Black was born Thomas Black on Aug. 28, 1969, and was anointed with the nickname Jack almost immediately. His parents were both satellite engineers (rocket scientists) who split when he was 10 years old, after which Black moved from wealthy Hermosa Beach, CA, to the Los Angeles neighborhood of Culver City.
