously exciting Chariot Race of Stephen Boyd vs. Charlton Heston. Mr. Boyd was simply amazing in that film and I think stole the Movie from Charlton Heston ( who won the Oscar as Best Actor) Stephen Boyd was the perfect Leading Man who could do Westerns, Comedy, Musicals, and rousing action films etc. and fine Actor | ||
