Mel Blanc & Pinto ColvigBugs Bunny and His Friends Release Date: 1961 Label: Capitol Records Rating: ![]() |
Some people might think this album should be credited to Bugs Bunny, and the reality in which he would exist as a real entity is not to be scoffed at. Nonetheless, when a visual representation of this loveable creature and great philosopher is removed, along with that of all his buddies, what we are left with is the voices and in that world Mel Blanc is the star. This album is part of a series of projects created by Capitol, but manufactured (and how, in great quantities) by Ziv International, which distributed children's recordings worldwide. Officially sanctioned by Warner Bros. and the Looney Tunes mob, these albums are loaded to the gills (or should we say stacked to the whiskers) with high quality sound effects, music and best of all Mr. Blanc's esteemed vocal hijinks. Bugs, Porky Pig, and Daffy Duck have an adventure each on the first side, but then the project is hijacked by Bozo. Pinto Colvig, who did voices and sound effects for Walt Disney as well as on a Nat King Cole record, is in charge here, and comes up with more voices than one might hear in an elevator on its way up to a conference of people suffering with multiple personality disorder. However, coldly facing facts, the reality is that Bozo is a dull character, not in the same league as Bugs Bunny. They should not have been combined on the same record. Those suspicious of an anti-Bozo slant should consider the actions of the record company, who plaster images of the Looney Tunes gang all over the cover. Any pictures of Bozo? No-zo! So Capitol and Ziv must not have had have much confidence in the clown, either. Parents may notice that when this album finally emerges as a giveaway from a "grown-up" child's bedroom, the Bugs side will be worn and nearly unplayable, the Bozo side in near virgin condition.
