Paul Bettany: 'Transcendence technology is just decades away'

April 9th, 2014 9:30pm EDT
Paul Bettany
Paul Bettany is convinced the eerie technology featured in his new movie Transcendence will be commonplace within his lifetime.

In the film, Johnny Depp plays a terminally ill scientist whose mind is uploaded to a computer, granting him power beyond his wildest dreams - and his 42-year-old co-star believes the story isn't as far fetched as some people think it is.

Bettany tells WENN, "I spoke to a professor at Cal Tech (the California Institute of Technology). He's a brilliant man. When I walked into the room he was looking at a slice of the human brain whilst listening to Wagner.

"I ask...

Jennifer Connelly found working with husband 'strange'

March 6th, 2014 11:20pm EST
Jennifer Connelly
Jennifer Connelly found it "strange" going to work with her husband every morning for 'Shelter'.
The actress was directed by Paul Bettany in the new movie - in which she stars as a homeless person - and even though they've been married for more than a decade, it was weird for them to be on the same set together.
She told DuJour magazine: "It was kind of strange, going to work in the morning with the director.
"But it really seemed to come quite naturally to him - phew - and it was an amazing experience to have had together."
The 43-year-old star added she didn't even get preferential treatm...

Paul Bettany Cast As The Vision In Avengers: Age of Ultron

February 7th, 2014 4:03pm EST
Paul Bettany
Paul Bettany will be voicing artificial intelligence yet again for the Marvel universe.

Bettany, who voiced Iron Man's JARVIS system, has been cast as The Vision for the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The addition makes sense, considering Ultron's involvement. The evil machine built Vision to help him defeat the Avengers, but Vision broke his programming and ended up helping the super team beat Ultron.

Currently, the big rumor about The Avengers' story is if he had Bettany's voice.

The Vision first appeared in 1968 and has been a part of The Avengers team for decades. Although he wa...

Jennifer Connelly wouldn't 'torture' herself for role

January 21st, 2014 3:20pm EST
Jennifer Connelly
Jennifer Connelly would never "torture" herself to be considered beautiful.
The 'Requiem for a Dream' star refuses to chase Hollywood ideals of what is considered good looking, as she thinks they would make her go crazy.
She told Allure magazine: "The thing that really matters to me is well-being and happiness. Maybe it comes from knowing people who have tortured themselves trying to meet these strangely narrow and rigorous definition of what our culture thinks is beautiful."
The 43-year-old actress, who is married to fellow movie star Paul Bettany, also talked about her on-screen chemistr...

Jennifer Connelly feels safe with spouse

January 21st, 2014 6:20am EST
Jennifer Connelly
Jennifer Connelly felt "safe" being directed by her husband.
The 43-year-old actress stars in 'Shelter', which her actor spouse Paul Bettany has also written, and says knowing he was in charge made her less worried about "making a fool" of herself.
She said: "One couldn't feel more safe as an actor than knowing that the director's your husband. It's like, Oh, if I really make a fool of myself, I can just say, 'Honey, can you please not put that in the movie?' "
The actress has starred in three movies with Russell Crowe - 'A Beautiful Mind', 'Winter's Tale' and 'Noah' and he thinks they wor...

Jennifer Connelly
Actress Jennifer Connelly took up hiking as a hobby in a bid to keep the paparazzi from photographing her.

The A Beautiful Mind star is an enthusiastic walker and her husband Paul Bettany reveals she uses the activity to escape the limelight.

He says, "I am a city boy but my wife loves the outdoors and consequently I do a lot of hiking, and I mean proper hiking up in the mountains. Her reason for that is you never get paparazzi up in the mountains."

Bettany jokes, "If you do, you can kill them and bury them and no-one will ever know."

Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'Bridesmaids,' 'Priest' & More

May 9th, 2011 11:00am EDT
I apologize to all my faithful readers that there was no Trailer Talk column last week. Between my coverage of IFF Boston and a trip to Chicago, unfortunately it was just not in the cards. I did see some great flicks though at IFF Boston and met some interesting filmmakers. If you haven’t already checked out the coverage, definitely read my reviews and watch my interviews.

Of the movies that came out last week, I had already seen Jodie Foster’s third directorial effort “The Beaver,” starring Mel Gibson. In his role as the mentally ill Walter Black, Gibson puts forth a very raw perform...

'Gossip Girl' Star Penn Badgley Talks About His Latest Travels

February 14th, 2011 2:06pm EST
Penn Badgley
Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley recently caught up with Conde Nast Traveler and shared some thoughts on his recent travels with the magazine.

"The landscape in Iceland was intimidating and brutal: geysers, waterfalls, billion-year-old moss-covered lava, " he says of his trip to the island nation.

"And Reykjavík's nightlife is just as wild. At Prikid bar, they played great American hip-hop, served shot after shot of a licorice liquor called Topaz, and treated me as if I were the entire cast of Ocean's Eleven," he adds.

The gossip guy also talks about his trip to Southeast Asia; however, his ol...

2010 Year In Entertainment Review: December

January 2nd, 2011 7:00pm EST
Miley Cyrus
December saw a series of scandals as the stars brought a touch of sex and drugs to the festive season - and wildchild Miley Cyrus led the way. The former Disney star ended 2010 by reminding us all she's a grown up now after she was caught on camera smoking legal hallucinogenic Salvia from a bong, and hit headlines again days later when she was pictured in a girl-on-girl clinch and exposing her bra while surrounded by hunky men.

Her pal Demi Lovato joined the Hannah Montana star in scandal when provocative photos which appeared to show her partly-exposing her breasts leaked on the internet,...

January 18th, 2010 12:36pm EST
In a rare feat, I was able to catch two movies last week that came out in theaters: "The Lovely Bones" and "The Book of Eli." I didn't really care for "The Lovely Bones" however

I very much enjoyed "The Book of Eli." To get a more detailed look at my thoughts check out my reviews here on Starpulse.

This week features a bizarre mix of movies including the religious thriller "Legion," the silly family film "Tooth Fairy," the emotional drama "Extraordinary Measures," and the coming-of- age story "To Save a Life."

January 15th, 2010 8:53am EST
Kirsten Dunst
Jennifer Connelly, Kirsten Dunst and Michael Stipe have lost their campaign against the construction of a sanitation department in their New York neighborhood after a judge rejected a lawsuit opposing the project.

Manhattan officials have announced plans to erect a $346 million garage complex to store the city's garbage trucks in the trendy SoHo area of the Big Apple.

Famous residents Connolly and husband Paul Bettany, Dunst, Stipe, Lou Reed and John Slattery all took a stand against the proposal, urging city planners to build a smaller facility in another location.

But the power o...

January: The Worst Month For Cinema

January 8th, 2010 10:35am EST
The Worst Month for Cinema
January truly is the worst month for film. In fact, January is the equivalent of the second string JV team in high school. Its sole purpose is to warm the benches for the upcoming seasons.

The month sometimes holds a few kernels of popcorn goodness. The two genres that perform well, or at least have been granted a few sleeper hits in the past decade, are thrillers and sci-fi/horror. Last year 'Taken' and 'My Bloody Valentine 3D' were stars among flops in January. Typically, as rabid consumers of cinema, we forget about January. Honestly, do any of you fondly remember titles like, '...

2009 is starting to wrap up with a few big blockbusters left for the Christmas season, but now it is time to look forward into 2010 to see what's coming up. January (in order of release date)

"Daybreakers," rated R, is being released January 8th and stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill. This movie is taking advantage of the current vampire popularity, but thi...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Avatar,' 'Nine' & More

December 14th, 2009 9:25am EST
Last week I had a chance to catch "Invictus," director Clint Eastwood's latest effort. A lot of early buzz suggests the film should be a Best Picture contender at the Academy Awards, but I personally wasn't too impressed.

While "Invictus" isn't a terrible movie, it certainly isn't Eastwood's best. In many ways it just feels forced because the film tries too hard to send an inspirational message.

Eastwood explores a number of subplots that he never fully fleshes out, and he fails to establish the proper dramatic tension that makes a sports picture so powerful. As an audience member ...

Jennifer Connelly Allows Her Children To Curse At Home

September 10th, 2009 8:54am EDT
Jennifer Connelly
"I'm very against rudeness, I believe in manners, I believe in discipline, but other things that people are very uptight about, I'm not... I'm not uptight about cursing. I won't let my kids say, 'You're a f--king a--hole' - because that's rude...(I say) 'Don't go to school and say, Teacher, pass me a f--king pencil.'" Jennifer Connelly has no problems with her kids swearing at home.

Jennifer has a 6-year-old child, Stellan, with husband Paul Bettany and a 12-year-old son, Kai, from a previous relationship with photographer David Dugan. Jennifer explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live that words...

Jennifer Connelly Is Unimpressed By Paul Bettany's Good Looks

July 27th, 2009 2:28pm EDT
Jennifer Connelly
Paul Bettany bulked up for the action film Legion. He plays the archangel Michael defending humanity against God himself, who decided to unleash an army to destroy his disappointing human creations. When he brought his new muscles home, wife Jennifer Connelly was not impressed.

"She hates it," Bettany said while he was previewing Legion at San Diego Comic Con. "She hates it when I get fit, because she says, 'You look like everybody I refused to go out with in college.' So she's never impressed by that sort of thing. She's impressed by me saying that I read Remembrance of Things past.'"

Cam Gigandet Sharpens His Teeth With Another Vampire Role

June 8th, 2009 3:00pm EDT
Cam Gigandet
Twilight star Cam Gigandet seems to have found his niche - he will play a bloodsucking sheriff in his next movie outing.

The actor got his big break playing evil vampire James in the hit teen film earlier this year and has been inundated with job offers ever since.

However, there is only one part the star really wants to get his teeth into next - another vampire role. Gigandet will play a night-roaming sheriff in the new movie Priest, which tells the story of a battle between humans and vampires.

He will co-star alongside Brit actor Paul Bettany, who will play a priest des...

Jennifer Connelly's Son Broke Her Veganism

November 12th, 2008 6:15pm EST
Jennifer Connelly
Jennifer Connelly blames her 11-year-old son Kai for turning her back onto meat - because the strict vegan crumbled when she was pregnant with him.

The actress had successfully avoided animal products for many years until she conceived - with ex-partner David Dugan - and the cravings began.

Connelly, who is now married to British actor Paul Bettany, tells Marie Claire magazine, "I'd been vegan for many years, and then all of a sudden, when I was pregnant with Kai, I wanted a turkey burger. That was the end of my being vegan."

The Three Best & Worst Films Starring Tom Hanks

April 18th, 2008 2:29pm EDT
Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks is a rare movie star in that he is a top leading man without topping anyone's most beautiful list. Rather he established, and maintained, his stardom by fusing a "boy next door" image with undeniable talent.

He is equally at home with romantic comedies and dramatic war epics; however, he seems reticent to play the meanie. More than most, he can fit into a role without exhibiting a "Tom Hanks" persona. He has even delivered a number of memorable performances on "Saturday Night Live," a venue that allows true talent to reveal itself. (And on the flip side, it emphasizes those ...
